CELEBRATING THE DISPLACEMENT

There is no empathy at all for the last victims of the Holocaust, the Palestinians

The renegaded victims of the Christian-Zionist jubilee celebrations

by Evelyn Hecht-Galinski,English Translation by Milena Rampoldi

Greetings for the 70th anniversary of the “Jewish State”, based on the displacement of 750.000 Palestinians from their homeland in 1948, during the Nakba (catastrophe). All famous politicians celebrate this anniversary of the foundation of the “Jewish State”. Nobody says one word about the Nakba, the catastrophe which supported by us in the West caused the occupation of Palestinians living imprisoned without any rights. One-thousand famous politicians and “Friends of Israel”, from Steinmeier to Maas, did not renounce to their celebration, while the renegaded victims, the Palestinians, had to “stay outside alone”. (1)

There is no empathy at all for the last victims of the Holocaust, the Palestinians

German Chancellor Merkel and foreign minister Maas fall over themselves with declarations of friendship and gratulations. What is particularly questionable is the fact that Merkel in an interview for the Israeli channel Ten explicitly talks to people of “Jewish origin” or Jews in Germany by offering them the guarantee to do all for their safety. The fact that synagogues, schools, kindergarten and Jewish institutions must be guarded worries her a lot. (2) There is no empathy for the last victims of the Holocaust, the Palestinians, during these Christian-Zionist joyful celebrations.

However, two positive signals came from Merkel. Before her journey to Trump she engaged for the maintenance of the nuclear deal with Iran, criticised by Trump and Netanyahu, by saying: “In our opinion having an agreement is better than having no agreement at all.” In addition, Germany will not follow the USA and relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem., as long as the status of Jerusalem will not be definitively clarified.

Why does Merkel not give her welcoming speech at the 70thanniversary of the foundation of the “Jewish State” to the Jüdische Allgemeine, the “storming organ” of the Central Council of German Jews? Why not to the Israel ambassador? However, when it is about Turkey, Ditib is criticised as the religious organ linked to Turkish Government. This argument does not apply to the Central Council as corporation under public law, when it constantly acts as German representative of the “Jewish State” in Germany. Here horrifying double standards are created because there is no equal treatment of Jewish and non-Jewish organisations. It is enough with the “particular” relationship to the “Jewish State” and the German citizens of Jewish faith. Exactly this unequal treatment causes prejudices resulting in Anti-Semitism. However, this is exactly what the Netanyahu regime wants to continue to commit its crimes unpunished and without being criticised.

Almost as an aside, Merkel criticises the construction of settlements by the Jewish State because it would not simplify the Two-State-Solution. According to Merkel, Germany wants the “Jewish Democratic State” of Israel next to a “viable” Palestinian State. And this is so implausible as all her politics is.

However, in one and the same sentence of her welcoming speech, Chancellor Merkel adds “that knowing the responsibility and bearing in mind our common values, we will shape our future for mutual benefit”.

How can this “Christian-Zionist” chancellor so uncritically celebrate the anniversary of the foundation of the Jewish State in “joy and thankfulness” because the Jewish State reached out its hands for reconciliation, without referring back to the missing “reconciliation” with the Palestinians? Again, the Palestinians are not an issue. And it was also not an issue during the “reconciliation visit” of “Auschwitz Minister” Maas in Israel. This autumn, Merkel is planning to visit the Jewish State with her cabinet. It is easy to imagine how this visit will look like and which results will be achieved: more armaments and U-boat gifts for the purpose of “self-defence”.

Israel’s objective: the final solution at the expense of the Palestinians

How can we talk about common values with a “Jewish occupiers’ and Apartheid State”, a state without constitution, without clear borders and aiming at the complete implementation of the final solution of the Zionist reason of state at the expense of the Palestinians.

Merkel also moans about “new types of Antisemitism” by refugees or people of “Arabic origin”. In reality, the Chancellor should know very well that these people are not motivated by Antisemitism, but by the absolutely understandable rage against the crimes of the Netanyahu regime. These crimes climaxed again at the Gazan border where thousands of Palestinians started their “March of Return” which will continue until the Nakba commemoration day on 15 May.

