Meander-Greek Key

The meander motif took its name from the river Meander, a river with many twists, mentioned by Homer in Iliad. The motif is also known as Greek key or Greek fret.

Meander was the most important symbol in Ancient Greece, symbolizing infinity or the eternal flow of things. Many temples and objects were decorated with this motif, and it is considered that there is a connection with the Cretan labyrinth – indeed – a labyrinth can be drawn using a Greek key.

Meander symbolizes as well the bonds of friendship, of love and devotion and that’s the reason it’s often given as marriage gift. It can symbolize as well the four cardinal points, the 4 seasons, waves – especially in the round version of it, or snakes, among others.

Hallmark Yanks ‘Swastika’-Themed Wrapping Paper

Greeting Giant Sorry for Resemblance to Nazi Symbol

 By Reuters

Hallmark Cards Inc, the purveyor of products that it says “make the world a more caring place,” was pulling gift wrap from U.S. stores after a complaint that the paper appears to display a swastika, a symbol associated with the persecution of Jews.

Hallmark issued an apology on Tuesday and said that the blue and silver wrapping paper was designed to represent a type of vessel, and any similarity to a swastika was unintentional. The company said the pattern has been in the company’s reference archives for several years.

Hallmark spokeswoman Linda Odell said a customer in California first raised the issue, seeing a swastika image in a series of intersecting lines featured on the holiday paper.

“As soon as we were made aware of the situation, we began taking steps to remove the gift wrap from all store shelves and we will ensure the pattern is not used on any product formats going forward,” a company statement said. “We sincerely apologize for this oversight and for any unintended offense.”

Hallmark did not answer a question about how much paper was involved in the recall.

“The priority is communicating with retailers about removing the current version from shelves,” Odell said.

Roughly 6 million Jews were murdered by the Nazis in Germany during World War Two, and the swastika is seen by many as a symbol of support for the Nazis.

Kansas City, Missouri-based Hallmark, which is privately owned, has roughly $4 billion in annual revenue from sales of greeting cards, gift wrap and other products sold in 100 countries.

Walgreens Hanukkah Wrapping Paper Has Swastikas

By Anne Cohen

NBC  Nothing says Happy Holidays like Nazi-themed wrapping paper.

Cheryl Shapiro was shopping in the Northridge, California, Walgreens’ Hanukkah section when she came across something odd — something swastika-shaped. Shapiro, who was in the store with her grandson, was outraged.

“I told them I wanted this taken off the shelves immediately – not just your store, but national,” Shapiro said. “I was really putting my foot down because I was appalled by this.”

“I came home and I spoke to my rabbi. He couldn’t believe it,” she continued. “I’m still very upset about it, that something like this could be on the market.”

NBC4 Los Angeles reports that Walgreens is “looking into” the incident, but that the local store has removed the offending item from its shelves.

UPDATE The international Raelian movement has issued a statement calling for the item to be placed back in stock.

“We feel outraged by Walgreen’s decision and ask for this gift wrapping paper to be made available again,” said Raelian Guide Thomas Kaenzig, who is also president of an organization known as the ProSwastika Alliance.

“The swastika is still a holy symbol for billions of Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Raelians,” Kaenzig explained. “Long before it was unjustly hijacked by Hitler and the Nazis for ill purposes, it was revered for thousands of years as a religious symbol and a sign of good will. It can be found worldwide in architectural features and decorative ornamentation of all kinds, including in Jewish synagogues. It can even be found in many places in Israel. [See www.proswastika.org/israel]

“It’s unacceptable for us to see a major U.S. retail chain ban this symbol that is so dear to billions around the world,” Kaenzig said. “Would Walgreens dare to remove gift wrapping containing crosses if a Native American complained that his culture suffered enormously under the Christian cross? And what about an African American whose ancestors died at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan in front of a burning cross?”

“Why this double-standard?” he asked. “In the name of Raelians, Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Native Americans and others around the world for whom the swastika conveys only its beautiful ancient meaning, we demand that Walgreens swiftly reintroduce this wrapping paper,” Kaenzig said. “And we ask that Walgreens also issue an apology to the millions of people right here in the United States for whom this symbol is sacred.”

