Israel’s settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are just a pretext for the Arab world to complain, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman insisted on Friday. The official is himself a West Bank settler.

“In terms of facts, our settlements are just a pretext for the Arab world to complain,” Lieberman told the Russian-language REKA radio. “As we all remember, settlements have not prevented us from signing a peace agreement with Egypt.”

He added, “I’d also like to call to mind that we have evacuated tens of settlements in the Gaza Strip. And what do we have now? Hamas in Gaza and Kassams in Sderot.”

Lieberman also said European opposition to the settlements was “a sort of political slogan… there were no Jewish settlements before 1967, but terror, conflicts, and tension never ceased to exist between 1948 and 1967. Furthermore, the Arab world was in control of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip for 19 years, but then, nobody tried to create the Palestinian state.”

The foreign minister lives in the illegal West Bank settlement of Nokdim, near Bethlehem.

Another case of ‘blaming the victim’…….
For over 60 years Israelis have been stealing the water and other resources that belong to the Palestinian people…. but now that the illegal settlements are growing rather than disappearing, the Palestinian’s use of water has become a ‘threat’ to these criminals.

Palestinian farmers in the West Bank, or “water pirates” as Israeli occupation forces prefer to call them, are siphoning off drinking water pipes in an effort to secure water to irrigate their farmland.

Water is an increasingly disputed resource between Israel and the Palestinians.

A World Bank report has accused Israel of using four times more water than Palestinians from the so-called Mountain Aquifer that bridges Israel and the territory and runs along the West Bank. Israel disputes that claim and says the Palestinians are jeopardising the resource through illegal use.

Palestinians argue they are being denied access in order to force them off their land.

This exclusive report from Al Jazeera shows Israeli occupation forces dismantling a farmer’s water pipes in the agricultural village of al-Baqa.

Badran Jaber, a Palestinian farmer, told Al Jazeera: “We were surprised by a large group of soldiers and settlers who surrounded the entire area. We asked them: ‘why are you doing this and what do you want?’ They refused to speak to us.

“Men who came with the soldiers stormed the field and pulled out all the irrigation pipes, destroying the crops.”

Al Jazeera’s Jacky Rowland reports on how Israeli rules blight the lives of many Palestinians.

Nader al-Khateeb, the director of Friends of the Earth in the Middle East, told Al Jazeera: “We are under occupation and everything is restricted by Israeli procedures.

“This policy is not a new policy, there are lots of examples of Israel trying to force Palestinians to leave their land so settlements can expand easily.

“This is an organised Israeli policy designed to prevent the development of the Palestinian economy – knowing that agriculture is a major sector within the economy.”

Dire situation

Amnesty International, said in a report released last month, Israel is denying Palestinians adequate access to clean, safe water while allowing almost unlimited supplies to Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.

Israel’s daily water consumption per capita is four times higher than the 70 litre per person consumed in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, according to the report entitled: Troubled waters – Palestinians denied fair access to water.

“Swimming pools, well-watered lawns and large irrigated farms in Israeli settlements … stand in stark contrast next to Palestinian villages whose inhabitants struggle even to meet their domestic water needs,” the human rights group said.

Israel’s water authority called the report “biased and incorrect, at the very least” and said that while there is a water gap, it is not nearly as big as presented by Amnesty.

The Amnesty report said Israel uses more than 80 per cent of water drawn from the aquifer and while Israel has other water sources, the aquifer is the West Bank’s only supply of water.

In the Gaza Strip, several repair works were under way to improve sanitation before the Israeli blockade was imposed in 2007.

But the projects have been on hold under the siege, as Israel is preventing repair materials from coming into the Strip.

Adding to an already dire situation, Israel’s war on Gaza early this year left water reservoirs, wells, sewage networks and pumping stations severely damaged.

Amnesty said between 180,000 and 200,000 Palestinians in West Bank rural communities have no access to running water, while taps in other areas often run dry.

“Israel allows the Palestinians access to only a fraction of the shared water resources, which lie mostly in the occupied West Bank”, Donatella Rovera, an Amnesty researcher, said.

When we have a situation where the religious leaders of a nation have gone mad, is that an indication that the God they supposedly serve has also gone mad?

We have seen and heard rabbis in high position call for the complete annihilation of the Palestinian people, we have heard these very same ’sages’ call for the deportation of non Jews from the ‘Holy Land’…..

Now we see the chief rabbi of the Israeli army telling his troops that if they “show mercy to the enemy they will be dammed”….

Is it any wonder that the settler terrorist, Ya’akov Teitel, arrested a few weeks ago claimed that “God is proud of me.” A report on this madman can be read HERE.

With the religious edicts issued lately one can understand his logic.

So, as the title of this post asks, Has the God of the Jews lost His mind, or is it time for Him to replace those that speak on His behalf?

The following report is the latest on the rantings of these madmen…..

IDF Chief Rabbi: Troops who show mercy to enemy will be ‘damned’

By Anshel Pfeffer

The Israel Defense Forces’ chief rabbi told students in a pre-army yeshiva program last week that soldiers who “show mercy” toward the enemy in wartime will be “damned.”

Brig. Gen. Avichai Rontzki also told the yeshiva students that religious individuals made better combat troops.

Speaking Thursday at the Hesder yeshiva in the West Bank settlement of Karnei Shomron , Rontzki referred to Maimonides’ discourse on the laws of war. That text quotes a passage from the Book of Jeremiah stating: “Cursed be he that doeth the work of the Lord with a slack hand, and cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood.”

In Rontzki’s words, “In times of war, whoever doesn’t fight with all his heart and soul is damned – if he keeps his sword from bloodshed, if he shows mercy toward his enemy when no mercy should be shown.”

Rontzki’s remarks came during a ceremony to celebrate a new Torah scroll at the yeshiva. The service was held in commemoration of Yosef Fink, one of two yeshiva students kidnapped by Hezbollah in 1986.

Their bodies were returned 10 years later in a prisoner exchange.

Rontzki also referred specifically to the Israel Defense Forces’ conduct during Operation Cast Lead in Gaza. “Apropos all that we’ve heard in the media of late, thank God that the people of Israel has united recently around the simple understanding of how it must fight. One of the major innovations of that offensive was the conduct of war – not as some kind of mission or detention.”

“We all remember the beginning of the war, with a major attack of 80 planes bombing various places, and then artillery, mortar and tank fire and so forth, as in war,” he said. “Everyone fought with all their heart and soul, and that includes bravery of course, but also fighting with all the resources one has – to fight as if to truly determine the mission.”

Rontzki also referred to the qualities of the ideal combat soldier.

“In Israel’s wars, warriors are God-fearing people, righteous people, people who don’t have sins on their hands,” he said. “One needs to fight with an understanding of what one is fighting for.”

“If apartheid (in South Africa) ended, so can this occupation, but the moral force and international pressure will have to be just as determined. The current divestment effort is the first…move in this direction.”

Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, October 2002

‘Palestinian babies in Gaza are being born blue because the water is full of nitrates. It gets the nitrates from the sewerage in it. White phosphorus was used there that burns through peoples flesh. Boycott, divestment, and sanctions are urgent. There is a slow deliberate policy of genocide in Gaza.’ These were some of the opening comments made by Omar Barghouti, at a November 6th forum organized by New York University Students for Justice in Palestine and the Adalah-N.Y. Coalition for Justice in the Middle East on the subject of Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions: A Quest for Justice, Human Rights, and Peace. The panelists were: Omar Barghouti, human rights advocate and founding member of the Palestinian civil society campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel and the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel. Nancy Krikorian, the N.Y. Coordinator of CodePink will discuss it’s “Stolen Beauty” boycott campaign against the Israeli company Ahava, which is manufactured in a West Bank settlement (colony) and appropriates it’s ingredients in occupied Palestinian territory. Ryvka Bar Zohar is a PhD candidate at NYU’s Department of Middle East and Islamic Studies and a member of the N.Y. Campaign for the Boycott of Israel. NYCBI organized a campaign to boycott communications giant Motorola over it’s sale of technology to the Israeli army and the settlement movement. She also works as a Jewish educator in N.Y.C. synagogue schools where she engages students in critical thinking about the culture, history, and living situations of both Palestinians and Israelis.

Apartheid, explained Barghouti, is a well defined crime against humanity, and the definition fits the situation in Israel. There are 2 sets of laws: one for Jews and one for non-Jews. The Palestinians in Israel are not nationals, and only nationals can have rights. Israel is a state for Jews. Non-Jews can be citizens but they cannot be nationals, so, under that system there cannot be equality. Palestinians have to appeal to the people of the world to help them change their situation. There is genocide in Gaza, ethnic cleansing on the West Bank, and the Palestinian citizens of Israel do not have equal rights. The U.S. singles out Israel for privileged treatment despite all their human rights abuses and condemned the Goldstone Report for declaring that Israel had committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. The mainstream media in the U.S. doesn’t report Israel’s human rights abuses.

The BDS movement has appealed to the conscience of the world. It is based on universalistic principles – it is anti-racist and non-violent. The goals are to end the occupation, facilitate the right of the Palestinian refugees to return to their homes, ensure equal rights for all citizens of Israel, and to pressure Israel to comply with basic principles of justice and international law. Anti-Semitism is not allowed. The Jewish people are not responsible for what Israel does. The movement takes no position on political issues, for example, it does not say whether a 1 state or a 2 state solution would be better.

Progress in the BDS Campaign has been slowest in the United States. It is moving much more quickly in Europe and elsewhere. Trade unions in Britain, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, and South Africa are supporting it. Dock workers in South Africa have refused to unload Israeli ships. The Student Union at Sussex University is supporting it. Sanctions have been applied against Israel in Norway, Sweden, and Spain. Arab societies are supporting it while their governments are not. Many Jewish groups are saying “Not in our name” and supporting BDS. The World Council of Churches has partially divested. With modern technology it is possible to move the campaign further and faster. Mr. Barghouti concluded by saying that the U.S. is spending billions on the military in Israel and elsewhere in the world while depriving American civil society of basic essentials – health care, education, etc. It is up to us, the American people, to determine what U.S. interests are. Are corporate benefits more important than the interests of the people?

The next speaker, Nancy Krikorian, explained that after the Israeli invasion of Gaza a year ago, CodePink believed that they had to get involved in the issue of Palestinian rights. CodePink has sent several delegations to Gaza, both fact-finding and bringing humanitarian aid. They believe that BDS is a moral and strategic tactic. Ahava is an illegal settlement product and the company is profiting from the occupation. While in Tel Aviv, Medea Benjamin, one of CodePink’s founders, and several CodePink members occupied the Ahava store in their hotel and had a protest demonstration there. During the attack on Gaza, women in London took over an Ahava store there and blockaded it. When New York’s Central Park created a Tel Aviv beach as part of rebranding Israel, CodePink women came in bikinis and carried anti-occupation signs. Film and television actor, Kristin Davis was the spokesperson for Ahava in the U.S.. What the company was doing was explained to her and she made no response. Davis was also the spokesperson for Oxfam. When Oxfam learned about her association with Ahava they let her go. This brought bad publicity for Ahava so they let her go also.

Ahava has pulled the list of where their product is sold off their website. Women in Austria and Canada have joined the boycott. Ahava is a large company and the boycott may not make a huge dent in their profits, but it is making people aware of Israel’s illegal and immoral policies against the Palestinians.

Ryvka Bar Zohar described the campaign by NYCBI and Adalah being waged against diamond dealer, Lev Leviev, and Motorola. Motorola produces product fuses and detonators for bombs used in Israel. They also produce advanced communications systems, including radar and cameras, that are used on the West Bank by settlers who want to track Palestinians outside their settlements. Having this technology makes the settlements more permanent. After the boycott started Motorola sold their Israeli division.

Lev Leviev is a billionaire who owns diamond mines in Angola and Namibia. He is the largest cutter and polisher of diamonds in the world. He also builds West Bank settlements. There is a public and a private part of the BDS campaign against Leviev. In the public part there are street actions outside his Madison Avenue store – especially before holidays when people are buying gifts. There is an attempt to be eye-catching and creative with signs and songs. Privately, letters have been sent to charities, that list him as a benefactor, describing what he is doing. He has been dropped from the sponsor list of several charities, including UNICEF. Being dropped from these sponsor lists is a serious blow to his prestige. It is also an opportunity to make people more aware of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians – which is a blow to Israel’s prestige.

During the question and answer period several issues were raised. A student asked what BDS should mean to his fellow NYU students? Mr. Barghouti explained that the campaign included an academic and cultural boycott and the universities are being asked to cut their institutional ties with Israeli universities. It is particularly important at NYU because NYU is about to open a campus at Tel Aviv University. That was the university where the Dalia Doctrine originated. That military doctrine said that civilians should be attacked in order to get them to pressure their government into capitulation. It was the policy Israel used against the people in Lebanon. The academic boycott applied to institutional ties to schools – not individuals.

The cultural aspect of BDS applies to performers. Those who support the occupation, are part of Israel’s rebranding campaign, are ambassadors for Israel, or are part of a whitewash of the oppression of Palestinians, should not be invited to perform. There should be no deceptive image of normalcy, no normalization of Israeli oppression, and Palestinian rights have to be recognized.

There is no boycott of Israeli movies unless there is Israeli money involved in the distribution of the film. Recently the Israeli government put money into the Edinburgh Film Festival. Director Ken Loach told the festival that he would withdraw his film unless the money was returned to Israel. Edinburgh returned the money rather than lose the Loach film.

Barghouti said that without resistance the colonialists will never give up power and privilege. Every victory is important, even if it is small. It raises the spirit of the oppressed. There is not a lot of time – people of conscience have to work hard because at the rate things are going, within 25 years the Palestinian people will have been destroyed.

The recent decision by Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas not to seek a second term in office has already thrown into question the continued survival of the Oslo peace process as well as the future of the PA itself.

Most Palestinians have interpreted Abbas’s decision as a frank — though belated — admission of the failure of the peace process with Israel.

In his speech on Thursday, 5 November, Abbas didn’t mourn that process much. But he did suggest that it was pointless to walk any further along the current path given Israel’s adamant refusal to stop settlement expansion and the Obama administration’s refusal to force Israel to give up the spoils of the 1967 war.

Abbas did ask the Palestinian people to continue to believe in the eventuality of peace. However, he also gave the impression that true and just peace with Israel was a distant dream if not unrealistic.

It is still uncertain if Abbas will reconsider his decision under the influence of incessant calls to that effect by his supporters, especially within the Fatah organisation.

However, most Palestinian pundits seem to unanimously agree that the Palestinian leader won’t do so unless he receives real “concessions” from Israel with regards to the settlements issue. Otherwise, Abbas would lose face and give Israel and the US an additional reason not to take him seriously the next time he triggers a crisis over the peace process.