This “March of Return” is a pleading call for help addressed to the international public not to forget the Palestinians and their legal right to return. The result up to now: dozens of people assassinated, including children and a press photographer, Jasser Murtaja, wearing the jacket with the inscription “Press”, and who according to war minister Lieberman was working with a drone and became a safety risk. His version was not even confirmed by the army.

Murtaja was an independent reporter who worked for the production company Ain-Media which was even financially supported by the US agency USAID. All is checked with extreme precision. He had nothing to do with Hamas, but was engaged for truthful reporting. He will enter the history of the Palestinian history as “martyr of truth”.

Merkel did not even comment the massacre in Gaza by the Netanyahu’ state terrorism regime. As always, she just focussed on the proper “right for defence”.

Reason of State: support of the illegal Jewish occupation of Palestine

Of course, we have to ask ourselves the following question: What will Merkel do for Palestine, if she massively and unconditionally supports the disrespectful politics of the “Jewish State” with arms and U boat supplies by following the Merkel formula of the German reason of state for the security of the “Jewish State”. However, this “security” means the support of the illegal Jewish occupation of Palestine.

Since March 2010, the commemoration of this catastrophe in the “Jewish State” has been made punishable. What began with the so called “Nakba” law and continued with the “Anti-boycott” law, the “muzzle” law for the media and many other fascist laws, has only one goal of silencing and hiding the truth. However, the truth cannot be hidden for ever, even if Zionists do not fear anything more than the truth.

We should all fear a “Jewish State” led by politicians like Netanyahu who use the seventy hour of “independence celebrations” to express this threat: the “Jewish State” has become an “emerging world power” whose light will defeat the “darkness” of its enemies. “In another 70 years, you’ll find here a country that is 70 times stronger, because what we’ve done until today is just the beginning!”

We saw this “Jewish Occupiers’ State” celebrating this anniversary with the wings of “David Star” air force flying over the illegally occupied Palestine. Also two nuclear weapons-capable  U boats and corvettes, the planes F15 and F16 and the recently purchased stealth aircraft F35 participated to this horrifying and enormous power demonstration in Tel Aviv (greetings from Merkel!). Combat aircraft and transport planes from Canada, Italy, Great Britain, Greek, Poland, and Austria were also involved in this “Zionist peace message”.

Oppose to war, oppression, and perpetual occupation!

When Netanyahu thanked President Trump again for his historical decision to recognise “Jerusalem as our capital” and for the relocation of the most powerful country of the world to Jerusalem, one got a foretaste on what the future will bring: war, oppression, and perpetual occupation.

This emerging world power is a threat to world peace. Too bad that Günter Grass cannot be there today to write another poem for these “celebrations”.

This Wednesday in Berlin and other German cities a big rally of the “Christian-Zionist” hypocrites will be organised based on the slogan „Berlin trägt Kippa“ (Berlin wearing kippa). We should change this mendacious fake rally based on defamations to a symbolic action based on the slogan “Berlin wearing hijab” to oppose to Islam and foreigners’ hatred and to struggle for the freedom of Palestine. (3)

The renegaded victims of the Christian-Zionist joyful celebrations must not be left alone. We should give them our voice. We should claim for the existence right of a free Palestinian State as German reason of state, because 70 years occupation of Palestine have been more than enough.

And we commemorate the Nakba and celebrate the prospects for a free Palestine, “From the River to the Sea”.

A MESSAGE TO THE FRIENDS OF THE IDF

With ‘friends’ like these, do you really need enemies?

Israeli soldiers cheer after shooting Palestinian protester in the West Bank

Two weeks after Israel’s military opened a probe into soldiers who cheered on the shooting of an unarmed Palestinian protester in Gaza, a second video has emerged depicting a similar incident in the West Bank where soldiers applauded the targeting of a demonstrator and took delight in seeing journalists exposed to tear gas.

At around 2:00 P.M. on Friday afternoon, 13 April 2018, some thirty residents of the Palestinian village of Madama tried to remove a roadblock the Israeli military had placed at the eastern entrance to the village. About eleven soldiers then arrived on the scene. In the clashes that ensued, residents threw stones at the soldiers from a distance of 50-80 meters, and the soldiers fired stun grenades and rubber-coated metal bullets at the villagers. Seven residents sustained injuries from the rubber-coated metal bullets the soldiers fired: two were taken to a hospital in Nablus for medical treatment, and the other five were treated on the spot. Joyfully cheering about shooting a person trying to clear the access road to his home and calmly discussing other ways to hit him and the other people with him are part of the discordant soundtrack accompanying 51 years of occupation.

