ISRAEL’S LATEST PATHETIC ATTEMPT TO INCREASE TOURISM

BEX Alert Extraordinaire … Truly pathetic

THE SETTLEMENTS ARE STRANGLING PALESTINIAN TOURISM

Palestinian officials say the growth of Israeli settlements – there are now 22 around Bethlehem – is steadily strangling access, prompting tourists to stay away.

Israeli settlements squeezing Palestinian tourism, officials say

Palestinian tourism expert says $1.4 billion lost every year, as roads for settlers, border controls and administrative issues seriously hinder local industry.

Standing on the monumental hillside south of Bethlehem where King Herod the Great was buried more than 2,000 years ago, Fadi Kattan stretches out his arm to point out the nearby Israeli settlements of Tekoa and Nokdim.

“That’s part of the problem,” says Kattan, a Palestinian tourism expert, explaining the obstacles hindering the growth of the local industry in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Because of the roads Israel builds mainly for Jewish settlers, including Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who lives in Nokdim, Palestinian areas are frequently cut off, making them less accessible to tourists, he says.

Then there is Herodium, a major attraction administered by Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority. The income flows to Israel, not the Palestinians. The same goes for Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, which is also in the West Bank.

Perhaps most challenging, Palestinian tour operators cannot easily tap into the 300 million Arabs living in nearby countries since very few of them can readily visit the West Bank, whose borders are controlled by Israel.

“When you add it all up, the movement and access problems and everything else, we are losing $1.4 billion a year,” says Kattan, estimating that current revenue of $460 million a year would be nearer $1.8 billion if locals had full control.

It is an issue that comes to the fore every year in the run-up to Christmas, when tens of thousands of religious tourists make their way to Bethlehem, other parts of the West Bank and Jerusalem to celebrate the birth, life and death of Jesus.

To highlight the increasing strain Bethlehem and surrounding towns are under, Palestinian officials took a group of foreign journalists on a guided tour of the area this week.

The ruins at Herodium (archive photo)

Underscoring how sensitive the topic is, the Israeli tourism ministry is taking journalists on its own tour of Nazareth and other Christian towns in Israel on Sunday, and the Israel Project, a pro-Israel lobby, has organised another media tour two days later covering Christian churches.

When it comes to Bethlehem, a city of 25,000 just five miles south of Jerusalem, the critical issue is getting foreign tourists past Israel’s separation wall and checkpoints and convincing them to stay the night.

Many now choose to stay in Jerusalem and make a day trip. Palestinian officials say the growth of Israeli settlements – there are now 22 around Bethlehem – is steadily strangling access, prompting tourists to stay away.

“We can’t have real development in this sector until the occupation ends,” said Rula Ma’aya, the Palestinian minister of tourism, decrying the pressure on overnight stays.

Figures show overnight stays are up 9% this year from last year, but officials say the number remains far below what it should be and the overall revenue is down.

While visitors from Russia, Poland and Italy – the top three – tend to stay the night, Americans, who spend more, are more likely to stay in Jerusalem, with the revenue going to Israel.

“In history, Bethlehem and Jerusalem were always twin cities,” said Ma’aya. “Now, Bethlehem is being isolated.”

Israel August Tourism Numbers Take a

Sharp Downturn From Last Year

182,000 Visitors Recorded in 2014, Down 36% From 2013

Israel’s August tourist numbers took a sharp downturn from the previous year’s figures.

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, 182,000 visitor entries were recorded for the month in Israel, down 36 percent from August 2013. Of the visitor entries, 164,000 were tourists staying more than one night, 32 percent less than August a year ago.

During the month, hundreds of rockets were fired at Israel, including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, amid the Israeli military’s operation in Gaza. Foreign airlines canceled flights for at least two days after a rocket landed near Ben Gurion Airport in central Israel.

It is estimated that Israel’s tourism industry generates about $11 billion annually and is responsible for creating 200,000 jobs domestically.