Abbas’s decision has raised many questions as to how the PA will survive his absence and the virtual death of the peace process. After all, that process, which provided a certain promise that the Palestinians would eventually rid themselves of Israel’s military occupation, has always been the main raison d’être of the PA. Hence, the PA would be effectively reduced to a mere subcontractor of the Israeli occupation if that promise vanished as most Palestinians seem to believe it has.

But the problem goes beyond the ostensible failure and imminent collapse of the peace process. Abbas is probably the most moderate Palestinian leader from the Israeli and Western viewpoint. It is inconceivable, at least at this juncture, that any other Fatah substitute who would replace Abbas would be willing to accommodate Israeli whims, especially on matters related to Jerusalem and the settlements.

Hence one Fatah leader in Ramallah questioned the “wisdom” of appointing a successor to Abbas under the current political conditions. “What would any potential successor to Abbas be able to do? Abbas has given the Americans and Israelis all they want. He went to the greatest extent possible in order to demonstrate Palestinian desire for peace. But look how they have treated him.”

The source added, on condition of anonymity: “They [America and Israel] wanted Abbas to be a full-fledged collaborator working against the interests of his own people. They were not willing to accept a dignified Palestinian partner. They didn’t want partners, they only wanted to see collaborators, such as the current rulers of Afghanistan and Iraq.”

So far, the Obama administration has been reticent about these latest developments in the occupied West Bank. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, whom Abbas specifically blamed for convincing President Obama not to pressure Israel on the settlements issue, said she would continue to work with the Palestinian leader in whatever new capacity he might choose. The allusion here is to the possibility that Abbas might retain his more important post as head of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, which is uncertain to say the least.

Spokespersons at the State Department and White House called on Abbas to reconsider and to give the peace process another chance.

It is uncertain what steps the Obama administration would take if Abbas made good on his undertaking not to run in the Palestinian general elections, scheduled for 24 January. Indeed, the elections themselves have been thrown into question by Abbas’s speech. After all, many Palestinians, including many Fatah leaders, question the rationality of holding elections when all political horizons have been completely closed and no successor to Abbas is known.

Some pundits suggest that the Obama administration might seek “another” Palestinian Karzai — a strongman like Mohamed Dahlan. However, it is near certain that any meddling from Washington would cause Fatah to implode from within with such a new leader being viewed by the majority of Palestinians as an American agent. Another possibility is that the US would further boost the status of Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, enabling him to function as de facto Palestinian leader in lieu of Abbas. But this prospect, too, is fraught with uncertainty because Fayyad is bereft of a popular base despite attempts to build one.

Earlier this week, Fayyad and his ministers threatened to collectively resign their posts if Abbas left the Palestinian political scene. It is not clear though if this was a stunt, or a real threat. The resignation of the Fayyad government, coupled with Abbas’s resignation, would deal a serious blow to the PA and might bring about its complete collapse.

Such a collapse would force Israel to re-assume all the tasks and responsibilities of an occupying power. In this case, Israel would be faced with two undesirable scenarios: the likely resumption of violence and resistance by all Palestinian factions, including Fatah; or rising Palestinian demands for a one-state solution whereby Israel would have to grant Palestinians equal rights as citizens in a unitary and democratic state extending from the River Jordan to the Mediterranean.

This last option is anathema to Israel and many Jews since it would herald the end of classical Zionism and auger the ultimate prospect of Israel losing its Jewish majority.

There have been reports that the Obama administration might opt to overcome the present crisis by declaring its recognition of a prospective Palestinian state based on 1967 borders. Israel is already jittery about this prospect and has been seeking “clarifications” from Washington in this regard.

However, while such an acknowledgment on Washington’s part would be a remarkable event for increasingly frustrated Palestinians, it would do little to change reality on the ground, as Israel has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to overrule and disregard American decisions, especially if these decisions are not coordinated with Israel beforehand.

Israel’s recent defiance of the Obama administration on the settlements issue is clear evidence to that effect.

In the Gaza War cemetary, roughly 360 graves were damaged in the Israeli massacre, according to the cemetary groundsman, Ibrahim Jeradeh. He says the majority of the damage was from shelling in the areas around the cemetary, as it lies withine 2km of the eastern border between Gaza Palestine and Israel.

Yet, these graves, mainly of British and Commonwealth soldiers who died in the 1st and 2nd world wars, are well-kept and have the funding, and wasta (sway with authorities) needed to have cement allotted to their repair.

The graveyards of Christian and Muslim Palestinians have no such pull, meaning they abound with sandy pits as photographed. Further, a number of cemetaries sustained considerable damage from intentional Israeli bulldozing and shelling of the graveyards.

Walking through the Faluja cemetary, vivid memories of the day after overcome me. The day after the Fakoura school attack, when the bodies, tiny and eldery, were carried on sheets of aluminum, planks of scrap wood, blown off doors…to the overcrowded graveyard in Beit Lahia, that day also overcrowded with mourners. Collective grief hung in the air. These images will never be erased from my memory. Like the elderly father scraping at sand and earth with his bare hands, burying one of his children. Like the many tiny graves marked simply by cement blocks, stones, or plants. Like the teen, sitting on a sand mound, mourning, his jacket covered with LOVE. The irony. So much love here, but so many tragedies.

Former Israeli ambassador Dore Gold wanted the last word after his matchup with Judge Richard Goldstone at Brandeis University last week. If it wasn’t obvious during the testy exchange between the two, it became clear when Gold convened a news conference following the two-hour debate on Thursday night. (Click here to watch the debate).

“I’m not here because the government of Israel sent me,” he told reporters, as he hammered home his arguments again and again. On a main point – Israel’s refusal to cooperate with the probe – Gold said cooperation would not have improved the final report, which charged Israel and Hamas with war crimes during Operation Cast Lead in Gaza last winter. “This was a fixed fact-finding mission,” Gold said. “It wasn’t looking for the truth. It was looking for a narrative that condemned Israel and let Hamas off the hook.”

Then why did Gold agree to the debate?

To be sure, the event was a landmark occasion: a former Israeli diplomat appearing on stage with the South African jurist named by the UN to probe Israel’s actionsduring Operation Cast Lead . In fact, hours before Gold and Goldstone were introduced, the UN General Assembly in New York approved a resolution fully endorsing thereport and paving the way for the matter to be taken up in the Security Council and down the road, the international courts.

Invited by Brandeis, Gold came to this sleepy college town armed with aerial maps, video and sound clips and other evidence showing how Israel warned Gaza civilians of its impending actions. “I obviously did a great deal of my own preparations,” he said, insisting that all of the materials he used were in the public domain. In other words, he used “material the UN Gaza mission could have obtained itself,” he told The Jerusalem Post. “It didn’t need Israeli participation,” he said.

Given the chance to hear an Israeli response to a topic that has dominated headlines since September, when the Goldstone report was made public, hundreds of students, professors and members of the local Jewish community packed into an auditorium at Brandeis. The event was also streamed live over the Web.

