Once again, a rabbi in a high position issued a statement that can only be construed as racist and dangerous to any attempt of finding a peaceful path to the problems plaguing the Israeli and Palestinian peoples. In effect, he is calling for outright war against the Palestinians.
Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, the chief rabbi of Safed, is calling on the government to carry out “state-sanctioned revenge” against Arabs in order to, in his words, restore Israel’s deterrence.
In a piece penned for this upcoming weekend’s edition of the newsletter “Eretz Yisrael Shelanu,” Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu wrote: “It’s time to call the child by its name: Revenge, revenge, revenge. We mustn’t forget. We have to take horrible revenge for the terrorist attack at Mercaz Harav yeshiva. I’m not talking about individual people in particular, I?m talking about the state. [The state] has to pain them to the point where they scream ‘Enough,’ to the point where they fall flat on their face and scream ‘help.’ Not for the sake of satisfying the need for revenge but for the purposes of deterrence.”
The rabbi added that he “already sees all the bleeding hearts clicking their tongues, moving uncomfortably in their chairs, contorting their faces at this display of ‘depravity’ and beginning to spout their slogans. ‘Barbaric.’ ‘Amoral.’ ‘Inciter’ and the rest of the usual words that are frequently blurted out from their mouths. Don’t pay them any mind. With their way of doing things, there won’t be a state here in another 30 years. They’ve already taken the trouble to arrange foreign passports for their children. We’ll stay here. We need to live with those who understand very well the language of revenge.”

Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu has a history of racist anti-Arab and pro-violence statements, along with calls to oppose disengagement actively. As the rabbi of Safed, he should avoid political statements. The son of the former Sephardi chief rabbi, he is also suspected of criminal incitement. Three years ago, Attorney General Menachem Mazuz said he would be issuing an indictment against Eliyahu following a hearing, but a final decision still has not been made.

Just another sad reminder of one of the world’s greatest paradoxes. Man’s apparent need to create and maintain ‘religion’ with all its spiritual and ‘brotherly-love’ aspects somehow keeps feeding man’s apparent need for extremism. Whichever Book one holds high, once extremism creeps in the result is the same.

You’re insane Holmes! You do NOT know God and the spew that vomits from out your mouth is the proof positive! How sad for Israel that Israelis would listen or follow the venom you spread. Revenge is what you preach and revenge is what you’ll reap. Simple as prophetically that. Your soul would have to be one reprehensible and horrid looking monster. Scarred and scabrously calloused. You are blind to the words of healing that lay directly in front of your “learned” eyes. How sad for you and how dangerously sad for Israel.
Hatred breeds contempt and contempt breeds mindless violence. Jeez Rabid Eliyahu, I was under the impression that ‘rabbi’ was a position of spiritual attainment and enlightenment. Well I guess that Rabid Eliyahu has put that silly notion to rest.

These incidents are like “hate speech,” but the greater phenomenon is more like the Catholics and the Catholic clergy that for so long turned a blind eye to the centuries-long incidence of pedophilia and bloodied rape of young boys by Catholic priests.
There can be no doubt everyone knows this is violence inciting “hate speech,” no less so than every Catholic knew young boys were being raped by their clergy for as long as anyone has been Catholic.
There is long but not lost history behind both these heinous phenomena.
It is one thing to be a rapist or a violence inciting bigot in a religious frock, but it is quite another to keep quiet about a systemic characteristic of your clergy, peers and neighbors.
Silence is wholly, even doubly complicit to these crimes.
And, sooner or later, as all Catholics have found out repeatedly, such crushing blows will come to personally affect all those who do not cry, “Foul!”
There is a civic responsibility to reel in such immoral behavior before it becomes the justification for even more immoral behavior.
So, when you hear it, stand up and challenge it right then and there.
