Archbishop Desmond Tutu to UC Berkeley:
divesting is the right thing to do

Desmond TutuSent from Emily Schaeffer, human rights lawyer in Israel/Palestine, who asked Archbishop Tutu to write the letter.

It was with great joy that I learned of your recent 16-4 vote in support of divesting your university’s money from companies that enable and profit from the injustice of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land and violation of Palestinian human rights. Principled stands like this, supported by a fast growing number of US civil society organizations and people of conscience, including prominent Jewish groups, are essential for a better world in the making, and it is always an inspiration when young people lead the way and speak truth to power.

I am writing to tell you that, despite what detractors may allege, you are doing the right thing. You are doing the moral thing. You are doing that which is incumbent on you as humans who believe that all people have dignity and rights, and that all those being denied their dignity and rights deserve the solidarity of their fellow human beings.

I have been to the Ocupied Palestinian Territory, and I have witnessed the racially segregated roads and housing that reminded me so much of the conditions we experienced in South Africa under the racist system of Apartheid. I have witnessed the humiliation of Palestinian men, women, and children made to wait hours at Israeli military checkpoints routinely when trying to make the most basic of trips to visit relatives or attend school or college, and this humiliation is familiar to me and the many black South Africans who were corralled and regularly insulted by the security forces of the Apartheid government.

In South Africa, we could not have achieved our freedom and just peace without the help of people around the world, who through the use of non-violent means, such as boycotts and divestment, encouraged their governments and other corporate actors to reverse decades-long support for the Apartheid regime. Students played a leading role in that struggle, and I write this letter with a special indebtedness to your school, Berkeley, for its pioneering role in advocating equality in South Africa and promoting corporate ethical and social responsibility to end complicity in Apartheid. I visited your campus in the 1980’s and was touched to find students sitting out in the baking sunshine to demonstrate for the University’s disvestment in companies supporting the South African regime.

The same issue of equality is what motivates the divestment movement of today, which tries to end Israel’s 43 year long occupation and the unequal treatment of the Palestinian people by the Israeli government ruling over them. The abuses they face are real, and no person should be offended by principled, morally consistent, non-violent acts to oppose them. It is no more wrong to call out Israel in particular for its abuses than it was to call out the Apartheid regime in particular for its abuses.

To those who wrongly accuse you of unfairness or harm done to them by this call for divestment, I suggest, with humility, that the harm suffered from being confronted with opinions that challenge one’s own pales in comparison to the harm done by living a life under occupation and daily denial of basic rights and dignity. It is not with rancor that we criticize the Israeli government, but with hope, a hope that a better future can be made for both Israelis and Palestinians, a future in which both the violence of the occupier and the resulting violent resistance of the occupied come to an end, and where one people need not rule over another, engendering suffering, humiliation, and retaliation. True peace must be anchored in justice and an unwavering commitment to universal rights for all humans, regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, national origin or any other identity attribute. You, students, are helping to pave that path to a just peace. I heartily endorse your divestment vote and encourage you to stand firm on the side of what is right,

God bless you richly,

Desmond Tutu
Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town.

On March 18, UC Berkeley’s student senate voted 16 to 4 to divest from General Electric and United Technologies because of their role in harming civilians as part of Israel’s illegal occupation and the attack on Gaza.

A week later, the Senate president vetoed the bill despite a massive outpouring of support for divestment.

But the final decision will be made TODAY, Wednesday April 14 at 7pm PST, when the veto can be overturned with just 14 votes.

The bill’s opponents have been waging a fierce campaign of misinformation, including a closed door meeting with the Israeli Consulate General where student senators were actually told that massive Jewish criticism of Israeli human rights violations is a cultural pathology. The senators have also been flooded with letters and we’ve now heard that Alan Dershowitz may be on campus.

That’s why we’re asking you to email the UC Berkeley senators to let them know why you support divestment and why they should overturn the veto.

PLEASE click here to write your letter now, in your own words. The whole world is watching.

It truly is time for all hands on deck!

Thanks to Archbishop Desmond Tutu for his support of the Berkley UC vote for BDS against Israel. One of his assertions needs to be reinforced to show his love and reasoning for such support of the College BDS against Israel…..

This is NOT rancor, but rather deep and abiding love. Perhaps the love is not understood by Alan Dershowitz or many radical zionists but it should be felt because it is reality that fosters love, not arrogance or rigid dogmatic hatespeak which emanates from the Zionist Organization of America, the ZOA.

I am a fly on many walls in the world of the ZOA. Not a happy job for me of course, but someone must monitor the Pam Gellers, Geert Wilders and Morton Kleins associated with the Chabad Lubavitcher movment funded and run by zionist hard right wing radicals.