I have not been to Beirut since I was five years old (but I do remember some things of it) and I was a bit nervous since much has happened in the decades since. Lebanon and Palestine together with Jordan and Syria have always been connected; only after the British and French decided to divide us and give part of the land to European Jews to replace the natives that we became separated and disconnected (and sometimes querreling). I was invited as a representative of the Applied Research Institute of Jerusalem for a conference on water rights in the Jordan River basin [1]. Our Lebanese hosts treated us like family: extremely gracious and hospitable. I was also anxious to visit the refugee camps in Lebanon and meet with activists (Lebanese and Palestinian) who I knew via the internet. I had written extensively on refugees and even reviewed a book on the massacre of Sabra and Shatila [2]. (I was told that camps in the north and in the south need a special army permission to enter.). I met with some refugees from Mar Elias and other camps in Lebanon and on Monday visited the Arab Resource Center for Popular Arts [3] which serves Lebanese and Palestinian youth from marginalized communities. An old friend (Raja Mattar) from Jafa who runs Palestine Student Aid arranged for a young Palestinian to take me to on an early morning trip to Sabra and Shatila. We met in front of the grandiose Crown Plaza hotel in the opulent AlHamra Street and the cab takes us to the edge of the camp and as we try to enter, the traffic snarls (the roads are really not designed for two way traffic). So we leave the cab stuck in the traffic and walk. I need to walk. We pass by a marketplace were the marginalized do their shopping (Lebanese and Palestinian). The market has everything from vegetables to used (and rather dirty looking) cloths and shoes to pieces of pipes, to books. Each of these things is laid out separately with their owners trying to sell their products to people who are just as poor as they are. Most of these stalls are not stalls at all but rather a sheet of plastic or even newspapers on which they had spread the “goods” they are trying to peddle. From what I observed, some of them would happily sell you all the contents of their area for less than $20. I have of course been to marketplaces in poor areas but this was a bit different. The appearance is of a busy market place where things are bought and sold for very inexpensive prices (usually less than a dollar which here equals 1500 Lebanese liras). But as we move through the “market place”. But it is not a noisy place; the vendors were not calling out like they do in Bethlehem. There was little of the sounds of buying and selling of haggling of jokes. It was a subdued affair that puzzled me. Perhaps more merchants than customers I thought. Maybe it was not the peak time of shopping. It is as if it was a museum where visitors move around and look in silence at paintings occasionally asking in hushed subdued voices about something that intrigues them. As we get closer to the camp, the smell really becomes stronger. It is hard to describe it, a mixture of sewage and decaying trash, a pungent odor that perhaps is the opposite of fresh air, a staleness that and suffocating harshness that makes me wonder if I am hallucinating. But then we make a turn into the camp and nothing prepared me for this. I have been to over 30 refugee camps in Jordan and the West Bank and I did expect the refugee camps in Lebanon to be worse. I have read a lot and even seen pictures and some videos but still I was shocked by what I saw, what I smelled, what I heard and what I felt. The words I write cannot do justice to this. As I was videotaping and I was hoping to move my camera up to videotape the jumble of hundreds of crisscrossed wires overhead (home made infrastructure to bring electricity and phone service to those who could make the right connections (figuratively and literally), I hear a women’s voice addressing me. “Shoo bitsawwer” (what are you photographing)? The first thing that occurs to me is that she will complain about my photographing (that happens in conservative societies) and I mumble something about coming from Bethlehem and touring the camp and she starts to tell me about the clinic doctor. I am a bit confused. She says there is one doctor and hundreds of patients. And that she could not get the doctor in the UNRWA clinic to see her daughter. It was then that I noticed the girl shyly hiding behind her mother. I make stupid useless words since I really don’t know what to say as her daughter tells her to move on. I go back to videotaping the wires and the political posters and the people. Children are everywhere and they like my camera. I note no toys around, no bicycles, no balls, no squeaky ducks or stuffed animals. A couple of the kids have found things that they considered toys: a stick, a rubber band, a segment of a plastic pipe. Some have even connected these things to make things with no use. I videotape some of them and rewind and show them their smiley faces. I smile and speak to them feeling like I do with my own family. But my mind is tortured. I fight back the tears as I pan my camera from their smiley faces to the open sewers that are running right next to them. This is their playgrounds I think. Most of them have never been outside of this camp. This is all they know. A man tells the kids to leave us alone.

A woman at a window on the second floor beats an old rug to get rid of the dust. My “guide” Waseem warns me about puddles or obstacles in the narrow alleys (there must a better word to describe a meter wide dirt opening between dense dwellings in impoverished areas, maybe masarib in Arabic?). Waseem is from Nahr El Bared, a camp that was essentially completely destroyed by shelling as the Lebanese army fought a group of extremists. The camp is still not reconstructed so his family lives at the edge of camp in temporary dwellings. Anyway, we go back to taking in the sounds, smell, feel, and sight of this camp. Too many emotions run over me and not one of them uplifting. We pass by the UNRWA clinic and I see lots of Palestinian mothers going in with their children. Right next to it, there are some workers using a jackhammer to dig the street. The kids jumping around and over the open hole in the ground (yes with sewage) almost seemed like they were mocking the work. My first analytic thought comes to mind: this is not a place to try to fix anything at the margins, it should all be changed, and these people need to go back to their villages from where they were ethnically cleansed. But then I feel strangely guilty for thinking something I have thought of a million times before and have worked hard on. The guilt is maybe due to the fact that here and now, I actually can do very, very little. The hopeless tangle of wires, pipes, shaky dwellings seemed not to be of help to thousands living here. But now it seemed that the infrastructure has its own life and that the people are not its friend but its foe and I am now trapped with them although for a short time. I remember a horror movie I saw as a kid and simply think that before my father died, I should have asked him if at age 5 when we visited Beirut, did we visit the refugee camp and if not why not. Time is an enemy and we have other commitments. We make our way to go to the edge of the camp where there is a memorial for the 1982 massacre. The memorial is in a fenced yard) behind another street that was remade into an open marketplace. It seems slightly busier than the other marketplace. In front of the entrance they are selling watches, cloths, and shoes but inside the only inhabitants are a group of chickens (strangely of a fancy breed). The memorial is neglected, empty and quite except for the muffled sounds from the street. There are banners that seem to be old and fading. Here the camp smell I described earlier is replaced by another smell, the smell of death mixed with chicken feathers. Or maybe I am hallucinating since it is actually relatively clean place. Maybe I am now totally crazy. Waseem seems even more subdued here. He finally points to another banner and simply says, “this is to commemorate other Israeli massacres.” I take short clips of video and I remember merely walking out and not looking back. Waseem tells me not to video on the street outside the camp because of presence of military people and the Kuwaiti embassy (that is heavily fortified). But I had not intended to do that anyway. We walk in silence. Later in the taxi, away from it all, I start to ask him about himself: he just graduated an electrical engineer. No jobs for people like him from the camps. Nothing to do. He refuses to let me pay for the cab either way. I go back to my hotel room and only then I cry. I cry for these refugees abandoned by an uncaring world, I cry for all the other things I heard and felt on this trip, and I cry for our injured humanity. In visiting the American University of Beirut (where so many Palestinians studied including my uncle who died young at age 27 after finishing his PhD), there is a McDonalds hamburger joint right in front of the University. A day later in Jordan being driven by my friend Zuhair to his house, we pass by Jordan University and I see another Macdonald also in front of the University. I complain about this globalization (especially of Zionist-run Starbucks and other franchises that aid ethnic cleansing and hurts our causes). Zuhair reminds me that there are so many people who collaborate in the rape of Palestine and so many people who just stand there and watch. There are really few activists like the ones I met in Beirut. But we reminisce that good people (Jordanian, Lebanese, Palestinians, and Internationals) make a difference in society every day. It has always been like that. The institute that invited us (Ibrahim Abd-ElAl Institute) represent the memory of such a person and the attendees represent such people): individuals who do not put personal interest ahead of people interests, individuals who care and who act on this caring. Those are the people who give us hope for a better future where we all work together against apathy and against the evil that keeps us apart.

