A VOICE OF REASON SILENCED AT THE JERUSALEM POST

Exactly two months ago I brought attention to the fact that there was at least one voice of reason at the Jerusalem Post. It was that of Larry Derfner, one of the main reasons I even bother to click on their hate filled site. The post I wrote can be read here> A WELCOME SURPRISE AT THE JERUSALEM POST
*
Two days ago Derfner was fired from the Jerusalem Post, not for something he wrote on their pages, but for something he wrote on his personal Blog.
*
In short, this is what he had to say… I think a lot of people who realize that the occupation is wrong also realize that the Palestinians have the right to resist it – to use violence against Israelis, even to kill Israelis, especially when Israel is showing zero willingness to end the occupation…This unwillingness to say outright that Palestinians have the right to fight the occupation, especially now, inadvertently helps keep the occupation going.… If we were to say very forthrightly what many of us believe and the rest of us suspect – that the Palestinians, like every nation living under hostile rule, have the right to fight back, that their terrorism, especially in the face of a rejectionist Israeli government, is justified – what effect would that have? A powerful one, I think, because the truth is powerful.
*
**
In an Apology that followed the next day, he said I have an apology to make for “The awful, necessary truth about Palestinian terror,” which I posted here and on Facebook on Sunday. I didn’t mean to say anything “good” about Palestinian terror against Israelis – I see nothing good in it whatsoever, and I thought I made that clear, but I see now that I didn’t.

*

Needless to say, the apology was not sufficient for the zioterrorist supporters at the Post, and the ‘pink slip’ remained in tact. This could turn into a blessing in disguise as he might find a new desk in the offices of HaAretz, bringing along with him scores of disillusioned readers from the JP.

*

I can’t say I agree with his original statements regarding terrorism. I have always maintained that acts of terrorism against civilians is wrong. But, I look forward to continue reading whatever he has to write.

I’m sad that he apologised because what he said on his blog is the absolute truth. I’m forever surprised that more Palestinians haven’t used violence against their occupiers and I greatly admire those who have chosen a non-violent path of resistance.

Like Deborah, the only part I object to is his craven apology.

And there is also the issue that settlers are not civilians. They are armed paramilitaries, which makes them legitimate military targets under the laws of war. Attacking settlers is not terrorism.

Only through non violence can they gain the international support they desperately need. I don’t condone terrorism or killing civilians, but if I were locked into the ghetto that is Gaza I would surely be fighting back.

Some of the jews in the ghettos during WW2 fought back, violently, are they not terrorists too?

    Never retract
    Never explain
    Never apologize

Speaking truth to power can have a cost. The closer to the lie, the higher the cost

Zulus killed boers, navajos killed pilgrims

it is unfortunate but israelis jews put their families on the front line.another bus load just came in to join the IDF from new york.meanwhile palestinians are dying everyday just because they want to live on their own land. you want security go back where you come from.

it is not a question of balance .violence is the unfortunate finality of jewish ethnocratic racist state in the ME. Dismantle it and you have peace

“Apologies” for doing the right thing are always extracted under threat of some kind. Take Goldstone for instance. I wouldn’t be surprised that the lives of his grandchildren would be snuffed out if he didn’t apologize; He apologized because he knew that they meant every word.

The Palestinians have been relatively restrained in their attacks on Israelis despite the propaganda the Israeli government and the Western media pump out. Even Hamas restrains its followers and observes all ceasefire agreements unless and until the Israeli government defies them. But if non-violence fails to work – and it has failed to work for the Tibetans as well as for the Palestinians – then violent self-defence may be the better if not the best alternative.

I had not known that the settlers in the West Bank were paramilitaries but this news doesn’t surprise me. Violence against the settlers is not terrorism if the settlers attack first and refuse to apologise or compensate Palestinians for their thuggish actions. Many if not most settlers are not even native Israelis but are immigrants from North America, the UK and Australia.

I believe we should put ourselves in the place of the desperately poor Palestinians before advocating a violent response to the Israeli occupation of their land. Certainly their relatives in Saudi Arabia and other Arab states have financing for conducting a war, but that is a far piece from where they are living.

It is like breaking out of a prison by attacking the armed guards with toilet paper left in the cell. No, what is required is further awareness of the dire situation the Palestians are in on the part of the Christian world. We can expect no sympathy from any other militarily powerful nation other than America and her European allies. Which requires breaking the stranglehold the Zionists have on the media. We are doing that by use of the internet and just plain common sense at the local level. Have faith, do not despair, we are coming.

Larry is a great writer but more reason for me not to read the Jerus. Post or the NY post for that reason! Good thing I can still read his ‘Rattling the Cage’ post on Haaretz! We support you Larry! When you tell the truth about the Nazi State Israel the ‘Israeli-Firsters’ can’t handle it! I’m sure if he had wrote article on his ‘personal’ web calling for the squatters to take arms and attack the Palestinians on Sept. 20 he would hae been given a bonus.

I just read that Israel is arming West bank settlers with grenades and gas ahead of the UN vote for Palestine. Why would God’s chosen people need gas and grenades when they have God’s will on their side?
