Every year, for the past four thousand years or so, Jewish families throughout the world celebrate the Passover, ‘The Festival of Freedom’.
A traditional feast called the ‘Seder‘ is held where the story of the Exodus is read and traditional foods are served which remind all present of the suffering that was endured while slaves in ancient Egypt.
Today we see something completely different, an ‘Exodus in reverse’. We see hundreds of thousands of enslaved Gazans trying to break into Egypt in order to survive. Because of Israeli sanctions they have no food, medicine and other essential items needed for everyday living. The ancient Hebrews had no chance to do what they did a few weeks ago. It took them almost 300 years to come up with a leader that would confront the Pharaoh and gain freedom for them.
The Palestinians have been waiting 60 years for that freedom…. for that leader. When they chose one his words fall on deaf ears, reminiscent of Moses’ dealings with the Egyptian monarchy. The Hebrews used plagues to convince the powers to ‘let my people go’….. the Palestinians use Qassams…. do they have a choice?
The plagues stopped when the gates were opened…. the Qassams will stop as well. History is repeating itself, and not in a good way. We are supposed to learn from history, from it’s mistakes. We are not supposed to repeat them.
Let my people go! Now!!
Let us also celebrate a Passover, a Festival of Freedom.
The wall must come down…. The siege of Gaza must end…. The genocide must end….. The ethnic cleansing must end…. The Qassams must end!
There must be PEACE…. There must be a FREE PALESTINE
There must be a SECOND PASSOVER!