WASHINGTON, DC – The struggle for civil rights, freedom and independence is not unique to the Palestinian people. Many nations have traveled the same road. Palestinians today have the advantage of looking back and learning from those who succeeded in their struggles.

The American civil rights movement in particular has important lessons for those working to forge peace between Israelis and Palestinians. It succeeded in using non-violent strategies to bring about the end of legally sanctioned segregation in the United States. What principles can the Palestinians learn from the movement?

The civil rights movement in the United States based its struggle on messages that were hard to disagree with, even for those who did not identify with its aims and objectives. Prominent civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., for instance, reminded the American people of one of the most basic principles in their constitution: “all men are created equal”. He highlighted the law of humanity and lifted it above man-made laws. He called any law or practice that denigrates human dignity or limits freedom unnatural and immoral, and said these laws shouldn’t be obeyed because they inspire a false sense of superiority in one race against another. He touched people’s hearts by reasoning with them and speaking their own language.

Dr. King appealed to the deepest consciousness of the American people. He invoked the highest standard of American values: the constitution and the writings of the founding fathers. Thus, his appeals reached millions of American people and resonated within their hearts and minds.

In the same way, Palestinians can reach the hearts and minds of the Jewish citizens of Israel by appealing to their hopes and fears, ideals and principles. But as Israel has no constitution, this means calling on the Hebrew Scriptures and Jewish traditions.

By presenting Jewish morals, standards and beliefs in a new light, Palestinians can make their arguments more salient to Israelis. For example, the words of the prophet Isaiah are particularly resonant, especially as they are read during the Yom Kippur service: “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?”

Moses’ cry to Pharaoh is also powerful: “Let my people go”. Moses was asking for freedom, and his words are sharper than any sword. It is a phrase that can reach the hearts of the Jewish community far more effectively than any angry slogan or threat.

Palestinians should also appeal to Israel’s democratic ideals. As Israel maintains a belief in liberty and self-determination, so should Palestinians insist that Israel live up to its own ideals. This means highlighting that true democracy cannot allow for the occupation and oppression of others.

In recent years, many Palestinians have chosen non-violence as a form of resistance, from weekly demonstrations against the Israeli separation barrier to economic and cultural boycotts. However the majority of activities have been unilateral or have failed to reach the mainstream Israeli public.

In America, the civil rights movement geared its campaign toward the large silent majority of white Christians. It is time for Palestinians and Jews who support freedom to do something similar, and call on Israel to uphold the principles it claims to espouse. This appeal should not just be made with words, but through non-violent actions aimed at evoking symbols that will reach every Israeli and Jew, from the soldiers at the checkpoints and the settlers in the West Bank to the businesspeople in Tel Aviv.

The Palestinian struggle shares many similarities with Jewish history. From its fight for existence to the Diaspora experience, Jews and Palestinians have both desired a secure and free homeland.

These struggles have been burdened by disappointment. Here we can also learn from the American Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King wrote in his letter from Birmingham Jail about his own disappointment, but he did not let his frustration distract him from his ultimate goal. Instead, he kept building bridges between people who were divided by walls of fear, racism and even hatred. He was sustained by a belief that he was not fighting a war that would be won or lost by conventional weapons, but a struggle for the triumph of humanity over extremism.

Palestinians, like King, should fight not only for freedom, but also for humanity to defeat separation and prejudice.

###

The Obama Administration proved twice recently that it intends to continue to consider Israel above the law. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton caused consternation amongst the US’s allies in the Palestinian Authority and across the region by declaring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s intention to “restrict” settlement activity in the West Bank “unprecedented.” Netanyahu’s restriction restricts very little. Three thousand housing units that are already approved will be built. Netanyahu announced plans for building a new settlement in Jerusalem, Ma’aleh David, while settlers continue their violent assault against Palestinians, intending to expel them from the city. Last week, settlers invaded a Palestinian house, backed by a court order. The US responded with a statement calling Israel’s moves “unhelpful,” but did nothing to stop them.

If Obama’s first message to the Palestinians as elected president went to those living in the occupied West Bank — as president-elect he was quiet during Israel’s winter invasion of Gaza — the second was to the families of the thousands of victims of that three-week attack. Last week the US voted against a UN General Assembly resolution to endorse the findings of the Goldstone report, which calls for Israel and Hamas to investigate allegations of war crimes. Hamas accepted the report. Israel, which killed 1,417 Palestinians, 926 of them civilians, including 437 children, according to the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, did not. The US consented to Israel’s disapproval and initiated a campaign in the UN to discredit the report. The facts in the report remained unchallenged.

The US House of Representatives condemned the report as “one-sided and distorted.” In a letter to the sponsors of the resolution, Judge Goldstone pointed out gross “inaccuracies” in the resolution. It is probable that most of those who voted for the resolution, sponsored by the powerful lobby American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), did not read the 575-page report. What’s called “support for Israel” in Congress has achieved the status of a sacred cow. Dissent comes only at significant political cost, and inevitable smear campaigns by the pro-Israel lobby. Notwithstanding these facts, 36 representatives opposed the resolution, and 22 abstained, signs that the lobby’s control of Congress may be cracking slightly. In contrast, the House was almost unanimous in its support of the Israeli offensive in January.

The US has a long history of vetoes to protect Israel from accountability. During the Nixon presidency, in 1972, the US first used its veto power in the Security Council to protect Israel. This was its second veto overall, preventing the passing of a resolution that would have condemned Israel for the killing of hundreds of civilians in air raids against Syria and Lebanon. The US has since used its veto power more than 40 times to give Israel a free hand to commit atrocities against Palestinians and the region’s peoples.

Bush Administration Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, defending the US’s refusal to support a cease-fire during the 2006 assaults on Lebanon and Gaza, said that “It is time for a new Middle East, it is time to say to those who do not want a different kind of Middle East that we will prevail; they will not.” The “new Middle East” that Rice was referring to is one where Israel can continue to occupy the land of millions, kill thousands and kidnap hundreds, all the while running roughshod over human rights and international law.

Susan Rice, the Obama Administration ambassador to the UN, is scarcely distinguishable from the other top diplomat sharing her last name. She said in an interview with The Washington Post that the Goldstone “mandate was unbalanced, one-sided and unacceptable.” She justifies this statement by claiming that it was “85 percent oriented towards very specific and harsh condemnation and conclusions related to Israel.”

Yet, even if Judge Goldstone had wanted to dedicate an equal number of pages to both sides, there is only so much one can write about the three Israeli civilians killed by Palestinian fighters, or of the holes punched in roofs by the home-made projectiles. The difference in power, Israel’s status under international law as an occupying power, and the catastrophe that befell a besieged population that had nowhere to flee (unprecedented in modern warfare) suggest nearly indisputable grounds for substantiating the allegations of “war crimes” and “crimes against humanity.” Moreover, all that the report asked for were credible investigations and prosecution for those found to merit it. Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Daniel Ayalon said that Israel arrived at a “silent understanding” with the Obama Administration that a veto will be applied if there are attempts made to put the report before the Security Council following the UN General Assembly vote.

But there is a glimmer of hope that the people of Gaza will see justice. The massacre brought about sweeping change, across the world, in perceptions of Israel. Citizen-led mobilizations in the past few months have showed that where governments have failed, ordinary citizens can, perhaps, make a difference. Even in the US, where public support for Israel has been consistently high, a discourse supporting justice for Palestinians is now voiced in mainstream media. Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was met with a frigid reception in a series of lectures around the country, with audience members interrupting constantly, calling for his immediate arrest. Moreover, there are signs that opposition to AIPAC’s dominance within the Jewish American community is gaining strength.