Often my ears blister and eyes burn from such rantings as come from the mouths of the ZOA, which is the backer of the Netenyahu regime in Israel and the author of his criminal policies such as ethnic cleansing in East Jerusalem, assasinations of suspected detractors of Israel and the ruinous home demolitions in Palestine by the IDF.

Morton Kleins group funds settlements, illegally, funds bribes of US lawmakers, funds the assaults on reason of Joe Leiberman, Avidor Leiberman and the Chabad’s blasphemous assaults on Nuetra Karta, Yisrael Dovid Weiss;s great group of Orthodox Progressives by calling them self hating Jews.

Klein’s way of life is to give awards for hatred, lies and bribes and I see nothing to love there and also see a work the defeats the self determination sought by Jews.

I love Jews, Love Palestinians, Love people in general and wish to see and build peace between them all as a lifetime ambition, Desmond Tutu is the embodiment of this wish and his call for support for the UC Berkley students is a measure of his abiding and deep love for all of humanity and the Berkly students see this for what it is, at least most of them.

So this is NOT hatred of Israel, nobody is advocating wiping anyone off the map here, this is love.

Tough love is what Israel needs. Having every gun, missile, Ultrasonic shock weapon, Uranium laced artillery and laser guided weapon , all made in America to serve the needs of Israel has left the faith of Zionism weakened and dependent on violence to shield their criminality, occupation, murders and lies.

It is apparent that such armaments have made for a deranged regimine in Israeli affairs. This is a wealthy, heavily armed robber that needs to be talked down from the bridge, so to speak, before it leaps to it’s demise, killing others on the way down into murky waters with dangerous currents where Jews deserve not to go, having been there, wisdom is avoiding this pratfall into such troubled waters.

Please support the college BDS movements and know that this is salvation, peaceful resistance with wisdom and intelligence as it’s solid rock foundation that shows love for those entrenched in myopic and selfish arrogance, which is not self determination, but brainwashing of youth by idealogical chaos intent on promoting ethnic cleansing, genocide and occupation while uttering the unspeakably false assertion; God gave us this land.

Did God issue White Phosphorus shells that burn children’s skin or did he ask us to offer these little ones a cool and refreshing glass of water?

The link does not work. I’d say more, but the previous commenter used up the words that I wanted to use (not in the order they would have been used, alas … he just used them up).

I’ve always wondered about these surreptitious ‘organizations’ – now the ZOA – the Zionist Organization of America … is that like the American chapter of the WZO – the World Zionist Organization? or the NWZO – the New World Zionist Organization, the group heralding the installation of the New World Order – bet you haven’t heard about them (you know why? BECAUSE I JUST MADE IT UP!) Jesus in a Hand Bag! What about the Zionist Media Consortium – the ZMC – that secretly holds a controlling interest in every media outlet that’s worth controlling … oh, wait … I made up that one as well … sorry (actually, I’m not – if you believe in any of these, SEEK HELP: novel anti-psychotics can help with this delusional thinking).

You see, this stuff is too stupid to suffer – if you have a few active brain cells and an active imagination (and trust me, I have a migraine right now that would send many to cut their wrists in the search for relief) it’s more than easy enough to come up with enough conspiracy crap to twist your nose-hairs … but to what end?

The acts of the Zionists in Israel are bad enough that we don’t have to manufacture a bunch of crap that has nothing to do with reality but only serves to perpetuate a bunch of racist stereotypes that are unrelated to Zionism. We would be far better off spending our time focusing on the facts rather than worrying about these things that have nothing to do with issues that are completely unfounded in reality and only fuel the fires that Zionists will use to claim as being aimed at them and being racially oriented. We do not need to give the Zionists ammunition – it’s bad enough the west supports them already.

    Wie viel ist Aufzuleiden!

When God replies is never too soon or too late. I remember the Good Friday of 1976 in St Bernard Mzeki Anglican Church. We were expecting to hear 7words at the Cross by Bishop Tutu. He was telling us about his prophecy.THE RAINBOW NATION’ It was like a story. Three months later we experience RIOTS. Many people died in the hands of the government. God answered us in 1990. In 1994 God consolidated Tutu’s phrophecy. Will keep on praying for you. THAT WALL WILL COLLAPSE VERY SOON.

As primary victims in the Hitler frenzy, Israel had
sympathy of the politically concerned world.
In reccent years it has lost respect gradually through its disrespct for Palestinian rights and
humanity-ignoring its lessons learned and adopting
the habits of an abuser. Stern reminders must be
offered by world leadership, to protect the abused
Occupatioon, restore Justice, and bring Israel into
    happier relationship with its neighbors.
Thank God for Bishop Tutu’s leadership!!!