Israeli soldiers attempt to

detain 2-year-old for rock-

throwing

JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces in occupied East Jerusalem on Friday attempted to detain two Palestinian children, a two-year-old and a nine-year old, on suspicion of throwing rocks.Israeli soldiers were conducting a raid on the home of the Jaber family in the Silwan neighborhood in order to search for an individual suspected of throwing rocks at them from the roof, the family told Ma’an.When the soldiers ascended to the roof to detain the alleged culprit, however, they found a two-year-old named Mimati Asaad Jaber who was playing with his mother. While they were playing, apparently, a rock had fallen into the street below.

The boy’s grandfather, who was in the house during the raid, said that the boy was only playing and that he did not know there were soldiers in the street below the building when he tossed the stone.

Upon seeing the two-year-old with his mother, however, the Israeli soldiers shifted their attention to a nine-year-old member of the family nearby.

Members of the Jaber family told Ma’an that once Israeli soldiers found out the nine-year-old boy’s name — Izz al-Din al-Qassam, also the name of a famous Palestinian national hero and used by Hamas as the name for its military brigades — they began questioning him.

The Israeli soldiers attempted to detain the nine-year-old boy based on the fact that he had “colored rocks” in his pockets, presumably to throw at soldiers, but when they searched the child they found that the “rocks” were in fact candy.

A new draft law being considered by Israeli lawmakers would lead to charges of up to 20 years, even if it could not be proven that rock-throwers intended to cause damage.

A 2011 report by Israeli rights group B’tselem, meanwhile, noted that around 100 percent of all Palestinian children accused of rock-throwing are convicted, largely because minors are kept in prison for the duration of any trial so the pressure to plea bargain is high.

Military Court Watch estimated that at the beginning of October more than 180 Palestinian children and youths were being held in Israeli prisons, down from 250 in June.

According to a 2013 report by the UN’s Children’s Fund, Israel is the only country in the world where children are systematically tried in military courts and subjected to “cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment.”

Over the past decade, Israeli forces have arrested, interrogated, and prosecuted around 7,000 children between 12 and 17, mostly boys, at a rate of “an average of two children each day,” UNICEF said.

Israeli Soldiers Create Least Sexy Pin-Up Ever

By Sigal Samuel FOR

MTKL’s Israeli Army Women Calendar

Just a couple of months after the Gaza war, Israel has found a new way “to show the world the beauty of Israel and its people” — via the power of a pin-up calendar featuring real IDF soldiers.

Or, as the creators of the MTKL Israeli Army Women Calendar like to call them, “the chosen amongst the chosen people.”

These chosen women, brought together by two former (male) soldiers who “scoured the ranks of the powerful Israeli army,” would like you to donate $25 to their Indiegogo campaign so that they can not only ship you this calendar, but also create a whole line of clothing and accessories that will blend “the best of military and street into must-have urban fashion.”

MTKL

Their goal is to make $30,000 off the calendars, enabling them to bring their clothing line to production in early 2015. So far they’ve raised about $3700 — which means that a bunch of people are already walking around wearing jewelry “fashioned after the official IDF Dog Tag.”

Scary thought.

I say that because, if you ask me, this fashion line — and the pin-up calendar being used to showcase it — is pretty much the most unsexy thing I can imagine.

It’s not just that this product is the work of two men using a bunch of women’s bodies to make a quick buck. Leave aside for a minute the obvious feminist objections to pin-up calendars writ large — and hone in on this calendar in particular. It doesn’t take long to see that we’re being sold more than your average “male gaze” sexual fantasy. What we’re being sold is an ideology that equates sexiness with militarism, and Israel with both.

There are at least 4 deeply unfortunate things about this:

1) It shows that Israel’s macho culture — a culture that says military violence is a beautiful and even arousing thing — is alive and well.

2) Women are supposed to be grateful to be allowed into this macho culture. The fact that they’re included is a sign of the culture’s progressiveness, of how evolved and “egalitarian” it is (to quote MTKL’s campaign).

3) Plenty of women actually buy into this logic. That includes the international buyers of MTKL’s products (sadly, I have no doubt that their products will sell) and the Israeli models themselves.

4) By buying into this logic, they are — wittingly or unwittingly — working to put a sexy face on the occupation.

But the occupation isn’t sexy.