The movement for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) called for by Palestinian civil society in 2005 has also gained momentum, as the Norwegian government has divested from Elbit Systems as a result of its role in the construction of the apartheid wall. Last month, an Israeli deputy prime minister was forced to cancel a trip to the UK for fear of arrest. He has since announced that he will forgo all trips to European capitals.

And while the world’s most powerful governments cavil over making Israel comply with international law, their citizens do not. Some of them — some of us — are taking up the banner of the international nonviolent struggle, staying loyal to principles of human rights and international law, following the wishes of the Palestinian people. In December, we will march in solidarity with the Palestinians living imprisoned in Gaza. In December, the Gaza Freedom March will attempt to lift the siege of Gaza, as we commemorate the one-year anniversary of Israel’s invasion. From 29-31 December, we will move through Rafah and Khan Younis and Gaza City, the length of the Strip, with a host of luminaries including Alice Walker and Walden Bello. On 31 December, we will march to the threshold of the Erez crossing. The peoples of nearly every continent will be there, in Gaza, demanding that the world take action, that the leaders of the world recognize their peoples’ solidarity with the Palestinian struggle, and recognize the inhumanity of the siege, and end it. Punishing a people in this way is not only illegal. It is wrong. It is time to make it stop.

In his lifetime, Yasser Arafat, the late Palestinian leader, was always a controversial figure. To his supporters, he was almost a god-like character who saved the Palestinian national cause from what could have been a definitive demise. It was probably thanks to Arafat (and the resilient steadfastness of our people) that the Palestinians have survived as a people in spite of history, a history that has always been and continues to be unkind to us.

Arafat had often to wrestle with death wherever he went and was able to survive the machinations and exploits of his internal and external enemies…until his time came.

To his enemies, who were many and diverse, he was a mercurial, unethical and dishonest figure. Arafat had to navigate the treacherous precipices of the Middle East by often appeasing and placating Arab despots from Abdul Nasser to Saddam Hussein who often seriously undermined the Palestinian cause thanks to their unscrupulous policies and scandalous miscalculations.

Now in the belly of earth for five years, Arafat is still as controversial as he was alive, and many questions are still unresolved as to the real circumstances surrounding his death. Was he really poisoned by the Israeli intelligence? Did some of his aides play a role in poisoning him? Did the current PLO leadership connive with Israel to kill Arafat, as Fatah’ leader Farouk al Qaddumi claimed a few months ago?

The Palestinian Authority asserted on many occasions that Arafat was killed by way of poisoning by secret Israeli agents. Arafat’s personal physician supported this hypothesis. But this view contravenes the French medical report which established that Arafat died of the AIDS illness.

So far, the PA and the PLO have utterly failed to carry out a thorough and genuine investigation into Arafat’s death despite the passage of five year.

Even today, the Palestinian people don’t know the exact circumstances of his death. Similarly, his widow, Suha, continues to refuse to divulge the secrets surrounding his death.

Arafat’s nephew Nasser Al-Qidwa has affirmed that Israel and Israel alone is responsible for uncle’s death.

Al-Qidwa pointed out in a speech marking the fifth anniversary of Arafat’s death, in Ramallah Wednesday, 11 November, that the late Palestinian leader “ was poisoned by Israel and died a martyr’s death” and that “ we are determined to obtain the last piece of evidence” which will uncover the whole truth about his death.”

True, it is extremely difficult to say for sure who stood behind the “liquidation” of Arafat if indeed he was liquidated by way of inserting poison into his food or body.

Nonetheless, in the absence of a real investigation by a professional and credible committee, questions will continue to be asked as to whether there was a conspiracy in which some of his closest aides were involved.

In short, the Palestinian people are entitled to know the truth about what exactly happened. As to the reluctance of the PA and the PLO to tell the truth in this regard, it can only mean that they either have something to hide from the people and are afraid of divulging the truth, or that they are breaching the trust of their people.

Another matter: It is well known that Yasser Arafat, who during his lifetime held all the reins, took all the decisions, and controlled all the money, left hundreds of millions of dollars deposited under his name.

Hence, the Palestinian people want also to know where these hundreds of millions went and how they disappeared. After all, these were the people’s monies, and every Palestinian man, woman and child has a legitimate right to know the full truth in this regard.

In recent years, it was reported on several occasions that certain Fatah and PLO figures held a secret agreement with Suha Arafat a few weeks after his death. According to the agreement, Arafat’s widow received a huge amount of money in return for her “silence.”

One report pointed out that Suha, who was living in Tunis until two years ago, transferred $50 million dollars to a Maltese bank. Her brother is the PLO ambassador to Malta.

The veracity of the report was neither confirmed nor denied which really raises a big question mark about the indulgence of the PLO leadership in a huge “foul play” at the expense of the Palestinian people.

As a journalist, I once confronted some senior PLO officials with this issue. At the beginning, they tried to evade the subject, but when I pressed them further, they told me that I had to carry out a thorough investigation and obtain a damning evidence corroborating “these allegations.” I told them that an investigation as such would require an entire state apparatus and that in any case a journalist’s job wouldn’t go beyond raising the issue. At this point, I was told “to put up or shut up.”

I have no doubt that a big foul play occurred concerning the hefty bank accounts left by the late Palestinian leader. Similarly, I have no doubt that certain PLO figures, people such Muhammed Rashid, aka Khaled Salam, and are hiding sensitive pertinent information in this regard.

I am not suggesting that these people be hounded or harmed in any way. However, it is imperative that these people must be thoroughly investigated in order to establish the truth. Again, the millions of dollars embezzled are the people’s money and our people have every right to know the fate of these millions.

It is really sad that the PA government which doesn’t stop boasting about “law and order” has done next to nothing to recover the embezzled money.

There are two main reasons contributing to this shameful inaction on the part of the Palestinian justice system. First, it is likely that some figures within the PA government are themselves implicated in corruption dating back to Arafat’s era. After all, the corrupt cannot investigate the corrupt, as the popular saying goes.

Second, it is even more likely that these silent “witnesses” are worried that should they speak out, their lives would be in danger from the big thieves and their agents and accomplices.

Well, this is a sad fact which really caricatures the pathetic state of affair under the Palestinian Authority. After all, a bad beginning makes a bad ending.

A final word about Arafat. Today, the current PA leadership, which openly conspired with the Americans, and probably with the Israelis as well, against the late Palestinian leader is now singing the praises of Yasser Arafat.

Needless to say, this is an ultimate expression of hypocrisy and dishonesty. And the Palestinian people must not be fooled by these hypocrites.
A truck was used to pull down the concrete slabs making up the wall, an organizer said.

Early reports said the demonstration was planned by the “popular committees” local groups organized to oppose the construction of the wall.

Last Friday, protesters in the village of Ni’lin also managed to tear down a section of the wall. Residents of the village, like those in many towns along the route of the wall, participate in weekly demonstrations against the barrier and the associated annexation of their land.

Intended to be 709 kilometers in length, Israel had completed 413 kilometers of the wall by June 2009, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The barrier, in reality a network of walls, fences, watchtowers and checkpoints, snakes through the interior of the West Bank, looping around Israeli settlements and fragmenting Palestinian communities.

