For Lebanese residents, street trash becomes a symbol for government cleanup

Think back a few months to a dark time in Lebanon this July, when a sanitation worker strike led to literal piles of trash throughout the capital Beirut.

But for thousands of Lebanese protesters who took to the streets of downtown Beirut Saturday, the trash crisis is only the most obvious sign of an ineffective government wrought with corruption and in need of change.

Though the stinky saga lasted only a week until sanitation workers resumed pick up, Beirut residents are still dealing with its after-effects over a month later, a slow response they say stems from a government body that’s as stale as the situation itself.

What transcended was the most violent demonstration Lebanon’s seen in years. Some 75 protesters were injured when police responded with water cannons, rubber bullets and teargas, according to the Daily Star, while some witnesses even reported live fire. Meanwhile, security forces said some 35 of its members were also injured, but rights groups say this is a gross exaggeration. Human Rights Watch condemned what it deemed excessive force on the part of the government, saying it ‘failed to uphold human rights standards’ during an otherwise peaceful demonstation.

The action on the ground were backed online by the worldwide trending hashtag #طلعت_ريحتكم (#You_Stink) on Twitter. By Sunday, an English equivalent had taken form.

Whether this foreshadows a larger political change isn’t clear yet, but it does show that after months of stink in the streets and — according to some — in government offices, Beirut’s not quiet.

Here’s some of the Twitter responses below.

RECENT VIDEOS ~~ A GLIMPSE AT WHAT IS HAPPENING IN PALESTINE TODAY

Nabi Saleh on Friday saw a remarkable confrontation when an Israeli
occupation soldier tried to kidnap a child (with arm in cast after an
earlier attack on him ended up with a broken arm) but his family came to
his aid and freed him. Watch these remarkable videos:

This is not the first time family members stick together. Ahed and her
younger brother challenged Israeli soldiers who kidnapped their older
brother earlier (the other older girl is cousin Marah Tamimi)

The Tamimi children of course are like any other children interested in
living their lives on their land and having access to their water spring
things denied to them by a brutal colonial racist occupation. HERE ARE THE
CHILDREN helping us in studying nature and biodiversity in their beautiful

STAY HUMAN

JEREMY CORBYN ~~ MENTCH* EXTRAORDINAIRE

*mentch

noun

  1. (literally) A human or person.
  2. A person with integrity and concern for others.
  3. A gentleman.

Etymology: Yiddish (mentsh), an honorable person, from German Mensch (person).

Jeremy Corbyn, MP.

Jeremy Corbyn, MP.

When a bunch of neo-Nazis and antisemites threatened to march in Golders Green a few months ago, a wide campaign was organised to stop them with a counter-demonstration.  Only one of the current candidates for the Labour Party leadership sent a message of support to the counter-demonstrators.

Jeremy Corbyn, MP.

Yet this same Jeremy Corbyn has been the target of an ugly smear campaign attempting to brand him an enemy of Jewish people, by means of contrived “association” with antisemites. As Corbyn moved from outsider to a favourite to win,  addressing huge rallies of supporters, one Jewish newspaper even claimed Jews in Britain “feared” what might happen if he became leader of the Labour Party.

“Jews for Jeremy” was launched as a Facebook group by Ian Saville, primarily in response to the smear campaign, in order to counter the lies, spread awareness, and provide a rallying point for Jewish people who refuse to be regimented by such artificial “fear”.

Members have agreed the following statement –

A group of several hundred members of the British Jewish community has launched Jews for Jeremy, a group to support Jeremy Corbyn’s campaign for leadership of the Labour Party.

Some members of the group live in Jeremy Corbyn’s constituency, some have worked with him on various campaigns, and many know him from his reputation and his tireless work for the disadvantaged in society, including migrants and asylum seekers, over the past 32 years. They are convinced that his policies are the right ones for the Labour Party to pursue both domestically and internationally at this time.

The Conservative government is implementing harsh austerity measures that are harming the British economy and the lives of British people. Members of Jews for Jeremy believe that Jeremy Corbyn’s policies would be more likely to bring both fairness and prosperity. Jeremy Corbyn’s economic plans have been endorsed by more than forty leading economists in a letter to the Observer this week, and members of the group believe they are sound, fair and realistic. They believe, as do many economists and commentators, that they will resonate with the British people, and that they will be popular with the electorate. They are impressed by Jeremy Corbyn’s pledge to bring more democracy to the Labour Party, and to seek to bring in candidates for office from a wider range of backgrounds. They note that Jeremy Corbyn was the only leadership candidate to respond in full to questions from the environmental charity Friends of the Earth, with an environmental policy which is progressive and responsible.

In international relations, the group asserts that Jeremy Corbyn’s policies offer the best hope for peaceful resolution of conflicts both in the Middle East and the rest of the world. Members applaud his efforts to bring together opposing parties to many conflicts in dialogue in a constructive way, and are dismayed that in some cases this has been held against him. The group notes that even Tony Blair and the Israeli government have very recently engaged in such dialogue, and it is unfortunate that it was not begun much earlier.

Crucially, as Jews, members of the group are alarmed that some unscrupulous sections of the media have sought to label Jeremy Corbyn as an antisemite, or a knowing associate and supporter of antisemites. Those who know Jeremy Corbyn and have worked with him believe that this is an absurd charge. Jeremy Corbyn has a long history of principled anti-racism, and has a close and amiable relationship with the Jewish community in his constituency. He has long had friendly contact with Jewish organisations throughout the UK and abroad. Members of Jews for Jeremy believe that these accusations are a cynical attempt to damage Jeremy Corbyn’s campaign, and do not think they amount to legitimate political criticism or debate.