“The tremendous blow to tourism suffered by the Israeli economy in all areas of Israel as a result of canceled visits is a factor in the economic slowdown,” Tourism Ministry director general Amir Halevy said in a statement. “Everyone understands the importance of rehabilitating tourism as an engine for economic growth.”

It is not unusual for Israel’s tourism numbers to dip during times of violence. This year’s August statistics were lower than all the August statistics from 2007 to 2013, but 49 percent higher than August 2006, the time of the Second Lebanon War, with 122,000 entries.

This week, the Tourism Ministry is convening all the Israel Government Tourist Office directors from around the world to formulate a plan for attracting tourists to Israel.

WEST BANK LUNA PARK // KILL A ‘TERRORIST’ WIN YOUR SPOT IN THE NEXT WORLD

Tourism in Israeli settlements: practice shooting Palestinians (From

Israeli newspaper Yidioth Ahronot published today (June, 18th, 2012) about a tourist’s activity offered by Gush Etzion settlements, where visitors can practice how to shoot “terrorists”.

Stories about such tours both in settlements and army bases are always published, but no serious attention given to such scary culture of hatred and violence. (see here one example in Hebrew from 2003)

Tourists from across the globe visit Gosh Etzion settlements, where they are offered by settlers “enjoyable” package under the name “Hebrew Extreme Tourism” with range of activities that include: story telling about battles, view live shooting performance and an activity where visitors can practice shooting at “terrorists-mechablim”‘s cardboard pictures hung on the wall.

The word used for terrorist in Hebrew is “Mechabel” (mechablim for terrorists). In Israeli discourse this is a synonym for Palestinian.

So now we know who the ‘terrorist’ is… how to deal with them is still another question…. right wing settlers came up with a money making solution which can keep tourists busy for a day or so….

Israeli diplo’s daughter busted at JFK on outstanding drug warrant

Police last night arrested the 39-year-old daughter of the former Israeli defense minister on outstanding drug charges as she tried to fly from Kennedy Airport to Tel Aviv, The Post has learned.*

Talya Ben-Eliezer was taken into custody about 8:40 p.m. as she tried to go through security at Terminal 4, and was hauled off to central booking in Queens, Port Authority police confirmed. She was heading toward Delta Flight 268.*

It didn’t take long before officials with the Israeli consulate in Manhattan began “calling everyone on this,” one source told The Post.*

Israeli consulate spokesman Shahar Azani said, “We are not at liberty to discuss individual cases.”*

Ben-Eliezer is one of five children of Labor Party Knesset Member Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, a retired senior commander in the Israeli army who served as defense minister in 2001 and 2002. He has also been the military governor in the occupied West Bank and a deputy prime minister.*

The elder Ben-Eliezer did not respond to messages from The Post.*

Talya Ben-Eliezer was detained on an outstanding “no-bail warrant” issued by the sheriff in Tampa, Fla., for a “dangerous drug” offense. She was booked as a “fugitive from justice.”*

The Florida sheriff’s office did not have an immediate comment on the arrest. Customs officials did not have a comment.*

A source familiar with the situation told The Post that Ben-Eliezer had been in Florida about a year undergoing medical treatment for a seizure condition. The arrest warrant was issued after, the source said, the woman allegedly obtained oxycontin without the proper paperwork.*

Ben-Eliezer was not traveling on a diplomatic passport. Instead, she was flying as an American citizen; she holds both US and Israeli citizenship. She is expected to be extradited to Florida to face a charge of “obtaining a controlled substance by fraud.” The warrant for her arrest was issued on July 27, according to sheriff’s records.*

A source said soon after Ben-Eliezer was detained at the airport “she stated … to Customs officials” that she is the daughter of a senior member of the Israeli government.

Dead Sea fails to make list of New 7 Wonders of Nature

Attempts to push the Dead Sea into the global public eye this year included a mass photo op by U.S. photographer Spencer Tunick, who shot 1,200 nude Israeli men and women at the famous natural landmark.

A provisional list of the New 7 Wonders of Nature was announced Friday, and Israel’s Dead Sea failed to make the cut.The Dead Sea was in the running for a place alongside spectacular natural phenomena such as the Amazon, Iguazu Falls, and Indonesia’s Komodo national park, which did win the prestigous title.