The International Court of Justice ruled that the wall is illegal under international law in 2004. Israel maintains the barrier is for its security.

But a letter received from the “Israeli-German association of Munich”, claiming that Pappe’s lecture would turn into “an anti-Israeli propaganda show,” led the Munich Municipality to reconsider the event.

The municipality eventually did not let Pappe use the room, claiming its decision was prompted by fears of violent clashes breaking out in the area. The Munich police insisted that there was no danger of fear for the security of those attending the lecture.

The Munich mayor refused to comment on the issue despite appeals from German media outlets. Pappe’s associates eventually organized a room not owned by the authorities and the lecture took place as planned.

“We are not seeking to criticize Israel, only to hold an informative-scientists discussion,” one of the associates said.

Prof. Pappe wrote an open letter to the mayor, stating that “in the 1930s my father, a German Jew, was silenced in a similar manner, and I am saddened to discover the same censorship in 2009.”

Pappe noted in his letter that he had not experienced oppression or such a strong desire to silence his opinion in any other European country. He said that “a handful of people” attempted to frighten the mayor, “people who view themselves as representatives of the Jewish people and the disaster they went through in Europe.”

‘Words don’t kill’

Germany’s left-wing party, green party and the ATTAC organization, which is against globalization, came to Pappe’s defense and criticized the mayor for giving in to the Jewish organization.

The green party referred to the mayor’s move as “an act of political cowardice.” The local branch of Die Linke (the left-wing party) said that although sensitivity must be shown in terms of Jewish interests in Germany, “the attempt to defend Israel against criticism by preventing information from reaching people is unthinkable.”

Pappe told Ynet about his bad feelings following the incident. “The lecture was held in a different place in Germany, not where it was initially supposed to take place, in a room owned by the municipality. I was surprised by the fact that the municipality was the one to invite me and that a letter sent by some people, and I have no idea if they included Israelis or not, led to a last-minute cancellation,” he said.

According to the professor, “It’s very strange that a lecture should be prevented due to fear of criticism against Israel. This is the reason, it’s obvious to everyone, but why cancel? Words don’t kill, but rather open the mind.

“If they wanted, why didn’t they bring someone from the embassy to present the opposite stand and contradict my remarks? This hasn’t happened to me even in Israel, so it’s even peculiar.”

People danced and waved flags to patriotic songs, blasted at full volume.

Hung about the compound were huge banners emblazoned with pictures of Yasser Arafat in his trademark military fatigues, and his successor, Mahmoud Abbas, in a dark business suit.

But five years after the death of Mr Arafat, Palestinians seem no closer to the dream of an independent state.

In the West Bank, there have been some improvements in the economy and in security.

The northern town of Nablus, previously a stronghold for Palestinian militants, has experienced something of an upturn in recent months. But like the rest of the West Bank, it is still under Israeli occupation.

Israeli forces have removed some of the checkpoints around the town.

Shopkeepers say business is doing better.

And for the first time in more than 20 years, Nablus has a cinema again – complete with fizzy drinks and popcorn.

Its owner, Bashir Shakah, says a whole generation of Nablus teenagers has grown up without being able to see films on the big screen.

The decision to open the cinema was “an act of faith in Nablus”.

Night raids

“Living in a war zone, you can say, it is a challenge for us to open a cinema,” he said. “But we thought it would be a good investment for the city.”

Mr Shakah said the business couldn’t be put on hold while everyone waited for a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“You are living between two choices: either you stay home or you do something with your life. And we decided that even if there is an intifada, we are going to start doing our business.”

Outside the cinema the streets are bustling. Locals say things have become safer over the past year because of the new Palestinian security forces.

But it is an uneasy calm. Night raids on Nablus by Israeli forces are frequent.

For Ameed, a medic, it’s a reminder that the West Bank is still under occupation.

In essence, he believes, things haven’t really changed.

“I don’t believe in peace,” he says. “The Israelis just use the Palestinian forces for their own benefit.”

‘Extremely critical’

There are big questions hanging over the Palestinian leadership in the West Bank.

Mahmoud Abbas recently declared that he did not want to stand for re-election because of the deadlock in the peace process.

Some observers say this could be just a tactic. Mr Abbas has made similar threats in the past, and it is not even clear if the elections, called for January, will take place.

But an adviser to Mr Abbas, Sabri Saidam, says this is an “extremely critical situation” for Mr Abbas and the Palestinian Authority.

“The president is adamant that he is leaving office. The only thing that will change the situation would be an international position to convince Israel that the only way forward is a two-state solution.

“Other than that, I see no reason or justification for the president to go back on his word.”

At twilight in the Old City of Nablus, Abla and Hussein bought freshly cooked fritters and cakes at a small cafe.

A year ago, militants would have been out in the stone alleyways, and most of the shops would have shut before dark.

These days it is the fruit and vegetable stall owners who are out in force.

But Abla says fear is never far away.

“I am afraid for my children, afraid for myself. If you feel afraid in your own home, it is not peace.”

Just my two cents…..

“It is wise to attend to deeds, not rhetoric” – Chomsky …… it would be wise if he made this his mantra.

At one time I was impressed every time Noam Chomsky spoke. Seeing his name on lists endorsing political actions was most encouraging…. but NOT seeing him participate in those actions sort of put a damper on the situation.

In recent days he has been very vocal about the situation in Gaza. He speaks of International Solidarity as a new phenomena in People’s Struggles. Did he never hear of the International Brigades that went to Spain to fight Franco? Did he not hear of the worldwide movement to eliminate apartheid in South Africa? Does he think Cuba could have survived as a free nation all these years without the support of International Support Groups?

Chomsky overlooks the movements of Palestinians within Gaza and the Occupied West Bank. He gives the impression that without his endorsements, nothing will change. So typical of so many ‘ivory tower’ dwellers. The problem with these people is that their views of reality are often obstructed and they never really see the entire picture of a situation.

The struggle of the Gazans, and all other struggles of people throughout the world need more than endorsements. They need action, they need your ‘body on line’. People often ask me to define the word zionist….. I often say that a zionist is a person, not living in Israel, that writes a TAX DEDUCTIBLE check to the Jewish National Fund every year. Perhaps that definition oversimplifies such a vile movement, but even there you see a large ‘movement’ of talkers, not doers.

We in the People’s Movements cannot afford talk…. to quote from Chomsky himself, “It is wise to attend to deeds, not rhetoric”.

You can read about the Free Gaza Movement HERE. See where you can fit in…. we need YOU, not your endorsement.

The following is a recent interview with Noam Chomsky, the interview that soured me as far as he is concerned….. I usually refrain from this type of post, but the dilettantes of the ‘left’ are really getting to me.

Yesterday I wrote a piece about the control AIPAC has over US foreign policy. But, I did not go into other particulars as to why the US House of Representatives voted against the Goldstone Report.

After speaking to one of my Associates over at Uruknet, the following ideas surfaced…

First of all, US war crimes are far worse than the Israeli ones….. this is an indisputable FACT.

1,400 Gazans were brutally murdered by Israeli forces in the Gaza War….(mostly civilians).

In the War in Iraq, to date over 1, 300,000 Iraqis have been killed…. and continue to be killed on a daily basis.

The US continues to kill innocent civilians, INCLUDING CHILDREN, in Afghanistan and Pakistan. These are ongoing holocausts that remain uncondemned by the United Nations. There has not been, nor will there most likely ever be a Goldstone type report dealing with the war crimes committed by the US and NATO.