The group appeals both to Jews who are Labour members or supporters and to those who support Jeremy Corbyn from outside Labour to join with them. For those who quite legitimately support other candidates, or are critical of left politics in general, members of the group are happy to debate or argue in a respectful and friendly manner, but hope to dispense with the smears which have characterised some of the debate so far.

Migrant crisis: up to 200 dead after boat carrying refugees sinks off Libya

There was a meeting in a church in Harlem organized by people who are opposing police murders and the whole system of mass incarceration (a/k/a the New Jim Crow) which has Black men and women spending decades in prison for non-violent drug offenses (brought about by the Rockefeller drug laws and mandatory sentencing).  And with the prisons privately run and them making contracts with many industries where prison labor is a source of slave labor, they find ways of keeping people in prison.  A very sick outrageous situation.  Of course a disproportionate people in the prisons are black because the police are concentrated in their communities and because they don’t have $ for big name lawyers.

Anyway, many ministers spoke and people from the communities that are fighting against all this.  And then the families of young people who were murdered by the police came on stage – a lot of them – and one by one told their stories.  An act of heroism which reminded me of the stories we heard from Palestinian parents.  They told their stories in grief and in rage.  One grandmother tried but just couldn’t speak, she couldn’t stop crying.  Her 7 year old grandaughter was lying on the couch next to her when the police busted in looking for someone, threw in a stun grenade into the apartment hitting the child in the head and  blowing her brains all over her grandmother.  It was a mistake, they were in the wrong place, but never issued an apology.  And this keeps happening even though these murders are getting more attention.  These murderers don’t even feel like they better lay low for awhile because they are now in the public eye.  They don’t care and maybe they think that the public doesn’t care.  Perhaps they are right.  So far this year 700 people, mostly unarmed, have been killed by the police.  What makes them think they have been hired to be executioners?  The comparison to what is happening to Palestinian families is inescapeable – the same killings with impunity, the same non-caring attitude from the populace, the same torment for the families.

The last speaker, Cornel West, noted the tie between what is happening in Palestine and in this country.  He delivered a monologue while walking quickly around the stage and as he noted all the problems, the racism, the militarism, the failure of capitalism, the U.S. being a dying empire, he spoke as if he was reciting a brilliant poem full of rhyme and rhythm.  It was a dazzling, magnificent jazz piece that left us both informed and mesmerized.

THE UNION MAKES BDS STRONG!

UE Becomes First National U.S. Union to Endorse BDS

The resolution also endorses the worldwide BDS movement – Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions – to pressure Israel to end its apartheid over the Palestinians just as similar tactics helped to end South African apartheid in the 1980s. UE is now the first U.S. national union to endorse BDS.

UE, the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers, held its national convention in Baltimore August 16-20.

Delegates acted on 37 resolutions on collective bargaining, organizing, and political issues, and they upheld UE’s long tradition of courageous stands on foreign policy issues when they adopted the resolution on Palestine and Israel. It points to Israel’s long history of violating the human rights of the Palestinians, starting with the ethnic cleansing of 750,000 Palestinians in 1947-48 that turned most of Palestine into the State of Israel. It calls for cutting off U.S. aid to Israel, U.S. support for a peace settlement on the basis of self-determination for Palestinians and the right to return.

Five delegates spoke from the floor in support of the resolution. Angaza Laughinghouse of Local 150, composed of public workers in North Carolina, said, “Our government is on the wrong side, We have to stand on the right side of the Palestinian struggle.” Autumn Martinez of Local 255 in Vermont said she had met Palestinian trade unionists at the World Social Forum in Tunisia and learned from them of conditions in the occupied territories. “It’s absolutely disgusting what is going on. Free Palestine!”

The convention also adopted a resolution on numerous military and foreign policy issues from an independent labor perspective. “For Peace, Jobs and a Pro-Worker Foreign Policy” endorses the work of U.S. Labor Against the War (USLAW); calls for reducing the military budget while improving the pay and benefits of military personnel and veterans and converting to peaceful uses of resources now devoted to the military; demands the end of U.S. military intervention in the Middle East and other regions; calls for negotiation to resolve the Ukraine crisis; supports Zenroren’s call for demilitarization in Japan; and supports the agreement to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

“The labor movement needs to have its own independent foreign policy,” said Carl Rosen, UE Western Region president. Several delegates talked about how they had been inspired by meeting members of Zenroren, the Japanese labor federation, 200 of whom came to New York City in late April to march for nuclear disarmament, with two smaller groups then joining UE members in New Haven and Chicago for May Day events. Brandon Dutton from Local 1161 in Wisconsin said, “We have done enough damage. We need to get out of the Middle East.”

UE’s convention included outreach and involvement in local struggles in Baltimore. On Tuesday of convention week, delegates joined local labor and human rights activists in a march to city hall to rally for Black Lives Matter, the Fight for 15, and several local workers struggles, including the contract fight of UNITE HERE members at the Baltimore Hilton where UE delegates were meeting. The march was led by members of UE’s two Baltimore locals. UE delegates also leafleted workers at an Amazon warehouse about organizing.

Two of UE’s national officers did not seek relection at this year’s convention. President Bruce Klipple and Director of Organization Bob Kingsley will be retiring at the end of October. Delegates elected Peter Knowlton, president of the union’s Northeast Region, as the new national president, and Gene Elk, a veteran organizer and bargaining representative, as the new director of organization. Secretary-Treasurer Andrew Dinkelaker was reelected.