The Gaza war, just recently ended, wasn’t sexy.

And so seeing these women’s limbs draped in ammunition belts, their faces smeared in war paint and their bodies surrounded with guns and knives — it doesn’t feel sexy.

The MTKL designers may think their calendar will help “to show the world the beauty of Israel and its people” — but I suspect that for an increasing number of people, this insistence on associating Israel with militarism actually does the exact opposite.

Could ISIS Target the West with Ebola?

Military expert says infecting carriers with the virus is remarkably easy – and could be easy to weaponize.

Islamic State (ISIS) could be planning to use biological warfare against the West, a military expert stated earlier this week – by introducing the Ebola virus into the camps of its enemies.

While the theory sounds like it was ripped from the script of the 2002 horror classic 28 Days Later, it is feasible, experts say.

According to Captain (ret.) Al Shimkus, a Professor of National Security Affairs at the US Naval War College, spreading the virus would be remarkably simple.

“The individual exposed to the Ebola Virus would be the carrier,” Shimkus told Forbes earlier this week. “In the context of terrorist activity, it doesn’t take much sophistication to go to that next step to use a human being as a carrier.”

Shimkus, who teaches a course in biowarfare, stated that ISIS would simply need to send “a half dozen operatives” into any West African country battling the epidemic to create a carrier – then intentionally infect as many people as possible in a target country.

The fatality rate for Ebola hovers at 50% – making it an effective weapon – but that rate could skyrocket to well over 90% in countries without sufficient medical care, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Shinkus isn’t the only expert to warn about Ebola being weaponized.

Amanda Teckman, author of the paper “The Bioterrorist Threat of Ebola in East Africa and Implications for Global Health and Security” concluded in 2013 that “the threat of an Ebola bioterrorist attack in East Africa is a global health and security concern, and should not be ignored.”

And last month, a Tunisian terrorist for ISIS was found researching biowarfare on his laptop – although the scope of his research focused on the bubonic plague, not Ebola.

Experts say the find proves not that ISIS already has biological weapons, but is at least actively seeking them to expand their jihadist campaign in the Middle East and around the globe – and become an unprecedented threat if they do.

“If they obtain biological or chemical weapons, they will use them,” Princeton University Jurisprudence professor Robert George stated to the Glenn Beck show in September. “There’s no question. There’s nothing that’s stopping them from using those weapons.”

Over 7,200 people have been infected with Ebola, according to latest WHO estimate – including several cases recorded in Spain and in Macedonia.

Ben Affleck, Bill Maher tussle over Islamophobia

Actor gets visibly agitated by comments he considered Islamophobic, cutting off the host, author Sam Harris and N.Y. Times columnist Nicholas Kristof.

A week after sparking controversy over his anti-Islam comments, HBO host Bill Maher doubled down in a debate over Islam that pushed Ben Affleck’s Islamophobia button on Friday.

“It’s the only religion that acts like the mafia,” he said of Islam on his program, Real Time with Bill Maher, “that will f–king kill you if you say the wrong thing, draw the wrong picture, or write the wrong book.”

Earlier in the heated discussion, Maher and author Sam Harris were agreeing with each other that liberals do not hold up liberal standards when it comes to Islam.

“You and I have been trying to make the case I think that liberals need to stand up for liberal principles. This is what I said on last week’s show,” said Maher, referring to the previous installment when he stated, “If we’re giving no quarter to intolerance, shouldn’t we be starting with the mutilators and the honor killers?”

That debate drew fire from Islamic scholar Reza Aslan, who said on CNN on Monday, “The problem is that you’re talking about a religion of one and a half billion people, and certainly it becomes very easy to just simply paint them all with a single brush.”

On Friday, Maher said that liberals applaud for principles like “freedom of speech, freedom to practice any religion you want without fear of violence, freedom to leave a religion, equality for women, equality for minorities, including homosexuals … but then when you say in the Muslim world this is what’s lacking then they get upset.”

“Liberals have rally failed on the topic of theocracy,” responded Harris.
He asserted that liberals criticize “white theocracy” and “Christians” but have failed to be critical about “the treatment of women, and homosexuals and free thinkers and public intellectuals in the Muslim world.”