The four other sites who made the list were Halong Bay in Vietnam, Jeju Island in South Korea, Puerto Princesa Subterranean River in the Philippines, and Table Mountain in South Africa.

The Dead Sea is shared by Israel, Jordan and the West Bank. It was almost eliminated from the contest in 2009 when the Palestinian Authority threatened a boycott over the participation of an Israeli settler council.

But a last-minute compromise allowed the candidacy to proceed to the next stage.

Over 100 million people participated in choosing the seven new, man-made wonders of the world announced in July 2007. Winning the title nearly tripled tourist visits to Jordan’s ancient ruins of Petra, to the east of the Dead Sea.

Attempts to push the Dead Sea into the global public eye this year included a highly covered visit by U.S. life style high-priestess Martha Stewart, as well as a mass photo op by renowned U.S. photographer Spencer Tunick, who shot 1,200 nude Israeli men and women at the famous natural landmark.

TAKING PRIDE IN APARTHEID

This is part of Israel’s attempts to “pinkwash” its colonial policies and occupation of the Palestinian people by diverting international attention to a fictional public relations image appealing to western liberals.

Israeli Pinkwashing Campaign to be Launched at Berlin Tourism Show in March

Yossi Bartal, Connie Hackbarth (AIC)

Berlin’s International Tourism Trade Show (ITB-Berlin) will be the site from which the Israeli government launches its campaign to promote gay tourism to the city of Tel Aviv.

This is part of Israel’s attempts to “pinkwash” its colonial policies and occupation of the Palestinian people by diverting international attention to a fictional public relations image appealing to western liberals.

ITB-Berlin, which brands itself as the “world’s leading travel trade show”, will host the Israeli exhibition entitled Tel Aviv Gay Vibe- Free; Fun; Fabulous. According to information on the ITB-Berlin website, this exhibition is a joint project of Israel’s GLBT Association (Aguda) and Tel Aviv’s Tourism Association, which work together to generate pride events for tourists, information materials, the construction of tour packages to Tel Aviv and their marketing and advertising.

According to a public relations piece, Israeli events in ITB-Berlin, which runs from 9-13 March 2011, will include a celebratory cocktail for gay travel agents from throughout the world and two huge parties for the German public, with DJs and artists flown in from Tel Aviv, in addition to the traditional trade exhibition.

Yaniv Weitzman, a member of the Tel Aviv Municipal Council and special advisor to the mayor on the gay community, stated that in 2010 some NIS 340,000 were invested in promoting gay tourism by the Tel Aviv Municipality and Israel’s Ministry of Tourism. Estimates note that some 4,000 gay tourists came to Tel Aviv in June 2010 for the city’s pride events, while a 20% increase in this number is anticipated for 2011.

Shai Deutsch, a board member of the Aguda, says that new events were developed for Tel Aviv gay tourism, including English language tours on Fridays focusing on the history of the gay community in the city, in addition to three special weekends: Tel AvivPurim Carnival, Tel Aviv Pride Week and Tel Aviv Endless Summer events in September. A “hot city pass” discount card is also being promoted for gay tourists.

Deutsch explains that while the campaign is currently focusing on Germany and the UK as sources of large number of tourists, the campaign will expand its reach in the coming year to include addition European countries, particularly Holland and France, in addition to the United States.

Palestinian Queers for BDS issued a statement in June 2010 calling upon the LGBTQI communities around the globe to stand for justice in Palestine through adopting and implementing broad boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel until the latter has ended its multi-tiered oppression of the Palestinian people, in line with the 2005 Palestinian civil society call for BDS.

Additionally, in November 2010 the Tel-Aviv based group Israeli Queers for Palestine issued a statement denouncing the nomination of Tel Aviv in MTV’s gay tourist attraction “a shameful tribute to apartheid” and supported the aforementioned call by Palestinian Queers for BDS.

