BDS pressure cancels Matisyahu concert

Valencia’s Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement requested that Rototom, the 22nd European Reggae Festival scheduled for 15-22 August in Benicàssim, cancel Matisyahu’s planned performance, stating that the Jewish-American rapper has “participated in pro-Zionist festivals and has said that Palestine does not exist”.

Matisyahu is known for blending Orthodox Jewish themes with reggae, rock and hip hop beatboxing sounds.

Rototom asked Mattisyahu to publicly state whether there is a right to a Palestinian state and whether he rejects Israeli military violence, particularly that during Israel’s summer 2014 attack on the Gaza Strip.

“After having repeatedly sought dialogue (with Mattisyahu), the artist was unavailable to speak out clearly against the war and the Palestinians’ right to a state of their own. Accordingly, the Mattisyahu concert scheduled fot 22 August was cancelled.

In a statement, Rototom noted that it has “proven countless times (its) sensitivity to Palestine, its people and the occupation, particularly by holding multiple debates in the World Social Forum.” It further deplores the attacks against it following this announcement, noting that it has a 22 year history of “active promotion of peace, social justice and human rights.”

BDS Valencia stated that the success of this campaign is a “cry of popular solidarity.”

BDS is the most effective way peace and solidarity activists, both Jewish and non-Jewish, can use to pressure Israel to respect the human rights of the Palestinian people and the Palestinians’ right to self-determination. American Jews, and Jews all over the world, including those in Israel, must not be afraid to criticize Israel. BDS!!!

Right on, BDS Valencia! According to an interview I read featuring Matis-yahu, he grew up as a member of the orthodox Chabad Lubavitch cult which, following the Talmud, openly advocates both the enslavement and extermination of ALL human beings who are not “Jews.” Of course, I have been boycotting Matis-yahu all along, if only because his rip-off music (invented by Black people) totally sucks. If I want to listen to reggae music, I’ll listen to Burning Spear. Just as liberal lemming idiots are banning confederate flags because of some racist connections, so we should similarly ban the racist apartheid flag of the illegitimate and illegal country called “Israel,” along with the artists that support its murderous policies.

Right on Robert Villanova! Except that Matisyahu grew up secular. He was briefly affiliated with Chabad when he became religious and then floated to different Jewish groups before shaving off his beard 3 years ago and leaving Orthodox Judaism entirely. That having been said, I have never heard a Chabad Rabbi advocating for the extermination and enslavement of all non-Jews. If you have a reputable source or link for that then by all means, share it! And I totally get what you said about ripping off music invented by blacks. The same applies to rock and roll which was invented by black people and then expropriated by “artists” like Elvis Presley. Musical genres should belong only to those who invented them. Music should not ever be used to transcend race or national origins or anything. Just like white people should not rap, Black people shouldn’t polka! Yeah!