It is now  posted  on Vimeo.

Check out this stirring anthem to freedom in Gaza. It begins with a Palestinian child saying “We shall overcome” and an image of Martin Luther King Jr. and then in many still pictures of the “Great March of Return” conveys the strength of the unarmed resistance to the blockade–including the killing of Yaser Murtaja, the Palestinian journalist who was one of six Palestinian journalists shot by Israeli snipers on April 6.

KUDOS TO TWITTER

Twitter temporarily suspended the account of Deputy Knesset Speaker Bezalel Smotrich after he posted on the weekend that a Palestinian teenager who slapped an Israeli soldier should have been shot in the kneecap.

“In my opinion, she deserved a bullet, at the very least to the kneecap. That would put her under house arrest for the rest of her life,” Smotrich said.

They are calling her the ‘fearless girl’.

Jewish Home MK says jailed Palestinian teen ‘deserved a bullet’ in the kneecap

Bezalel Smotrich says he is ‘very sad’ Ahed Tamimi is only in an Israeli jail and wasn’t maimed by the soldiers she slapped

Jewish Home lawmaker Bezalel Smotrich on Sunday said he was “very sad” that a Palestinian teen protester who was filmed slapping Israeli soldiers was jailed and not shot, saying Ahed Tamimi deserved a bullet to the kneecap, “at the very least.”

Responding to a tweet from ex-Jewish Home MK Yinon Magal, Smotrich lamented that IDF troops did not maim the 17-year-old in the December 2017 incident.

“I am actually very sad that she is under arrest, Yinon,” Smotrich tweeted at Magal, who had expressed satisfaction Tamimi was still behind bars four months after her arrest.

“In my opinion, she deserved a bullet, at the very least to the kneecap. That would put her under house arrest for the rest of her life,” Smotrich said.

Smotrich has a history of making controversial remarks, including encouraging draft-dodging in protest of the IDF’s “radical feminist” agenda; comparing the evacuation of an illegal settlement outpost to a “brutal rape,” and claiming that “illiterate” Arabs are granted university admission thanks to affirmative action.

He has also called himself a “proud homophobe,” and was involved in organizing an anti-gay “Beast Parade” in Jerusalem, in response to the city’s annual Gay Pride parade.

Tamimi is currently serving an eight-month prison term — the result of a plea deal — for slapping and kicking two Israeli soldiers outside her West Bank home in mid-December.

Under the terms of the deal, Tamimi confessed to aggravated assault of an IDF soldier, incitement to violence and disrupting soldiers on two other occasions. The 17-year-old was also filmed encouraging attacks against Israelis, including stabbing attacks.

In her version of the incident, Tamimi told a military court in the West Bank, the same soldiers featured in the video had shot her cousin in the head with a rubber bullet an hour prior to the filmed encounter.

Tamimi’s arrest and prosecution by Israel has garnered international attention. It has also touched on broader issues, such as the detention of Palestinian minors by Israeli — currently 356 — and the debate on what constitutes legitimate resistance to Israel’s rule over millions of Palestinians.

Earlier this month, the IDF said the Justice Ministry was investigating a video released by Tamimi’s family that shows an Israeli interrogator threatening the teen with the arrest of her relatives if she refused to cooperate.

The interrogator, who at times moved within centimeters of the Tamimi’s face, also commented on the teen’s body, fair skin, and “eyes of an angel.”

WEEK 4 OF THE GREAT MARCH IN GAZA ~~ ON VIDEO

Nice overview of the Great Return March in Gaza

Palestinians continue their 4th week of protest at the Israeli border with Gaza. Four people were killed.

ISRAEL’S RIGHT CONTINUES ITS FIGHT AGAINST AHED TAMIMI VIA ‘NEW’ VIDEO

New it’s NOT ….. but here it is

Pretty pathetic I must say

Here’s the reason behind Ahed’s actions…

Here’s what the ‘wrongful right’ sees as new ….