ITB-Berlin has a code of corporate social responsibility, stating that it “sees itself as a link between research and science, between companies, markets and societies. It utilizes this key position in order to…engage in a dialogue with companies in their efforts to create economically, socially and ecologically responsible tourism products and services…The members of the ITB Team admit their overall social responsibility…

In another attempt to hide its ugly image, the Ministry of Tourism is going ahead by hosting a group of Chilean miners. Again, despite attempts to get these brave people to change their mind about coming to Israel, they will be arriving here tomorrow…..

Chilean miners to visit Israel Wednesday

Tourism Ministry plans extensive tour for miners, hoping they will help improve Israel’s image

Thirty-one of the 33 miners who were trapped for 68 days underground in Chile are due to arrive in Israel Wednesday for a week-long tour. “It won’t be a circus,” the Tourism Ministry vowed ahead of the long-awaited visit.

The ministry wants to use the heroes’ visit to improve Israel’s image in the world. The miners will be traveling with their wives, the local governor, and senior Chilean journalists.

Rescued after 68 days (Photo: AP)

Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov will welcome the miners at the airport, from where they will travel to Jerusalem for an afternoon press conference. Hosts say the tour will be of a spiritual character, allowing the miners to “give thanks” for their heroic rescue.

In Jerusalem, the party is set to visit the Old City, the Western Wall, the Knesset, Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum, and a number of churches. On Saturday they plan to tour Bethlehem, and then to get a taste of the Jerusalem nightlife.
Then, on Sunday, the miners plan to visit Masada and the Dead Sea after a special ceremony at the Presidential Residence. Throughout the visit they will also get to see Nazareth, Megiddo, the Golan Heights, Tiberias, and the Kinneret. A goodbye ceremony will be held in Tel Aviv.

The Palestinian Authority was outraged that the miners would not visit its territories as well, and the Palestinian foreign ministry said it would appeal to its Chilean counterpart to organize a tour of the West Bank.

SEX, LIES AND YOUTUBE

This seems to be a never ending saga…. it’s obvious that sex is a great attention getter….

Plans are even underway to release a second video within the next few days. I’m not sure if it is the zionist campaign or those of us that find it vile that is responsible for that…

Israelis Prove That Size Doesn’t Matter

By: CHRISTAL GARDIOLA

If sex truly sells, then the Canadian Council for Israel and Jewish Advocacy just boosted tourism in Israel. In conjuction with the Israel consulate in Toronto, CIJA recently released a 54-second spot as part of the Size Doesn’t Matter campaign, which aims to entice Canadian university students to visit the Middle Eastern country. The ad depicts a couple in bed, with the woman looking at the man’s crotch saying she can’t go there because “it’s too small.” The man replies, “I consider this a spot of worship. It may be small, but it’s brought the driest places to life. Baby, this is paradise.” The camera then pans to Israel maps and pocket guides placed strategically on the man’s lower body parts.

The video attempts to promote the more attractive side of Israel, but not everyone seem to be pleased. Jewish blogger Richard Silverstein thinks the ad was made in “bad taste” and says it ignores the cultural complexities any tourist will discover while visiting Israel. He says, “I’m simply flabbergasted that Israel would use the promise of fellatio and cunnilingus to promote itself.”

Writer Neal Ungerleider, who is based in New York but spent a good amount of time in Israel, believes the ad was humourous but completely missed the mark in promoting the country itself. He says, “It is hard to believe even a single viewer will show interest in visiting Israel or have a higher opinion of Israel because of the ad. As even a first year employee at an advertising agency will tell you, associating your country with small genitalia isn’t the smartest move to attract tourism.”

This is not the first time, however, that Israeli governing bodies have opted for sex-themed promotional material. In 2007, four bikini-clad women from the Israel Defense Forces posed in sexy army-wear for Maxim magazine’s July issue. David Saranga, consul for media and public affairs in New York, said to the New York Post that the spread was supposed to improve the image of Israel among men aged 18-38 years old. But the Maxim photos received a lot of backlash from critics and even Israeli female legislators who found the images to be pornographic. Fast forward to present times and Israel promotions continue to stir controversy with the Size Doesn’t Matter campaign.