He added,” The crucial point of confusion is that we have been sold this meme of Islamaphobia, where every criticism of the doctrine of Islam gets conflated with bigotry toward Muslims as people, which is intellectually ridiculous.”

Are you the person who understands the officially codified document of Islam?” Affleck queried Harris.

“Actually, I’m well educated on this topic,” Harris responded.

“I’m not denying that certain people are bigoted against Muslim people, and that’s a problem,” added Harris, but Affleck did not allow him to finish his sentence.

The actor jumped in, describing Harris’s generalizations about Islam as “gross” and “racist.”

“It’s so not,” interjected Maher.

“It’s like saying, ‘you shifty Jew!'” said Affleck.

Harris shot back, “We have to be able to criticize bad ideas… and Islam is the motherload of bad ideas.”

“That’s just a fact,” chimed in Maher.

“It’s just an ugly thing to say,” said Affleck.

New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof tried to bring in some balance, telling Maher that the picture he is painting is “to some extent true, but it is hugely incomplete,” but his calm analysis was cut off by an agitated Affleck.

“It is certainly true that plenty of fanatics and jihadi are Muslim, but the people who are standing up to them – Malala, Mohammed Ali in Iran, in prison for 9 years for speaking up for Christians, a friend that I had in Pakistan who was shot this year, Rashid Rehman, for defending people accused of apostasy –,” said Kristof before Affleck interjected, ending his contribution to the debate.

Affleck argued that the others were stereotyping 1.6 billion people for the beliefs of a handful of radicals. “That’s just not true, Ben,” countered Maher.

Harris then gave an analysis, in which he described 20% of the Muslim world as being Islamists, basing his assessment on various polls, and then described a wider circle of conservative Muslims “who can honestly look at ISIS and say that does not represent us, we’re horrified by that, but they hold views about human rights, women and homosexuals that are deeply troubling.”

He argued that liberal Muslims have to be empowered, adding, “Lying about the link between doctrine and behavior is not going to do that.”

The debate carried on a little longer before Maher made his mafia comment. After that point, everyone agreed to disagree.

Aslan, commenting on Affleck’s aggressiveness during the debate, tweeted on his account, “Watching @BenAffleck go after Sam Harris & Bill Maher with that TONE really made me scared of white New Englander.”

ISRAELI GAYS SCORNED FOR USING ISIS IMAGES

Drek – one of Tel Aviv’s most popular gay party organizers – has inspired a massive wave of criticism and anger online after using imagery inspired by the Islamic State group’s executions on a number of posters promoting the club’s parties.

Gay party slammed for ISIS imagery

Gay party organizers publicize party using images inspired by Islamic State group’ executions, garnering anger, criticism.

Drek – one of Tel Aviv’s most popular gay party organizers – has inspired a massive wave of criticism and anger online after using imagery inspired by the Islamic State group’s executions on a number of posters promoting the club’s parties.

The Islamic State radical terror group currently ravaging Iraq and Syria has executed three Westerners and published their horrific beheadings in now infamous videos in which an all-black clad executioner hovers ominously above his kneeling victim, dressed in all orange jump suit.

The posters invoke the visual language of the executions and of the Islamic State group in general in a bid promote a party dubbed ‘Drekistan at the Haoman’ which took place last Friday at Tel Aviv’s Haoman 17 Club.

Though a number of people shrugged off the posters as poor taste, most were enraged: “Disgusting! Getting a laugh off of the murder of innocent victims,” wrote one commentator; “very baaaaaaaaaaad,” wrote another, while a third lamented it “poor satire”.

Posting the images online to Drek’s Facebook page, the organizers wrote “as the new Islamic State gains traction in the Middle East, we at Drek have decided to give in to Sharia law and cheer the stubborn Daesh,” using the Arab acronym for the group, and invoking a veiled play on words – “stubborn” in Hebrew can be written as “hard necked”, a reference to the group’s infamous executions.

Amiri Kalman, one of the Drek’s founders, said in response: “We are trying to react to current events. We have been doing it for a number of years. But we reject violence in any form and that includes the (execution) videos intended to scare the world.

“Therefore we also refuse to participate with this fear and refuse to become hysterical. This is satire, and our way of showing our contempt of them and their videos.”

He further noted that the party itself did not include any Islamic State-inspired imagery or props.