UE, founded in 1936, was the largest of the “left-led” unions in the CIO, but CIO leaders turned on UE and other progressive affiliates in the late 1940s as they sought “respectability” andand enlisted in the Cold War. UE was heavily persecuted by the government and employers and raided by “mainstream” unions throughout the 1950s and into the ‘60s. But the union never abandoned its principles, and even through the worst period of “red scare” attacks, UE waged trail-blazing campaigns for workplace equality for African American and women workers.

In 1964, UE became the first national union to oppose the Vietnam War, and it was in the forefront of labor opposition to Reagan’s Central America wars in the 1980s, Clinton’s Yugoslav War in the ‘90s, and Bush and Obama’s wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and beyond. Since the 1950s UE has consistently supported disarmament and called for reduced military spending, with its long-serving late President Albert Fitzgerald frequently telling union members, “You can’t have both guns and butter.”

JUSTICE AND PEACE FOR THE PEOPLES OF PALESTINE AND ISRAEL – UE Convention Resolution

In 1988, delegates to the UE 53rd Convention adopted the resolution “Time for a Just Settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.” In it they said, “The occupation by Israel of the West Bank and other Arab lands since 1967 has blocked the exercise of Palestinian national rights and resulted in ongoing violations of human, social, political, economic and particularly trade union rights of Palestinians…” The resolution said the U.S. government had “contributed to the continued conflict by its one-sided support for Israel and its failure to take into account the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people,” and it called for the U.S. government to recognize the Palestine Liberation Organization and for the creation of a Palestinian state.
For more than 25 years the U.S. has engaged in a so-called “peace process” with Israeli and Palestinian representatives. But the U.S. role has remained extremely one-sided. The U.S. provides Israel $3 billion a year in aid and repeatedly uses its UN veto to shield Israel from criticism of its human rights abuses. The Palestinians are worse off. In the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, Israel continues to confiscate homes and land to expand Israeli settlements which violate international law. Since 1967 Israel has settled more than 500,000 of its citizens in the West Bank, and has been building a wall that separates neighboring towns and cuts off farmers from their fields. Many prominent human rights activists including former President Jimmy Carter and South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu have called the system of Israeli rule over Palestinian people “apartheid.”

In Gaza, 1.8 million Palestinians are crowded into a tiny enclave under continuous military and economic blockade. In the summer of 2014 Israel waged a merciless war on the impoverished population of Gaza. More than 2,000 Palestinians were killed.  The vast majority were civilians, including more than 500 children; and the physical destruction was overwhelming. UE’s officers issued a statement expressing our union’s alarm and over 300 Holocaust survivors and descendants signed a full-page newspaper ad, that condemned the Israeli attack as genocide and declared, “never again must mean never again for anyone.” Yet incredibly, the U.S. Senate voted unanimously at the time to endorse Israel’s actions.

The source of the conflict goes back to the origins of the State of Israel. The population was overwhelmingly Palestinian Arab (Muslim and Christian) before 1947-48, when well-armed Zionist militias seized most of the territory of Palestine and expelled 750,000 people from their cities, villages and farms. They executed much of the Palestinian leadership and declared the founding of the State of Israel. As a result millions of Palestinians are refugees both in the occupied territories and in other countries. Israel prohibits their return to their homes.

In recent years racism and extremism in Israel has grown more severe. One-fifth of Israeli citizens are Palestinians who survived ethnic cleansing. Some members of parliament, including cabinet members in Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu’s government, call for stripping their citizenship and expelling them. Some also call for expelling all Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza and annexing them to Israel. The “peace process”, supposedly aimed at negotiating the terms of Palestinian statehood in those territories, has been dead at least since March when Netanyahu, in his reelection campaign, declared he would never accept a Palestinian state.

In July 2005 Palestinian trade unions and hundreds of Palestinian civil society organizations called for a worldwide campaign of boycotts to pressure Israel to end its apartheid over the Palestinians. This has developed into a global movement called Boycott, Disinvestment, Sanctions. BDS was modeled after the 1980s international solidarity campaign that put economic pressure on South Africa’s government which helped end apartheid.

The summer 2014 Israeli attack on Gaza increased worldwide support for BDS. UE Local 150 endorsed BDS. The largest union in Britain, UNITE, endorsed BDS in July 2014. UAW Local 2865, which represents 13,000 graduate employees of the University of California, also endorsed BDS last year. COSATU, the Congress of South African Trade Unions that helped defeat apartheid in that country, is a strong backer of BDS. Many progressive Jewish organizations and individuals, in the U.S., Israel and elsewhere actively support BDS as a way to bring about peace and justice for the people of Israel and Palestine.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THIS 74th UE CONVENTION:

1. Calls on Congress and the Administration to end all U.S. military aid to Israel; and to pressure Israel to end the occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem and the siege of Gaza and negotiate a peace agreement on the basis of equality, democracy, and human rights for the Palestinian and Israeli people, including Palestinian self determination and the right of return for refugees.

2. Endorses the BDS movement and urges the union at all levels to become engaged in BDS and the movement for peace, justice and equality between the Palestinians and Israelis.

August 26th 2015, one year after the brutal Israeli massacre in Gaza, Jewish Voice For Peace  organized a memorial march through New York City from  West 77th St. to Columbus Circle. 200+ people participated in the memorial. As the they marched with signs and banners they  boldly called out  “Free Gaza”, “End the occupation” and “Not another nickel, not another dime, no more money for Israel’s crimes”. The group entered Columbus Circle in silence to honor the thousands murdered and injured in the attack which included children.

