In support of the anti government protests the on-line group Anonymous shut down Egyptian Government websites.

Hackers Shut Down Egyptian Government Sites

Anonymous, a group of hackers from all over the world, gathered some 500 supporters in coordinated on-line forums and used software tools to bring down the websites of the Ministry of Information and President Hosni Mubarak’s National Democratic Party.

The websites were unavailable on Wednesday evening. 

In January Anonymous shut down the websites of the Tunisian government in support of the uprising that forced the dictator, Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali to flee the country.

The group stated – “we are sick of oppressive governments encroaching on people.”

The strikes by Anonymous, known as “distributed denial of service” attacks, could lead to criminal charges carrying up to 10 year prison sentences, the F.B.I. have said. Arrests have been made and equipment seized in Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany and France, according to British and American officials.

According to a member of the group – “these arrests aren’t going to have any effect.” Only a few hours after the raids, about 600 people, including many whom had been arrested and then released, were back online and coordinating it’s efforts in Egypt.
