It’s obvious that despite all the calls for an immediate cease-fire and widespread condemnation of the Israeli attacks upon and recent invasion of Gaza that nothing is going to stop the Israeli war machine from pursuing its military aims until it is satisfied it has done all it can to pulverize Hamas, destroying as much of Gaza and killing as many Palestinians, including women and children, as it deems necessary and unavoidable. There is no stopping the Israeli military juggernaut.
Meanwhile, everyone is writing articles decrying the situation, analyzing the political motives of the Israeli leaders and speculating about where all of this will lead. And of course there have been spontaneous worldwide demonstrations, scattered and uncoordinated as they necessarily have been, some of them quite large, to protest vehemently against the actions of the Israelis.
All of this is good, but none of it is enough.
While the world’s attention is focused on the war in Gaza and the horrendous plight and suffering in Gaza, we have a unique opportunity now to harness all the energy and concern about Gaza in America to do something that would really make a difference.
Organize a huge march on Washington for the spring.
Aim for at least 100,000 Americans. Ordinary Americans of all backgrounds who will collectively raise their voices to draw attention to the fact that although Israel would not heed international pressure to stop their aggression against Gaza, it will now have to pay the price for its actions and experience painful and meaningful consequences.
The objectives of the march would be several: (1) To create a national movement to withdraw support for Israel by showing that it is no longer in our national interest to maintain our “special relationship” with it; (2) To pressure the U.S. government to withhold or suspend economic aid to Israel until it ends the blockade against Gaza and begins to dismantle the occupation against the Palestinian people as a whole; (3) To promote the widespread use of boycotts, divestments and sanctions against Israel, particularly by corporations and universities.
The march should take place during April during the same time as many universities and colleges hold their spring break. College students should be urged not to go to Florida or Texas for their usual spring frolics but to come to Washington and lend their energies to this movement.
The organizers of the march should try to frame it in the spirit of the 1963 March on Washington for civil rights when Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous “I have a dream” speech. Just as that march was against racial injustice in America and for civil rights, this should be presented as a march against the continuing injustice perpetrated by Israel against the Palestinian people and as a demand for their rights and freedom after years of oppression. Also, the successful battle against Africa’s apartheid regime should be invoked here since it is now widely recognized that Israel has itself become an apartheid regime.
Thoughtful consideration should be given to the speakers at this event. They should not only include pro-Palestinian activists, but prominent and widely respected Americans, such as, perhaps, Jimmy Carter, and also some nationally-known celebrities and entertainers who could lend their passionate and articulate voices to this event.
Of course, many correlated events would take place during the days of and following this march in Washington, particularly with activities concerned with getting the new Obama administration and Congress to be responsive to the concerns that this march would forcibly bring to the attention of the American public.
I myself have no organizational skills along these lines, but if you agree that such a march would be worthwhile, then please bring this proposal to the attention of the people and organizations that would have the know-how to put it together.
We have three months to do so. There is no time to waste.
This has to be big, it has to be non-violent, it has to be soon.
It has to be.

By that time the population in Gaza could be already annihilated. What different do you expect of the Obama administration than the Bush administration. One dictatorship with foreign influence replaces the other. You must first have a true democracy, a government of all the people, by all the people, for all the people.

Our ignorance and complacency are all that allow and will potentially allow Bushco and Obamaco to do as they please. A march of the size and intent proposed could not be ignored. Certainly, it might not move mountains, but it could get the ball rolling.