ARAB SUPPORT IS KEY TO PALESTINE’S LIBERATION

We Palestinians don’t expect miracles from the Arabs. We don’t expect them to liberate Palestine from the River to the Sea. We don’t even expect them to liberate al-Quds Ash-sharif and al-Masjidul Aqsa from the clutches of Zionism.

However, there are certain tasks the Arabs could easily do to enable our people to survive and be steadfast as we have done since the Nakba 67 years ago.

Rich Arab states, such as the Gulf States and Saudi Arabia, can and should allow more Palestinians to seek employment opportunities in their respective countries. The Palestinians are skilled, educated and can be trusted to perform their duties without endangering the internal security of these states.

Palestinians need support to remain steadfast

By Khalid Amayreh in Occupied Palestine

Nothing could help the Palestinian cause more than enabling ordinary Palestinians to put up a resilient steadfastness in the face of a sinister Zionist strategy aimed at uprooting the national existence of the Palestinian people from their ancestral homeland.

Yes, steadfastness is the name of the game in Palestine, especially in light of the virtual liquidation by Israel of any remaining realistic prospects for the establishment of a viable Palestinian state.

Steadfastness is therefore the crux of the matter in Occupied Palestine because without it, Israel would be able in a matter of few years or decades to drive many or most Palestinians into a permanent exile.

Needless to say, the Jewish state has failed to achieve this criminal goal not because it refrained from employing the most nefarious means imaginable to “get the job done,” but rather because Palestinians consistently showed an extraordinary level of endurance and steadfastness in the face of Zionist-Jewish oppression, which in many cases transcended reality.

Hence, the same level of steadfastness and resilience that enabled the Palestinian people to survive all these years, despite the enormity of Zionist repression, must be maintained and consolidated rather constantly.

Easier said than done

But withstanding Israeli oppression and maintaining the required level of steadfastness have certain requirements which must be met and maintained.

Otherwise steadfastness, and therefore national survival, would remain confined to the theoretical or even rhetorical sphere.

Yes, the unwavering will to remain steadfast in the face of Israeli brutality is an almost built-in character among most Palestinians. Indeed, many would say Palestinians are innately steadfast and inherently resilient, irrespective of Israeli brutality and terror.

None the less, even this legendary “innate steadfastness” cannot always be taken for granted. That is why effective measures ought to be taken to maintain, enhance, and even maximize the Palestinian ability to remain steadfast as well as shield this steadfastness from unrelenting Israeli measures intended to extinguish every Palestinian light and kill every glimmer of hope amongst a people that has survived in spite of history.

What are the Palestinians’ needs?

Palestinians are Sunni Muslims and wouldn’t be duped or used by sectarian regional powers to undermine the security of the Gulf States.

On the contrary, Palestinians could be utilized to safeguard the security of the Gulf and Saudi Arabia and they would happily agree to contribute to the consolidation of that security.

At the end of the day, the Palestinian national cause would eventually benefit from the stability and security of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states.

And certainly the opposite is also true.

Besides helping Palestinian find employment opportunities, either inside Palestine or in the region, oil-rich Arab states should help subsidize college education in the occupied territories. We all know, for example, that college tuitions constitute a huge financial burden for many Palestinian families which are often forced to exhaust their savings and assets to send their children to college.

Indeed, there are many painful stories about Palestinian college-age students who have been forced to work at Jewish settlements because their poor families couldn’t afford to send them to college.

We must not hide this embarrassing fact from our rich Arab and Muslim brothers because in the final analysis, the consequences of poverty often override national commitment.

Moreover, helping poor college students in the West Bank and Gaza Strip get undergraduate education doesn’t mean a huge financial burden for oil-rich Arab states.

In fact, a modest sum of 20-30 million US dollars per year would resolve the entire problem of college education in occupied Palestine. More to the point, it would allow the young Palestinian generations to remain in their ancestral homeland, thus scoring a definitive historical victory over Zionism.

I realize that there are voices unenthusiastic about invoking anything Palestinian these days.

But such voices are likely to be plagued with ignorance, maliciousness, ill will or moral and religious bankruptcy.

I say this because the Palestinian issue remains and will always remain the core national and Islamic problem for Arabs and Muslims everywhere. It is the mother of all problems, par excellence.

In fact, the Palestinian issue is too paramount to be marginalized, or left to “others” who would exploit it for their own sectarian ends.

In the final analysis, Arab states (and peoples) would succeed in everything else if they succeeded in carrying out their duties and commitments toward the Palestinian cause but would fail in everything else if they failed in shouldering their duties toward the Palestinian cause.

Indeed, sixty-seven years of official Arab failure should be more than enough to indict the Arab regimes.

#OperationSaveTheCatsOfGaza

Yesterday I posted about the wonderful lives dogs enjoy in Israel as compared to the lives of Palestinians …

Today there is a report of how 2 kittens were rescued from the war zone in Gaza last summer amidst the carnage of over 550 murdered innocent children.

Palestinian children killed in Israeli shelling, Gaza Strip. Their names are unknown, unlike the 2 kittens described below

Tzuk and Eitan were rescued from the fighting zone in the Strip during Operation Protective Edge by an IDF soldier, who is now the protagonist of a new optimistic and colorful book for children.

New children’s book tells story of kittens rescued from Gaza

Meet the kittens Tzuk and Eitan, who were born in Gaza, found a home in Israel after Operation Protective Edge (“Tzuk Eitan” in Hebrew) and are now starring in a new children’s book.