Another Ahed Tamimi violence video revealed

Tamimi seen in video attacking soldiers and Border Police officers with fists and kicks.

The Ad Kann organization published a new video in which terrorist Ahed Tamimi is again documented attacking soldiers during operational activity less than a year ago in Nabi Salah.

At the beginning of the video Tamimi appears blocking a border police officer’s field of vision while he was taking aim from a prone position, and then attacking Border Policemen and IDF soldiers with pushes, fists, and kicks.

About two weeks after the documented incident, Ad Kann filed a complaint with Binyamin police against Tamimi demanding a criminal investigation: “In the video you can see Tamimi attacking Border Police and IDF soldiers again and again without the security forces stopping her, so she grew bolder and began to attack with fists and even kicks,” the complaint states.

“Tamimi’s criminal actions are getting worse, and the time has come to act on this matter. Therefore, we ask you to order the necessary measures against Tamimi and other persons involved.”

A plea bargain was recently signed according to which Tamimi would be sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment and fined NIS 5,000. After the deal, Ad Kann sent a request to the Military Advocate General to cancel the plea bargain.

“We were surprised to hear about the lenient plea arrangement that was presented today after contacts between the parties that were conducted in secret,” the organization’s request stated.”This organization has long been operating in radical organizations involved in violent riots and attacks on IDF soldiers. The plea bargain is puzzling and unacceptable, since unequivocal documentation was presented and the evidence speaks for itself.

“The Tamimi family and its supporters interpret enforcement authority indulgence in the wrong way. This was the case when Ahed attacked IDF soldiers over and over without intervention, and so it was in the courtroom, when one of her supporters attacked a military prosecutor in an unprecedented manner.”

Despite this, Ad Kann‘s request to cancel the plea bargain was rejected by the Military Advocate General.

The organization, which in recent years has exposed radical left-wing organizations, has launched a crowd-funding operation at the GiveBack website to continue its activities. “They have the money from Europe – we have you,” says the fundraising page.

Ad Kann Director Gilad Ach said: “For years anarchists and Palestinians who receive funding from them have been physically attacking IDF soldiers while the soldiers’ hands are tied and unable to respond. Beyond the attack itself, these incidents severely impair the IDF’s deterrent capability, the soldier’s morale, and the fighting spirit.

“A year ago, in May 2017, we filed a police complaint about Tamimi’s repeated attacks on IDF soldiers, but unfortunately the enforcement authorities chose to ignore it, which increased motivation among the attackers.

“A plea bargain serves the same trend and will only increase the attacker’s appetite and cause soldiers to deduce they have no backing, especially when all the evidence is clear and there’s no legal need for a plea bargain. The Military Advocate General Office’s response from recent days raises the fear that the State Attorney’s Office is not determined to bring the soldiers’ attackers to justice.”

DYING FOR THE TRUTH IN GAZA …..

Yaser Murtaja was shot and killed while filming the second Great Return March which he was documenting with colleagues at عين ميديا Ain Media. This documentary was in progress before he was killed. He dedicated his life to telling the stories of Palestinians in Gaza. What a huge loss for the world.

Death is not the only thing on Israel’s ‘Final Solution’ …

A picture that you only can see in besieged Gaza/Palestine! Many young Palestinians had their lower limps amputated as a result of sever injuries by Israeli gunfire or shelling.
They challenge their disability with determination and steadfastness.

PSYCHO ATTACK ON JEWISH VOICE FOR PEACE

Our local psycho seems tired of singing praises to the likes of Netanyahu and Trump, so she is now on one of her delusional rants against reality …. This time the Jewish Voice for Peace.

I’m pretty sure that Natalie Portman will be the next one on her list …

Here is some of what Glick had to say …..

TIME TO CUT JVP DOWN TO SIZE

JVP is punching above its weight because the Jewish communal leadership is punching beneath its weight. It is time to correct this imbalance.

Jewish Voice for Peace is a marginal group, by all accounts. The Jewish-run, anti-Zionist organization has perhaps a couple of dozen employees and anywhere between a few dozen and a couple of hundred committed activists in the US. Its positions – that Israel is evil and must be destroyed and that Jews should be disenfranchised and ostracized because they support Israel – is anathema to the overwhelming majority of American Jews.