There has been much vocal support for the Goldstone Report from pro-Palestinian and anti-zionist groups. Anti-war groups and intellectuals have added their voices of support for the passing of the Report…. but nowhere has there been a call for the same type of investigation to be held dealing with the war crimes committed by the United States…. NOWHERE! This silence allows the crimes to continue, while only exposing and condemning Israel’s crimes, the US is literally getting away scott free with the ones they commit.

The civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan are under constant threat. They too must be protected against the most powerful war machine in the world….. until then, the US will continue to condone lesser crimes as a matter of conscience….. A GUILTY ONE!

Thanks to Paola Pisi, of Uruknet, for collaborating on this piece with me.

There seems to be a perfect conformity between Gabi Ashkenazi and his last name. The Israeli chief of staff is considered one of the main Israeli war criminals responsible for the virtual genocide against the Gaza Strip during the past winter. On his murderous hands, he carries tons of innocent blood, including that of more than 340 children, killed in Israel’s pornographic bombing of civilian neighborhood.

Last week, Ashkenazi was quoted as saying that Israel was likely to wage another quasi holocaust on Gaza, adding that the Israeli occupation army would enter the innermost corners and streets of the coastal territory.

As a nefarious mass murderer, Ashkenazi, like the rest of Israeli war criminals, ought to be in the Hague preparing his defense against charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. After all the crimes he perpetrated put him on equal footing with Nazi war criminals who had stood trial for their own crimes against humanity during the Second World War.

However, because of the serious moral imbalance afflicting our world today, which finds a brazen expression in western complicity with Zio-Nazism, Ashkenazi and ilk are not only free but are even threatening their victims with a fresh holocaust.

In a certain sense, Ashkenazi’s arrogant behavior falls within the normal order of things. The totally inappropriate reaction by the international community to the Nazi-like blitz against the unprotected Gazans must have further emboldened Israeli leaders, convincing them that Israel can always have a free season on the 1.5 million helpless, blockaded and thoroughly starved inhabitants of the coastal enclave without having to worry about any serious ramifications and repercussions.

Hence his repulsive statements.

It is true that many free-minded political and moral leaders, such as the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, have strongly condemned Israeli barbarianism in Gaza .

It is also true that the Goldstone report, prepared by South African Judge Richard Goldstone, denounced Israel for perpetrating war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Gaza blitz, which is a positive development.

However, it is also true that war criminals pay little attention to verbal condemnations even if coming from prominent international bodies and figures.

This is why Askenazi’s remarks ought to be taken with utmost seriousness for two main reasons: First because the Israeli army, or Zionist Wehrmacht, is capable of committing the unthinkable, including the carpet bombing of civilian areas, using cluster bombs, as happened over Lebanon in the summer of 2006, or white phosphorus as happened in Gaza last winter. And second, because Israel is essentially a rebellious state which has never taken international law seriously. What is even more scandalous is that western countries, especially the United States, have always treated the Judeo-Nazi entity as above international law.

Hence, it is imperative that the Palestinian people play their cards very carefully and smartly. After all, when wrestling with a huge bull, one has to rely on his brain, not his muscles, otherwise one may end up getting crushed by the mighty beast.

Palestinians ought to be always mindful of this fact because their very survival as a people depends to a large extent on the good will of the international community, not their own military or political strength. After all, most Palestinians are effectively prisoners of the enduring Israeli military occupation.

Hence, the Palestinian must seek to recruit the best minds and most gifted spokespersons to raise the awareness of the peoples of the world about the creeping holocaust Israel is trying to wreak on our helpless people.

We must not flinch from invoking the holocaust lest we be accused of making hyperboles. Indeed, if even one tenth of what happened in Gaza earlier this year had happened to Israeli Jews, Israel would have invoked the holocaust nonstop, and urgent calls from around the world would have been made for saving the Jews and preventing the Arabs from completing what Adolph had started nearly seventy years ago.

More to the point, the idea of Israel carrying out a sort of a holocaust is not unthinkable at all.

Last year, the Israeli deputy defense minister Mattan Vilna’ai warned that Israel would launch a holocaust against the Palestinians if that was what the Palestinians wanted. And during the blitzkrieg on Gaza, the psychotic Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman was quoted by the Israeli media as saying that a nuclear bomb ought to be dropped on Gaza.

Hence, Palestinian fears are not and shouldn’t be viewed as phobic and irrational. After all, we are dealing with an irrational state and a morbid society that are overwhelmed with a unique type of collective psychosis.

Never the less, raising our voices is not sufficient. We must also seek to enlist the attention and support of international human rights organizations as much as possible. These are credible witnesses whose testimonies might be proven crucial for safeguarding the rights of our people, the dead as well as the living.

We must also gather and meticulously document every conceivable piece of information pertaining to Zionist crimes and criminals, from the ordinary soldier in the field to the highest-ranking commander. This shouldn’t be a difficult job as there is already a huge amount of information pertaining to Israeli war criminals available, even through the internet.

Furthermore, Palestinians and their supporters should always confront states all over the world with information indicting Israeli military and political leaders. We should seek to narrow their horizons, make the capitals of the world off-limit to them, we should pursue them wherever they go. These people are war criminals and child killers must not be allowed to have any shred of peace of mind . Their murderous crimes must condemn them to a life of existential anxiety, stress and depression.

Of course, the Zio-Nazis will not surrender and allow themselves to be easily defeated by our efforts. Moreover, manifestly immoral governments such as those of the US and Germany, to name just a few, will hasten to support Israel and shield it from any proactive measures that would make the Zionist regime feel the heat and understand that the occupation has a cost that must be paid in full.

But we and our allies could counter this true axis of evil by building a worldwide front comprising millions of free and honest men and women who would chase the war criminals wherever they go and expose their evil deeds.

Luckily, we already have such a movement in place. But we need to get more organized, and be more effective. These goals are not difficult to realize as the world is already fed up with Israel, a state that we must never stop comparing with Nazi Germany because in the final analysis when Zionist Jews think, behave and act like the Nazis of the past century, they become Nazis.

We must never be apologetic about this.

Abdullah Abu Rahma, leader of the People’s Campaign to Fight the Wall, said: “Today we commemorate 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

“This is the beginning of the activities, which we do, to express our hold on our land, and our refusal to this wall – the wall of torture, the wall of humiliation.”

Activists have vowed to hold a week of protests in the Palestinian territories and around the world, including a campaign calling for the release of all anti-wall activists currently imprisoned.

Last Friday, Palestinian youths almost toppled a segment of wall using a hydraulic car-jack in the West Bank village of Nilin.

Regular protests

Protests against the wall have become a regular event in Nilin and in the nearby village of Bilin, where Palestinian, international and Israeli activists are commonly confronted by tear gas and rubber bullets fired by Israeli troops.

Israel began building its barrier, consisting of fences and walls, in 2002, citing security reasons.

The wall is up to 8m high in places, twice the height of the former Berlin wall. Palestinian sources anticipate that it may be more than 750km-long when construction is finished, more than four times the length of the Berlin wall.

Palestinians say the route of the wall has been set in such a way that it grabs land that could have been included in a future Palestinian state.

The International Court of Justice, in a non-binding decision in 2004, said the Israeli-built barrier was illegal and should be taken down because it crossed into occupied territory.

A report by Stop the Wall, a Palestinian coalition of NGOs opposed to the wall, said that in 2007 alone, Israel demolished more than 160 houses and appropriated more than 3sq km of land in the Palestinian West Bank in its construction of the wall.