The cats, one white and the other ginger, were rescued from the fighting zone by one IDF soldier during Protective Edge. Their story has now been made into a children’s book written by Nurit Sternberg.

The soldier who rescued the cats, Matan Meshi, who is studying industrial engineering at the Ben-Gurion University, is the main protagonist of the book, titled “Tzuk and Eitan Find a Loving Home.”

Meshi, a fighter in the Ground Forces, was called for reserve duty at the beginning of Operation Protective Edge, and along with his friends went into the Gaza Strip for a series of missions in built-up areas in the central Gaza Strip.

“All of a sudden, a weak yowling was heard, and then another very weak, shaky yowling, and then a third. ‘What is there in the corner?’ Matan called with wonder. Two pairs of eyes sparkled in the darkness. Matan shone his light at the whispering, bustling corner, and then another weakling meow was heard. Matan saw two skinny, gaunt cats, and he felt sorry for the hungry and abandoned kittens.”

Matan fed the cats with food from his battles rations and gave them some water.

The ginger and white kittens spent three days with the fighters, who became attached to them and decided to bring them back to Israel in a cardboard box.

Illustration from the book: Matan and his friends taking the kittens to Israel (Photo: Gadi Kabalo)

Once out of Gaza, the fighters got to Doron Elbaz’s refreshment station at the entrance to Moshav Maslul. Their next mission was to find the kittens a loving home.

Elbaz spread the story and the kittens were soon adopted by Kristina, a young woman from Tel Aviv. They have been living with her since.

And so the book describes it: “With a heavy bag on his back and his weapon on his shoulder, Matan marched with his friends along their journey, while the white and ginger cats were closed up in a cardboard box.”

Elbaz spread the story and the kittens were soon adopted by Kristina, a young woman from Tel Aviv. They have been living with her since.

Author Nurit Sternberg from Moshav Sde Warburg, who is a friend of Matan’s mother, decided to write a children’s book about the operation and the kittens’ adoption. Despite the fact the book takes place in war time, she wrote an optimistic and colorful book which makes for a light reading.

“I found the story really touching. It opens up a window into what went on in the soldiers’ hearts, and how they did not lose their compassion and gentleness despite the difficult operation,” Sternberg said.

Israel issues demolition order for mosque in East Jerusalem

JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — Israeli municipality officials delivered a demolition order Friday to the al-Qaaqaa Mosque, a house, and a studio apartment in the Silwan neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem, local sources told Ma’an.

Majdi al-Abbasi, from the Wadi Hilweh Information Center in Silwan, said that Israeli municipality members delivered a demolition order to the al-Qaaqaa mosque in the Ein al-Luza area of the neighborhood.

The mosque, built three years ago, is a 110 square meter space that serves 5,000 worshipers.

Al-Abbasi added that the Israeli municipality also delivered a demolition order to a studio apartment and its facilities. The studio belongs to Iyad al-Abbasi and was built 12 years ago.

A demolition order was also delivered to a home housing six people.Earlier this week an Israeli court ruled to demolish a football field and its facilities in Silwan, a local committee said.

The ruling includes the demolition of a 1.5 dunam (.4 acre) sports field as well as a neighboring warehouse and animal shed.Silwan is one of many Palestinian neighborhoods in occupied East Jerusalem that is seeing an influx of Israeli settlers at the cost of the demolition of Palestinian homes and eviction of Palestinian families.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DOGS AND ARABS IN ISRAEL

The dogs ….

The idea that Israelis are particularly fond of dogs is one that the government itself is keen to promote as part of its effort to make Israel more appealing to Western audiences.

That was precisely the theme of a recent Israeli foreign ministry propaganda video promoting Tel Aviv as a “city of dog lovers.”

This 5-minute video produced by Adalah in 2013 provides background on the struggle of the villagers to stay in their homes:

Dogs treated better than Palestinian Bedouins in Israel

Ali Abunimah

“In the Naqab (Negev), dogs can check into a very fancy animal hotel while in the nearby Arab Bedouin village of Atir Umm al-Hiran, people are not so privileged.”

This animation contrasts the luxury dogs can enjoy at the Goldog pet hotel with the deprivation in the adjacent Bedouin village that is slated for demolition by Israeli authorities.

At the hotel, dogs get 12 square meters (130 square feet) of space each and custom meals. There is also a pet cemetery where animals are given individual grave sites and memorials.

The video was produced by 7amleh (pronounced “hamleh” – Arabic for “campaign”) as part the ongoing#‎Save_UmAlHiran campaign by Palestinian civil society groups to halt the destruction of the village.

Demolition

In May, after years of litigation, the Israeli high court ruled that Umm al-Hiran could be demolished to make way for a Jewish town.

In the Naqab (Negev) region of southern present-day Israel, tens of thousands of Palestinian Bedouins live inunrecognized villages and are denied basic services such as electricity, water and education, among others.

Adalah, a legal advocacy group for Palestinian citizens of Israel, notes that the court “recognized that the residents were not illegal trespassers – as initially claimed by the state – but were moved there in 1956 by Israeli military order, after being displaced from their original village of Khirbet Zubaleh.”

Nevertheless, the Israeli court ruled that because they were on so-called “state land,” the government could “retake it and do with it as they wished.”

“The court did not ask why the new town had to replace the Arab village, when there were vast and empty lands in the surrounding area,” Adalah adds. “The Court also ignored the Bedouin residents’ political, social and historical roots to the land.”