Yet despite the fact that its bigoted positions are rejected by just about everyone, this group, which the Anti-Defamation League has listed as “the largest and most influential Jewish anti-Zionist organization in the United States,” is becoming increasingly influential in the US.

(Italics are mine)

This is a “little group” ?

As the ADL report on JVP notes, in recent years, the little group has received millions of dollars in donations and has vastly expanded its operations. It has 35 chapters across the US including at several campuses. It has nearly a half million followers on Facebook and 75,000 followers on Twitter.

her response

It is a sign of the confusion within the American Jewish community that JVP’s strategy meets with success not only among the general public, which may not understand how marginal and extreme JVP’s positions are, but within the Jewish community itself.

her ‘final solution’

There are two ways to deal with Jewish Voice for Peace. First, while the Obama administration refused to investigate Students for Justice in Palestine and its parent group’s ties to terrorist groups, the Trump Justice Department and Treasury Department can easily inquire into their pedigree. The federal government can take action against them if, as seems likely, investigators discover operational ties between these groups and illegal terrorist organizations.

Second, the Jewish communal groups need to block JVP activists and sympathizers from gaining positions of power and influence over their local institutions. Among other things, this requires investing in Jewish educators to attract more Jewish Americans to these professions.

JVP is punching above its weight because the Jewish communal leadership is punching beneath its weight. It is time to correct this imbalance.

HOW TO PISS OFF THE FAR RIGHT IN ISRAEL

DesertPeace and Associates congratulates David Grossman on his receipt of the Israel Prize for 2018

While people can think and say what they like, not everyone deserves to be awarded the Israel Prize. It is not surprising when a Leftist writer rages against Israel at every opportunity and speaks disparagingly about Israel’s moral bankruptcy all over the world, but if a Rightest government in Israel  awards and praises him for it, that’s even more tragic.

Anti-Israel Prize

While people can think and say what they like, not everyone deserves to be awarded the Israel Prize.

This year, the Israel Prize for Literature was awarded to David Grossman, one of the heralded novelists of the Left, who has a long reputation for speaking out against the “occupation” of Palestinian land, against the “settlers’ and the “settlements”, and against the ideological decay and dying morality of the Israeli majority.

In the past, after the Gaza War, Grossman demanded an inquiry to investigate the IDF, Tzahal, which led to the infamous anti-Israel Goldstone Report. After the Flotilla Affair, he accused the IDF of acting like a “brigade of pirates.” When Tzahal was sent to clean out terrorist havens in Judea and Samaria, Grossman drove off to assist Palestinians with their olive harvest.

On Memorial Day, as a bereaved father whose son, sadly, was killed in the Second Lebanon War, he spoke in Tel Aviv at a controversial gathering of Arabs and Israelis who had lost children in battle. Among the Arabs were family members of terrorists. The Israel Defense Minister attempted to thwart the event, calling it a blatant affront to the feelings of the country on the Memorial Day for Israel’s fallen soldiers and terror victims, but the Supreme Court insisted that the gathering be allowed.

Here are some excerpts from Grossman’s speech, as reported by the newspaper, Haaretz:

“Finally, we have come home. But when Israel occupies and oppresses another nation, for 51 years, and creates an apartheid reality in the occupied territories — it becomes a lot less of a home.

“And when Minister of Defense Lieberman decides to prevent peace-loving Palestinians from attending a gathering like ours, Israel is less of a home.

“When Israeli snipers kill dozens of Palestinian protesters, most of them civilians — Israel is less of a home.

“And when the Israeli government attempts to improvise questionable deals with Uganda and Rwanda, and is willing to endanger the lives of thousands of asylum seekers and expel them to the unknown — to me, it is less of a home.

“And when the Prime Minister defames and incites against human rights organizations, and when he is looking for ways to enact laws that bypass the High Court of Justice, and when democracy and the courts are constantly challenged, Israel becomes even a little less of a home —for everyone… It is a dysfunctional home.

“The people and organizations who are here today, Especially the Family Forum and Combatants for Peace, and many more like them, are perhaps the ones who contribute most to making Israel a home, in the fullest sense of the word.”

Announcing that Grossman was this year’s recipient, Israel’s Education Minister, Naftali Bennet, declared:

“In his novels, books, essays, documentary writing, in his extensive creations for children, he presented a series of masterpieces that excel in rich imagination, deep wisdom, human sensitivity, a poignant moral stand and a unique and resonant language.”

