ISRAEL RESPONDS TO THE PHOTOS THEY DIDN’T WANT YOU TO SEE

In response the Israeli military spokesperson’s unit said the images ”serve as clear and unequivocal proof of Israel’s repeated arguments that aboard [the Mavi Marmara] were mercenaries who intended to kill Israeli soldiers.”

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz judged that in the photos, “Israeli soldiers are seen beaten and bleeding, being carried below deck by Turkish activists.”

Did Mavi Marmara passengers aid injured Israelis?

Previously unseen pictures emerged on Sunday that apparently contradict Israel’s official account of its raid last week on a Turkish ship carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

Israeli commandos killed nine Turkish civilians when they commandeered the Turkish vessel Mavi Marmara at dawn last Monday. The Israeli government said its forces only fired at the passengers when they attacked soldiers using iron bars, kitchen knives and other makeshift weapons. Other witnesses said the soldiers were already shooting when they approached the ship.

Published by the Turkish daily Hurriyet on Sunday, one set pictures apparently show Mavi Marmara passengers protecting and administering medical aid to injured Israeli soldiers. In one image, a Turkish volunteer wraps his arm around the shoulder of an Israeli commando in fatigues and raises his other arm to stop a photographer from taking pictures.

Palestinian intellectual Ali Abunimah disagreed, writing, “The photos indicate nothing of the sort; if anything they show the opposite. First, it is clear that the passengers would have had ample time and opportunity to seriously harm or kill the Israeli soldiers if that had been their intention.”

It was unclear how the pictures emerged, since Israeli authorities confiscated most if not all of the video and photographic material taken by passengers and journalists on board the ships. For close to three days last week, Israel enjoyed a near monopoly on recounting the events of the raid, while the 700 passengers from the flotilla were held in detention centers.