Israel has already begun laying the infrastructure for the Jewish town, which is to be called Hiran.

An estimated 1.7 million Palestinians carry Israeli citizenship and live in cities, towns and villages across the country.

According to Adalah, they suffer from more than 50 discriminatory laws that stifle their political expression and limit their access to resources, including land.

“City of dog lovers”

The idea that Israelis are particularly fond of dogs is one that the government itself is keen to promote as part of its effort to make Israel more appealing to Western audiences.

That was precisely the theme of a recent Israeli foreign ministry propaganda video promoting Tel Aviv as a “city of dog lovers.”

OPRAH JUMPS ON THE ANTI BDS BANDWAGON

After a BDS attempt to ban Jewish-American reggae singer Matisyahu from the Rototom Sunsplash festival, it has become known that media mogul Oprah Winfrey also turned away a BDS request earlier this month.

Executives at the Oprah Winfrey magazine refused to receive activists who wanted her to reject Israeli diamonds.

Denying the Israel-basher — kudos to Oprah and other principled stars

For years, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement has worked to make Israel an international pariah. Happily, it’s started seeing some serious pushback.

In Spain, Jewish-American reggae singer Matisyahu did indeed perform Saturday at the Rototom Sunsplash festival. The organizers re-invited him after they’d canceled — a disinvitation pushed by the BDS crew, which had insisted he endorse Palestinian statehood.

An international uproar forced the festival’s hand — after all, organizers (and BDSers) hadn’t insisted on a litmus test for any non-Jewish performers.

No less than Oprah Winfrey stood up to the thugs, too. A BDS “delegation” showed up at her magazine’s New York offices this month, carrying a letter urging Oprah to publicly reject Israeli jeweler Lev Leviev’s products.

The star had worn Leviev diamonds on the cover of O magazine’s May issue, the 15th anniversary edition. But the BDSniks smear Leviev with charges of stealing Palestinian land and committing human-rights abuses in Angola.

Neither Oprah nor her executives would even meet with the agitators. They even refused to accept the letter.

In October, New Jersey’s second-favorite native sons, Bon Jovi, will end their current tour in Tel Aviv — rejecting BDS pressure to cancel the concerts after the dates were announced in the spring.

Support for Israel even popped up in Paris this month. Mayor Anne Hidalgo dedicated an artificial beach to Tel Aviv — despite intense opposition from the BDS movement and its sympathizers in the French media.

Across the globe, too many in media, the arts and politics are happy to go with the flow and pile on Israel. It’s refreshing to see stars — especially American ones — standing up to the bullies by taking truly principled stands.

Bottom line is ….. BOYCOTT OPRAH!

IT IS NOT ANTI-SEMITIC TO BOYCOTT MATESYAHU

Yesterday I asked some questions regarding the called-for boycott of Matesyahu ….

Why was Matesyahu singled out from all of the scheduled performers to make the statement supporting Palestine?

Is it possible that there were/are some anti-Semitic elements in the Valencia BDS Movement??

If Matesyahu was singled out because he was the only Jew on the roster,

IT WAS WRONG!

If there are anti-Semitic elements in the Movement,

THAT IS WRONG AS WELL!!

Ali Abunimah answers those questions AT

It is not anti-Semitic to boycott Matisyahu

In recent days, anti-Palestinian organizations have been crowing over the disinvitation of Matthew Paul Miller, an American Jewish singer who uses the stage name Matisyahu, from the Rototom Sunsplash music festival in Valencia, Spain.

Amid cries of anti-Semitism from the Anti-Defamation League and the World Jewish Congress and condemnation by the government of Spain, the incident has become the latest stick with which to beat the Palestinian-led movement of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS).

“The festival organizers contacted me because they were getting pressure from the BDS movement,” Millerwrote on his Facebook page on 17 August. “They wanted me to write a letter, or make a video, stating my positions on Zionism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to pacify the BDS people.”

“My music speaks for itself, and I do not insert politics into my music,” he claimed.

Miller suggested that he was being singled out solely because he is Jewish: “Honestly it was appalling and offensive, that as the one publicly Jewish-American artist scheduled for the festival they were trying to coerce me into political statements.”

Under a storm of pressure, the festival organizers relented, apologized to Miller and reinvited him to perform next Saturday.

Miller’s support for Israel

But was Miller really targeted just because he was Jewish?

Or was it because of his long, public record of supporting in word and by deed Israel’s violations of Palestinian rights?

BDS País Valencià have explained in a statement why they contacted the festival: “The reasons for our outrage was clear in our messaging: Matisyahu’s repeated defense of Israeli war crimes and gross violations of human rights, incitement to racial hatred and connections to extremist and violent fundamentalist groups in Israel stand in direct contradiction to the human rights and peace principles and spirit of this festival.”

Their goal was to hold the festival accountable to its stated goal of supporting “peace, equality, human rights and social justice.”

A native New Yorker, Miller has certainly never needed to be coerced to declare that “I’m a strong supporter of Israel.” But he has gone far beyond that.

He has headlined fundraisers for Friends of the IDF, a group that raises money for and glorifies the Israeli army of occupation. His work has also been used in official Israeli propaganda videos.

In April, he performed at the policy conference of AIPAC, the most powerful Israel lobby group in the US.

The same month he also performed at a pro-Israel festival in New Orleans, organized by Chloe Valdary, the Christian Zionist rising star of US pro-Israel activism.

Valdary’s Allies of Israel group, which sponsored the festival, has been funded by the extreme anti-Palestinian organization CAMERA, according to Times of Israel.