Shalom Life made an attempt to contact the CIJA for comment, however no one was available. But since then, Shalom Life has gotten in touch with Maya Kadosh, spokesperson at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem. Despite previous notions, Kadosh said that a conversation with the Israeli consulate in Toronto “indicated that the Consulate had no part in the movie, did not initiate it and did not participate in its planning or its distribution.”

Rebecca Cherniak, coordinator of the campaign and chair of Israel affairs for the Canadian Federation of Jewish Students also confirms that Size Doesn’t Matter is an initiative strictly run by students, not by CIJA. She said that they have not been in contact with any Israeli ministers or diplomats. Cherniak also clears up that the video was meant to change students’ views of Israel or perhaps know more about it. “We were very dismayed by the way that Israel is represented in the media,” she says. “We think students are more critical and want to understand more than the typical slogans they see. We put together a campaign that grabs people’s attentions.”

Since its release four days ago, the video has received 11, 000 clicks and the website has recorded 4,000 hits in the same amount of time. As for the controversy behind the video’s sexual content, Cherniak thinks people are taking it too seriously. She emphasizes that the demographic of the video was not meant to be religious groups. “It’s for the 80 per cent of students who have no connection with the Middle East and who don’t even know where Israel is on the map,” Cherniak says, “I think the majority of students are comfortable with that level of sexuality.”

The Size Doesn’t Matter video will premiere at various events in 20 different Canadian universities. CFJS also plans to release a second video within the next few days. For more information, visit http://sizedoesntmatter.ca.

Size Doesn’t Matter: Israel’s Porno Tourism Promotion

Israel has annexed the West Bank and Gaza in map featured in Size Doesn’t Matter video

Israel’s hasbara and tourism promotions are the gift that keeps on giving as far as this blogger is concerned.  I hope you’ve all seen the atrocious video I offered here a few days ago in which a lissome lass tells her lad she can’t possibly go “down” on him because it’s “too small.”  The up shot of all this double entendre is of course that Israel may have a small, er, no…rather that Israel may be small, but that it is MIGHTY!!

There have been some rather delectable developments in the aftermath of this viral video which seems to have infected all those involved with it in a case of the jitters.  Shalomlife, a Canadian Jewish news portal, followed up on the story and managed to get an MFA spokesperson to deny the Size Doesn’t Matter campaign has anything to do with it or the consulate:

Kadosh said that a conversation with the Israeli consulate in Toronto “indicated that the Consulate had no part in the movie, did not initiate it and did not participate in its planning or its distribution.”

As I noted in my earlier post, this is given the lie by a rapturous announcement by the very same MFA and consulate that they were partnering with three wealthy Canadian Jewish pro-Israel individuals in a long-term rebranding campaign on Israel’s behalf of which the Toronto Film Festival’s controversial fete of Tel Aviv’s 100th birthday was but the start.

The student ostensibly behind the Small Penises Aren’t That Bad campaign, Rebecca Cherniak, is falling all over herself to deny that the organized Canadian Jewish community had anything to do with the video:

Rebecca Cherniak, coordinator of the campaign and chair of Israel affairs for the Canadian Federation of Jewish Students also confirms that Size Doesn’t Matter is an initiative strictly run by students, not by CIJA. She said that they have not been in contact with any Israeli ministers or diplomats.

A few problems with that statement.  My trusty informal researcher Robin notes that Cherniak is president of McMaster University’s Israel on Campus chapter. On the group’s website it says clear as day:

McMaster Israel On Campus thanks the Canadian Council for Israel and Jewish Advocacy (CIJA) for their generous contribution, which made this website possible.

And if you need any further evidence that this campaign is tied directly into Canada’s Israel lobby, note that the Size Doesn’t Matter domain was registered to:

Canadian Jewish Public Affairs is an Israel advocacy outfit whose board chair is none other than Joel Reitman, of the famed Canadian Reitman real estate family. Reitman is one of the three gentlemen I mentioned above partnering in the MFA’s Canadian rebranding project. So much for plausible deniability. Size Doesn’t Matter is about as much of a student-run project as the old Mickey Mouse Club TV show was run by the mouseketeers themselves (sorry for dating myself).

