This video is disturbing for several reasons, not the least of which being it shows a distinct lack of judgment and discernment on the part of the demonstrators. First of all, and most importantly, for those who are unfamiliar with me, I am not – in any way – sympathetic with the Zionist cause, nor am I a supporter of any of the erroneous land claims that the State of Israel has made.

Having said that, when it comes to this particular video I would say that the Israeli soldiers demonstrated a considerable amount of restraint in their confrontation with the demonstrators, and I will explain my reasons for saying so below. First and foremost, though I do not know for sure as I am unfamiliar with the area, it appears as though the demonstration is taking place at some sort of “checkpoint” – there is a large yellow gate that a few of the demonstrators open in order to enter the area that has been fenced off, separating the area where the soldiers are stationed.

If this is, in fact, a checkpoint, the soldiers could well have used lethal force to prevent anyone from passing without having been granted access – I’m not saying this is the proper thing, I’m merely stating that this tends to be standard operating procedure for the IOF, as well as any other military force when it comes to armed checkpoints (try passing one in Iraq and see what happens). Watching the video it is clear to see that there is one individual carrying the Palestinian flag as he enters through the gate – but he is also wearing loose clothing, something that could easily conceal … well, do I really have to spell it out? How much closer would he have had to have gotten to them for the soldiers to have considered the threat of a suicide bomber?

Yes, he was carrying a flag and had his hands raised, but that could have also been seen as a way to attract more soldiers into the “kill radius” of the bomb – the effective range to which the bomb is most hazardous and most deadly. Anyone in a forward operating base or who has had even the most basic briefings regarding terrorist threats will have been warned about these tactics and will be on guard against the possibility of an attack – even from women and children (as has happened numerous times in Iraq).

Secondly, the use of the tear-gas and other “non-lethal” devices had very little effect on the group; in fact, it was after the initiation of the use of these devices that the aforementioned man with the flag and his friends passed through the checkpoint. On its own that could have been seen as an “escalation” on the part of the demonstrators and could well have been met by the use of lethal force. Again, I’m not saying that this should have been the case, I’m merely saying that when you look at the video and ask yourself what it may have looked like from the “other side”, it could have been a lot different.

It is very easy to condemn the practices of all the soldiers serving in the armed services in Israel, but let me say this when it comes to that video – there was someone on that hill who had incredible restraint, otherwise the video would have told a far different story (if anyone would have survived to tell the story); fortunately there was somebody there who decided that wearing loose clothes was not reason enough to open fire, that breaching the checkpoint was not reason enough to be shot, and that the demonstrators – once they began to disband – were no real threat and did not need to be bothered with beyond that which had already taken place.

Don’t merely look at something and take it at its face value – there is far more going on here, so long as you are willing to look with honesty. As the saying goes, “it takes two to tango”.

I call your bullshit! These people were unnarmed. Next, I’m guessing you will suggest that the photographers cameras could easily be mistaken for weapons.

Nope, this was a peaceful demonstration. You’ve heard the expression, “You don’t throw stones at someone carrying a machine gun.” Well these people weren’t even carrying stones.

    unprovoked and unjust.

The ability to see both sides of an issue is one of the first things necessary to solving problems. Yes, you do not throw stones at someone with a machine gun – neither should you throw stones at all. Look carefully at the video and you will, in fact, see at least one of the demonstrators throwing something – perhaps stones – back over the fence at the soldiers … and they (the soldiers) did not respond with lethal force.

Again, I’m not defending the Israelis – I’m merely saying that this could have turned into a much uglier video had another commander been at that checkpoint. Why poke a sleeping lion if you suspect it may not have any teeth – it still has claws? Nu? How much do you think the IOF need by way of activity to call it “provocation” and rationalize the use of lethal force? Not much more than was shown on the video based on past acts of terror, I’m certain.

Wake up and smell the kefir, this is a war largely based on stupidity – if you are stupid enough to challenge an armed person (of either side) and you get shot at (if not killed) how can you be incredulous to the fact that this act took place?

At one point it is heard that the man with the flag is calling out “intifada” to the soldiers – do you think that sounds like a provocation to Israelis standing guard at a checkpoint (regardless of the moral rights involved, there were there). Perhaps you were hoping for someone more blind and naive to jump onto the bandwagon, but that’s not the way I was raised – I was raised to examine a situation using critical thinking and analysis: if it looks like a duck and acts like a duck but claims to be a turkey, well … you can’t be sure it’s not a turkey until you let it prove itself to you. Looks can be deceiving, so can “YouTube” videos … and yes, by the way, in the past people with cameras have carried out violent acts – the cameras were only props, being used to help them get close to targets.

Ducks do not always look like ducks and terrorists do not always look like some wild-eyed guy carrying an AK-47 with a vest made of C-4 strapped to his chest; those guys all went up in smoke a long time ago (not much of a career move after the first day on the job).

If you are so eager to believe everything you see on video I’m sure you can find a nice documentary explaining the realities of the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” … even though it was debunked a century ago – it lives forever in the lies published online. Does that change the facts? For some people without the capacity to think for themselves, perhaps – but they are the same people that believed that Barack Obama was (is) a Muslim and a terrorist (because of his religion). Right.