Backed flotilla attack

Miller was vocal in his support for Israel’s attack on the Gaza-bound flotilla in May 2010, which killed 10 people aboard the Mavi Marmara.

“Whether or not the ships should have been bringing aid to Gaza, those territorial waters belong to Israel – it’s internationally agreed,” he claimed in an interview with The Jewish Chronicle.

“Do you honestly believe that, if someone was in the English Channel, the British navy would do anything but blow the crap out of the boat, just blow it out of the water?” he added. “But still people are going to think Israel behaved horribly.”

“No other country,” Miller asserted “would put up with the crap that Israel does.”

Palestine didn’t exist

This wasn’t the only occasion Miller has used the platform he’s received as a musician to promote his anti-Palestinian views.

In a 2012 interview with The Cornell Sun, he promoted the position, popular among Zionist extremists, that Palestinians and their country are a recent invention.

“As far as I understand, there was never a country called Palestine,” he said. “Palestine was a creation that was created within Israel, as Israel had already come about.”

“Palestine” is in fact the only name for the land between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River that has historically been used by both Zionists and Palestinians.

Miller’s claim moreover that Palestine was “created within Israel” after “Israel had already come about” amounts to Nakba denial – the erasure from history of the 1948 ethnic cleansing of Palestinians by Zionist militias.

Miller is at least consistent. In 2011, he tweeted out a notorious video called “The Truth about the West Bank” featuring then Israeli deputy foreign minister Danny Ayalon denying that the territory is occupied and justifying Israel’s settlements that are illegal under international law.

Is Miller boycottable?

Let us be clear that if the only reason Miller had been asked to state a position on Palestine was that he was Jewish that would indeed be discriminatory and unacceptable.

It is, however, Zionists and anti-Semites who insist that being Jewish and being Zionist are synonymous. This is a position long rejected by many Jews and of course by the Palestinian-led BDS movement.

The vast majority of artists addressed by BDS campaigns in recent years have been neither Jewish nor Israeli.

Nor are any of the firms that are most often the targets of divestment campaigns – such as Veolia, Hewlett-Packard, Boeing, Motorola, G4S, or Caterpillar – Israeli.

This is because BDS is not a campaign against Israelis as such, but against Israel’s violations of Palestinian rights and complicity in those violations.

Just because Miller is Jewish does not mean he cannot be held accountable for his high-profile support for Israeli policies against Palestinians.

“Anchored in precepts of international law and universal human rights, the BDS movement, including PACBI, rejects on principle boycotts of individuals based on their identity (such as citizenship, race, gender, or religion) or opinion,” the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel states in its guidelines.

PACBI says that its boycott aims not at individuals but at complicit institutions.

But, it adds, “an individual artist/writer, Israeli or otherwise, cannot be exempt from being subject to ‘common sense’ boycotts (beyond the scope of the PACBI institutional boycott criteria) that conscientious citizens around the world may call for in response to what they widely perceive as egregious individual complicity in, responsibility for, or advocacy of violations of international law (such as war crimes or other grave human rights violations), racial violence, or racial slurs.”

The same would apply to any non-Israeli, whether they are Jewish or not.

Conscience

It then comes down to a matter of conscience and judgment as to whether Miller’s vocal support for Israeli war crimes, his fundraising for the Israeli army, his performances for AIPAC and other anti-Palestinian organizations amount to “egregious individual complicity.”

The guidelines issued by PACBI are important, but they are not laws and Palestinians don’t have the power to enforce them.

Groups, in this case BDS País Valencià and others in Spain, must follow their consciences. Palestinians ask them to act in an ethical, consistent and anti-racist manner.

Based on my reading of the PACBI guidelines and Miller’s public politics it is difficult to see why asking him to state a clear position against Israeli violations of Palestinian rights is in any way unreasonable.

This is a conclusion that can be reached not only by supporters of BDS, but also those on record opposing cultural boycott, such as Daniel Sieradski, the prominent American Jewish blogger who used to have Miller as a web-design client.

“Matisyahu [Miller] wasn’t targeted because he’s Jewish. He was targeted because he’s a prominent pro-Israel figure who has publicly supported the IDF [Israeli army] and denied Palestinian identity,” Sieradski observes. “Every time he opens up his mouth about Palestine, he shoves his foot into it by spouting off some hasbara [propaganda] nonsense, and then reels it back and says, ‘But really I’m not political.’”

Sieradski reveals more about Miller’s background: “His spiritual mentor, Ephraim Rosenstein, to whom he attributes his spiritual regrounding, lives in occupied Hebron, praised Baruch Goldstein after the Tomb of the Patriarchs massacre and raises money for an organization that provides legal aid to Israeli extremists charged with murdering Palestinians.”

Sieradski also recounts a troubling story from New York City’s Beatbox Festival a few years ago when Miller allegedly pulled out the amp cord on another performer because he deemed his message to be “pro-Arab.”

Charles Manekin, an orthodox Jewish studies and philosophy professor who blogs with the pen name Jeremiah Haber, points out the inconsistencies of those crying anti-Semitism over the short-lived boycott of Miller.

“When Israeli cultural groups are boycotted simply because they come from Israel, regardless of their political views, BDS is attacked for being anti-Semitic,” he writes. “When pro-Israel artists are boycotted because of their views, BDS is anti-Semitic.”

“Had Matisyahu, who has made political statements in the past in favor of Israel, endorsed a Palestinian state, or justice for the Palestinians, he would not have been cancelled, even with the protest of the Spanish BDS group,” Manekin writes. “But an artist who has politicized his work should not be surprised if he is called out on it.”