Cherniak embarrasses herself further by actually claiming the reason she produced the video was because Israel’s image suffered among the general public (and this was going to make it right?):

“We were very dismayed by the way that Israel is represented in the media,” she says. “We think students are more critical and want to understand more than the typical slogans they see. We put together a campaign that grabs people’s attentions.”

So she made the video for all those students out there thirsting for critical thinking about Israel, which is why the underlying theme is oral sex.  As for grabbing peoples’ attention (and crotches?)–that she did.

I’m a little sorry that someone complained to Vimeo about the SDM video and it was inexplicably pulled due to “explicit sexual content.”  I could see if it’d been pulled due to excruciating bad taste.  But calling this “explicit” leads one to believe that Vimeo is run by some extreme prudes.  Does this mean, by the way, that hasbara is pornographic or just THIS hasbara?

Thankfully, YouTube isn’t quite as prudish (yet).  People, don’t complain about this video.  It’s a gift.  In fact, if any of you are Canadians and have any spare change you might want to make a designated gift to one of these two estimable pro-Israel organizations that will help fund more of these videos.

And on that note, there are future videos in store for us in this series including one that takes us “from the office to the bedroom.”  I can’t wait!

SEX AND THE SINGLE ZIONIST ~~ “SIZE DOESN’T MATTER”

Israel can realistically start a tourist campaign using the following unique drawing cards….

Come see Apartheid in action…
Come see homes getting demolished…
Come see Palestinians living in tents outside what is their actual home…
Come see Palestinian children getting harassed on their way to school…
Come see Palestinian children getting tortured in Israeli prisons…
Come see peaceful demonstrators get tear-gassed by Israeli troops…
The list is endless…

BUT…. rather than ‘advertise’ the above, the zionists are embarking on a sex campaign to attract tourists….. this one really hitting a ‘new low level’….

This is not the first time that sex was used by the Israeli tourist industry…. but this time they really sink to a new level of degeneracy. It was brought to light on Tikun Olam’s  site…. Their post can be seen HERE. I won’t dare say who brought it to my attention….. she would turn redder than a robin’s breast….

The video used in the campaign follows….. THIS IS FOR MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY!

The last sex campaign to attract tourists to the island paradise was just over a year ago when Gay Porn was used as the attraction….

So, unless you are interested in seeing what I mentioned at the start of this post….. go elsewhere for your vacation. Don’t spend your hard earned tourist dollars in Israel…. there are places to see without walls in the way of your view or tear gas lingering in the air…. go to those places.

PALESTINIAN CHILDREN ROUTINELY TORTURED BY ISRAELI FORCES

Prisoner club: Israel uses electric shock torture against children

Palestinian Information Center

palestinian_children_in_israeli_jails.jpg

RAMALLAH, (PIC)– The Palestinian prisoner club accused the Israeli occupation authority (IOA) of committing new crimes of corporal torture against children through giving them electric shocks and beating them severely.

The club said that Palestinian child Hamza Al-Za’aol, who was kidnapped on the fourth of May on a charge of throwing stones, told club lawyers that Israeli occupation forces (IOF) used electric shocks against him in Etzion prison while another child detained on the same day called Ismail Al-Za’aol said he was severely beaten especially in his broken leg.

The club revealed that the number of children kidnapped during the first quarter of 2009 rose to 443 prisoners after kidnapping 14 minors this year.

In another related context, the popular committee against torture said in a report issued Wednesday that the IOF troops and the Shin Bet security service deliberately tortured Palestinian detainees through handcuffing them in a painful manner contrary to international law.

The committee said that its report depended on 574 cases of arrest and interrogation during the last year and on testimonies collected from Israeli soldiers by the organization of breaking the silence that is concerned about reporting on IOF troops’ violations.