Bennett defended giving the Israel Prize to a writer known for his opposition to the “settlements” and his support for European boycotts of products produced by the settlers, saying he has no regrets over his decision to award Grossman the acclaimed award.

The Israel Prize committee stated: “Since the early 1980s, David Grossman has taken his place at the center of Israeli culture, and he is one of the most profound, moving and influential voices in our literature… David Grossman is one of the most famous, admired and beloved Israeli writers in the world.”

Grossman is beloved around the world because of his unquestionable literary talent, but does this love also stem from his harsh and never-ending criticism of Israel?

Fortunately, we have the Moskowitz Prize for Zionism, which awards its prizes on a far healthier basis, to builders of the Nation and not to its detractors.

#IsraelAt70 ~~ MOST JEWS QUITE HAPPY OUTSIDE ITS BORDERS

But seven decades on, the language of Israel and Diaspora, of center and periphery, hub and spoke, homeland and exile, no longer describes the lived reality of the majority of the world’s Jews who continue to reside and thrive outside Israel’s contested borders.

Why Many American Jews Are Becoming Indifferent or Even Hostile to Israel
It’s not about what Israel does. It’s about what, to their minds, Israel is.

It’s Time For Israel To Recognize That Diaspora Jews Are Already Home

The State of Israel is 70 years old, well past its early growing pains; it is strong, confident and distinctive. North American Jewry is still here — strong, confident and distinctive in its own fashion. But the relationship between the world’s two largest Jewish communities is growing more and more strained, and, on this milestone anniversary of independence, it is the subject of much hand-wringing over whether and how it can ever be repaired.

So I’m going to offer an alternative idea: Rather than pretend that some sort of global marriage counseling can reconcile two fundamentally different entities, let’s acknowledge and celebrate their separate identities and embark on a new kind of relationship. To begin with, let’s leave behind the outdated notion of “Diaspora.”

I do not suggest that the two parties should divorce, or even amicably separate and go their own ways. After seven decades, Israel has become an essential element of modern Jewish life far beyond Tel Aviv, in Toronto and Tucson and Tashkent; those of us who live outside The Land benefit enormously from its political, social, intellectual, economic and cultural achievements, from its spiritual centering, from its very being there. We turn away from it at our peril, and our detriment.

But seven decades on, the language of Israel and Diaspora, of center and periphery, hub and spoke, homeland and exile, no longer describes the lived reality of the majority of the world’s Jews who continue to reside and thrive outside Israel’s contested borders.

We need a new vocabulary, one that reflects a more egalitarian relationship, something horizontal rather than vertical. While it is true that the negative connotation of “Diaspora” formulated in classic Zionism is fading — with so many Israelis living in Los Angeles and Berlin, how could it not? — there remains an expectation that Israel is the central address for real Jews, and the rest of us live in the outer exurbs.

Dealing with this disequilibrium isn’t a challenge only to Israelis, to view us as more than an open wallet, a font of unquestioning political support and a steady stream of tourist dollars. It’s also a challenge to those North American Jews who over the decades have substituted worship of a mythical Israel — what Donniel Hartman calls “the endangered fairy-tale land” — for real engagement and commitment to our own Judaism at home.

Some Jews in what we call the Diaspora will continue to make aliyah and fulfill the Zionist dream. But most will not, and we need to adjust our expectations of each other accordingly. A more balanced and realistic relationship can strengthen both anchors of 21st-century Jewish life.

The tension over the relationship is, of course, nothing new. Within only a couple of years of Israel’s founding, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and American Jewish Committee leader Jacob Blaustein agreed in a public declaration that the fledgling state would not speak for the rest of world Jewry and vice versa, but their agreement was quickly abandoned. Over time, Israel has assumed an ever more dominant role in world Jewish life, which has been both welcome and controversial. Ben-Gurion would not have anointed himself king of the Jews, even if he wanted to; Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu obviously covets the crown.