I wholeheartedly agree.

BDS MUST ADMIT ITS MISTAKES

For the past ten years the International BDS Movement has been the most vocal and respected Movement against the occupation of Palestine.

It has grown rapidly, especially in the Jewish sectors on US campuses. Its fight for Justice has caused alarm in zionist circles and has been the target of anti-Semitic charges by Israel itself, all of which are unjustifed and untrue.

Attempts by the Israeli government to blackmail the BDS leadership have failed and will continue to do so. Instead, victory after victory have been celebrated throughout the world as BDS wins battle after battle.

Last week the organisors of a Reggae Festival in Valencia cancelled an invitation to a Jewish American because of his refusal to publicly support the creation of a Palestinian State. The decision was made after the Valencia BDS Movement put pressure on the group. It was a decision that was applauded worldwide including on this Blog itself.

Only after the Spanish government itself protested this move was the decision reversed and Mattesyahu did perform at the Festival.

I must ask a few questions regarding this entire matter;

Why was Mattesyahu singled out from all of the scheduled performers to make the statement supporting Palestine?

Is it possible that there were/are some anti-Semitic elements in the Valencia BDS Movement??

If Mattesyahu was singled out because he was the only Jew on the roster,

IT WAS WRONG!

If there are anti-Semitic elements in the Movement,

THAT IS WRONG AS WELL!!

If the BDS Movement realises its mistake, they must admit it. We cannot afford to lose any of our growing support, not at the expense of ending the occupation!!!

Here is how solidarity demos are treated in Israel …

This video shows Israeli police and right-wing extremists violently attacking and assaulting Palestinians who had gathered outside the hospital where a Palestinian hunger striker is gravely ill.

Flag-waving Israeli extremists sing songs celebrating and calling for the slaughter of Palestinians, especially children.

The events occurred on Sunday, when hundreds of Palestinians and supporters protested in Askalan (Ashkelon) in the south of present-day Israel in solidarity with Muhammad Allan, the Palestinian who has been on hunger strike for two months against his “administrative detention” – without charge or trial – by Israel.

As Allan struggled for his life, his supporters arrived aboard buses from Jerusalem, Jaffa and the north to hold a vigil outside Barzilai Medical Center where he is being treated and detained.

“Allan come and see, your people are supporting you openly,” the supporters call out in the video before they are attacked.

An Israeli police officer shouts through a megaphone: “This is an illegal gathering.”

Police assault protestors, dragging them away and confiscating Palestinian flags, and use a water cannon and pepper spray.

Genocidal songs

Haneen Zoabi, a Palestinian member of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, who tries to intervene to prevent the police violence, says: “The police are beating people, young women and men.”

At the same time, extreme right-wing Israeli Jews can be seen assaulting protestors without police intervention and indeed with police protection.

“Zoabi, you are whore! You are a terrorist,” one of the right-wing demonstrators shouts at her. The mob then starts to chant “Zoabi is a terrorist! Death to terrorists!”

Many openly declare support for Meir Kahane, the founder of the violent anti-Palestinian organization Kach.

They chant anti-Arab slogans including a song celebrating the mass killing of children in Gaza: “Why is there no studying in Gaza? Because there are no children left there.”

“Gaza is a cemetery,” they sing, and “Death to reporters!”

These same genocidal songs were heard on Israel’s streets during last summer’s 51-day assault on Gaza that killed more than 2,200 Palestinians, including 551 children.

Assaults and arrests

The extremists have been present at the hospital for a week, assaulting visitors and supporters of Allan.

“They don’t even let us gather in one place to demonstrate, to send a political message that we support Muhammad Allan,” Zoabi observes of the police ban. “A conqueror acts like a conquerer, so the oppressed need to act like the oppressed.”

Eight activists were arrested, at least four of whom required hospital treatment due to injuries from police violence, according to the photography collective ActiveStills, which produced the above video.

Allan, a 33-year-old lawyer from the occupied West Bank village of Einabus, recently fell into a coma for four days. On Tuesday he regained consciousness and, still gravely ill, vowed to continue his hunger strike until Israel frees him.

Hamas Catches Dolphin ‘Spying for Israel’

First sharks, then ducks – now dolphins? Dastardly Zionists apparently recruiting dolphins to spy on Hamas in Gaza.
Caught in the act: Zionist spy exposed.Thinkstock

Caught in the act: Zionist spy exposed.Thinkstock

Hamas authorities in Gaza claim to have captured an Israeli “spy dolphin” off the coast of Gaza Wednesday.

Yes, a spy dolphin.

Sources in Gaza say the dolphin in question was wearing cameras and other equipment, and was captured by Hamas’s “military wing,” the Ezzedine al-Qassan Brigades, according to IDF Radio.

Dolphins are believed to be highly intelligent – but this would be the first time a dolphin has been accused of acting as a secret agent.

It is not known which Israeli intelligence agency said dolphin is accused of working for.

This is not the first such bizarre claim by a Muslim group or country of animals being “recruited” to conduct acts of espionage on behalf of Israel.

Usually the accusations are the result of authorities mistaking tracking devices placed on animals by scientists – to track information like migrationpatterns or the movements of endangered species for example – for sophisticated “spy equipment.” Often, the mere presence of Hebrew writing on a device is seen as “proof” of a Mossad connection.

Sharks, ducks, vultures, eagles, and even rare European Bee-Eaters, have all been “exposed” at some point as dastardly Zionist agents.

Now, it appears, the dolphins are in on it too.
