Earlier in the week, visiting U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called for a ‘Two State Solution’ to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. She made her statements when addressing the conference on Gaza held at the Egyptian border town of Sharma Sheikh.
All fine and good….. I personally have no problem with the ‘Two State Solution’, but I have a BIG problem with her meeting with Abbas and recognising him as the leader of the Palestinian people. It is Abbas that chose to leave his position as President when he pulled out of the coalition he shared with Hamas. It is Abbas, in collaboration with the State of Israel that is responsible for Gaza to be cut off from the rest of Palestine. It is Abbas that is responsible for the suffering endured by the million and a half Palestinians living in Gaza. Through his continued support and collaboration with the zionist regime, it is he that must take the blame for this suffering as much as the Israeli government.
Yet, despite all of the above, Ms. Clinton met with him yesterday as if he truly is a concerned ‘leader’ looking out for the genuine interests of his people. Nothing is further from the truth. Abbas is a traitor! Still, the visiting Secretary, chose to discuss this matter with him rather than with the elected leader Ismael Haniyeh.
Until/unless the new American Administration recognises the FACT that it was Hamas that was elected to represent the people of Palestine…. not just the people in Gaza, but those living in the Occupied West Bank as well…. nothing will change. A ‘Two State Solution’ with Abbas leading one of those states will be no different than the situation we have today, a situation where Israel will be the actual governing body of the Palestinian State.
For Ms. Clinton to even consider such a move is nothing more than diplomatic hypocrisy, nothing less. Coming from a country where the government she represents was democratically elected, she should have some inkling as to what the word Democracy means. It certainly does NOT mean Occupation or dominance by a foreign power.
Hopefully President Obama will be more open to the actual facts regarding the Palestinian leadership.