Efforts to refashion this relationship are also not new. Israel’s near-miraculous victory over its Arab neighbors in 1967 marked a turning point in how world Jewry viewed the Zionist homeland, as the fear of annihilation was replaced by pride and excited attachment. But this euphoria soon gave rise to worry, and every momentous anniversary since has prompted angst-ridden essays and demoralizing surveys, too numerous to recount here, about the growing disconnect between Israeli Jews (its non-Jews rarely make an appearance) and the rest of us.

We want to believe in Jewish Peoplehood with a capital P, and yet as Israeli society has matured, it has developed its own identity, singular and apart from the largely European cultural and political heritage of most American Jews. And American Jews, too, have evolved over 70 years to become more prosperous, powerful and assimilated into the wider culture.

Our ethnic origins and immigration experiences are different. The way we practice Judaism — or the way we don’t — is different. As Arnold Eisen, chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary, said at a conference in Israel in January:

“In North America, one has to choose again and again to be Jewish. In Israel, Jewish identity comes with the territory for the vast majority of the population — and comes with obligations, such as army service and taxation. A voluntarist community stands over against a coercive state. On one side, Jewishness is a highly individual matter. On the other, it is overwhelmingly collective.”

North American Jews stress personal morality and social ethics; Israeli Jews focus on history and destiny. These contrasting priorities are shaped by a more basic difference: American Jews are a religious minority, dependent on a society that values pluralism and diversity. Israeli Jews are an ethnic majority, shaped by the necessities of governing and the privileges of power.

Our conversation is stilted, in part because we are unable to talk and listen to each other genuinely. Most American Jews haven’t bothered to learn Hebrew, and unlike, say, the French, the Israeli government has never invested in a network of schools to teach the language systematically in the United States.

Several developments accelerated the widening divide in the past few years. Netanyahu’s provocative speech to Congress against the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran put him at odds with most American Jews and the president they warmly supported. His abrogation of the agreement to create an egalitarian prayer space at the Western Wall in Jerusalem last year alienated many members of the two largest religious denominations in America. His government’s lurch toward religious nationalism and its refusal to deal with the Palestinian occupation is leading to further disenchantment.

And while Netanyahu’s unflinching embrace of President Trump has cheered his domestic audience, it has disgusted many American Jews. The latest polling shows that more than two-thirds of Israelis approve of Trump’s leadership, while only about one-quarter of American Jews feel the same.

It’s clear that bridging the metaphorical gap between these communities will take more than a plate of hummus at a federation retreat. Netanyahu himself seems to understand this, which is why he increasingly looks to Republican Jews and Christian evangelicals for the love that more liberal Jews are withholding.

But instead of the Israeli prime minister shunning many American Jews, and American Jews turning away from Israel, a healthier, more realistic relationship requires leveling the playing field with mutual respect. Israelis can learn from us about living in pluralistic families and communities, and developing innovative expressions of Jewish faith and culture. We can learn so much from Israelis about collective identity, national pride and self-sovereignty, and about surviving in a very tough neighborhood.

And we each have a vested interest in each other’s security and sustainability.

“Seeing the global Jewish community as multiple centers, with Israel as one center, better describes how Jews actually live,” David Shneer, a history professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, said in an email. He’s one of the scholars who posited a decade ago that the “bipolar universe of Israel and every other Jew” no longer works, and he’s even more convinced of it now, 10 years later.

Hartman, president of the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, has also thought deeply about this challenge, arguing, since a seminal paper published in 2008, that Israel and world Jewry must radically alter their relationship.

He told me in a recent phone conversation from Israel that he doesn’t even use the word “Diaspora” anymore, and that he is formulating an alternative that builds on the idea that we all have multiple places we call home. Where we were raised. Where we live now. Where our children or our siblings live.

“We need to reclaim a family discourse. Families in fact have multiple centers that interact with each other,” Hartman said. “You have to work out the rules, because the rules aren’t simple. There’s a complex interplay. When you visit your kid’s home, you may open the fridge, but you don’t complain if it’s dirty. You don’t move the furniture.

“The multiple home narrative doesn’t require you to get into a conversation about whose home is better. It’s not a zero sum game. We are not competing. Your home is yours because that’s where you live.”

Instead of trying to build a bridge across many thousands of miles, as if we can somehow meet halfway and grasp each other’s hands in an elusive bond of unity, I suggest that those of us in the Diaspora think of ourselves as being at home. Unlike so many hyphenated Americans, we are blessed also with a homeland, Israel. Not necessarily the land of our birth, or our ancestors’ birth, but a living, breathing homeland connected to us through history and faith, one that we can engage and support and love.

While we live as equal Jewish citizens here.

THE HORROR OF NOT BEING ON FACEBOOK

The horror dating story everyone dreads.

THE HIGHEST FLAG IN THE WORLD

Jarah, a 22-year-old Palestine refugee cancer survivor and amputee, climbs Mount Everest Base Camp to save his UNRWA school in Jordan

When he was diagnosed with bone cancer at age 15, he didn’t give up.

When his right leg was amputated, he didn’t give up.

When 9 of the 11 climbers were medevaced, he didn’t give up.

When it dropped to -14 Celsius and he couldn’t feel his face, he didn’t give up.
Jarah reached Everest Base Camp on Saturday, April 14 because he never gave up.

And to mark 17,500 steps up Mt. Everest, he raised a flag.

He raised a flag to help refugees like him have the chance to get a quality UNRWA education.

He raised a flag to show fellow cancer survivors and amputees that nothing is impossible.

He raised a flag to show solidarity with 5 million Palestine refugees.

Weather permitting, Jarah will be climbing down the mountain over the course of the next week.

For live updates, follow #MyFirstStep as well as his personal posts on TwitterFacebook, and Instagram.

Show Jarah that you’re willing to take your own step to save his UNRWA school and others like it.

FALSE FLAGS OVER SYRIA

Trump and his partners in (war) crimes UK/France decided to raise the body count in war-torn Syria, striking Damascus and guaranteeing that this long, savage imperialist conflict will remain claiming Syrian lives.

Report by Mazin Qumsiyeh

Today was the day that International inspectors arrived to examine the
unproven claim by the US/Israeli backed terrorist rebels that chemical
weapons were used in Ghouta (‘white helmets’ were known previously to have
manufactured media events**). Today at 3 AM the US, UK, and France attacked
targets in Syria with >103 missiles (71 of them were shot down by Syrian
air defenses, old Soviet Era weapons). Russia, China, Bolivia, and Iran
condemned the attack as a violation of the UN Charter and Russia is now
considering supplying Syria and “other countries” (perhaps Iran and
Lebanon?) with S-300 and other advanced air defense systems. Originally
Russia said it will target missiles and their launch facilities which could
have led to WWIII. It seems there was some sort of “understanding”: 1)
US/UK/France target unused fields and facilities with no damage for
domestic propaganda purposes (to appear tough and satisfy the
Israel/Zionist lobbies who have been pushing for war like they did in Iraq,
Yemen, and Libya and now pushing for war on Iran), 2) Russia and Syria also
get a propaganda “win” having shot most of the missiles using “old” Soviet
era weapons and Syria gets to get more advanced weapons.

They lied to us about Yugoslavia, about Ukraine, about Iraq, about Libya
and now they lie about Syria and Iran. If these lies continue, World War
is the price not just bankruptcy of US taxpayers (already $21 trillion in
debt) and millions of lives lost.
Recent report of Chinese analysts being examined by Evgeniy Satanovskiy -
Russian leading expert in the field of Middle East. British and American
forces have been destroyed on a large scale in the Ghouta region, with the
22nd regiment of the SAS, those surviving the pinpoint Russian bombing,
that is, having to flee on buses in disguise. This is the reason for
skripal plan and the chemical weapons false flag.
We have no sympathy for the US, UK France Israeli governments’ position.
These are governments that have used chemical weapons (e.g. agent orange in
Vietnam, White Phosphorous in Gaza, last week nerve agents in Gaza) These
are hypocritical governments that fount International law (e.g. supporting
colonial occupation of the Syrian Golan and of Palestine) and support
brutal regimes (e.g. “Saudi” Arabia and Apartheid “Israel”). While that
does not mean we support any other governments (Syria, Turkey, Iran etc),
we do support justice and human rights and oppose tyranny.

Note from Russia’s Embassy in the U.S. about Syria
“A pre-designed scenario is being implemented. Again, we are being threatened. We warned that SUCH ACTIONS WILL NOT BE LEFT WITHOUT CONSEQUENCES.
All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London and Paris.”
