SECOND CANADIAN UNIVERSITY BANS ISRAELI APARTHEID WEEK POSTERS

Following the undemocratic banning at Carleton University, the University of Ottawa joins in banning the display. (See THIS post and THIS one) The following is a Call to Action….

University of Ottawa Bans Israeli Apartheid Week Poster
Call to Action
On February 20, 2009, the University of Ottawa became the second Ottawa
administration to ban the posters of Israeli Apartheid Week 2009, following
the lead of Carleton University in a blatant violation of free expression
for students speaking out on human rights. Like Carleton University's
administration, the University of Ottawa's Communications Office used
spurious "human rights" claims to ban the poster. The Communications
Office's short communique to Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights reads:

"A poster from the campus group Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights has
recently come to the attention of the Communications Office. All posters
approved by the Communications Office must promote a campus culture where
all members of the community can play a part in a declaration of human
rights recognizing the inherent dignity and equal rights of all students.
Consequently, we will not place this particular poster on our campus
billboards."

Please view the poster here:
http://www.apartheidweek.org/sites/apartheidweek.org/files/Israeli%20Apartheid%20Week%202009%20poster.jpg

This curt note notably fails to explain how the poster by noted cartoonist
Carlos Latuff, depicting an Israeli attack helicopter (labeled "Israel")
firing a missile at a Palestinian child (labeled "Gaza"), does not
"recognize the inherent dignity and equal rights of all students". In fact,
the banning of the poster is a failure to recognize the dignity and equal
rights of Palestinian students and those who seek to expose the violations
of human rights of Palestinians.

The poster is symbolic but it also depicts a factual situation. 430 children
were killed by the Israeli military in its latest attack on Gaza. It seems
that according to a growing number of campus administrations, depicting
these killings on a poster is some kind of human rights violation, while the
killings themselves, or the bombing of a University in Gaza, are not
(neither campus administration condemned the killings of civilians or the
bombing of the Islamic University in Gaza).

In contrast to these campus administrations, the movement for Palestinian
human rights is at the forefront of the struggle to recognize the inherent
dignity and equal rights of all students, and indeed, all people. As the
students at Carleton wrote when the poster was banned on their campus, "the
campaign is proudly anti-racist, and founded on the principles of opposition
to all forms of racism, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. It draws its
inspiration from the global campaign to end South African apartheid and is
led by many of the same individuals who were at the forefront of that
earlier struggle."

We present the same demands to the University of Ottawa as the students at
Carleton University demanded of their administration:

1. Immediately lift the ban on the Israeli Apartheid Week poster and
publicly apologize for the banning.

2. Explain, publicly and precisely, how the profound error of banning the
poster was made and address how to prevent such violations from occurring in
future.

3. Sponsor a full public debate--ensuring generous access to the entire
university community--on the University of Ottawa's position on the proposed
institutional boycott of Israeli academic institutions.

4. Appoint a university/community Commission to investigate the record of
the University in relation to democratic discourse and equity around issues
of Palestine solidarity.

We call on student organizations, social justice groups and concerned
individuals around the world to support students at the University of Ottawa
and the broader fight for freedom of expression.

Please take the following actions:
* Email/Fax/Call the President of the University of Ottawa, Allan Rock,
demanding that he immediately restore the Charter rights of students and
send a copy of your message of support to the Director of the Communications
Office, Andree Dumulon. Please send a copy of your letter to

This is becoming a nightmare! An absolute nightmare. Is Canada turning into the bloody (literally) Fourth Reich? Well, another letter to put together in the morning. This is just plain WRONG!

Notice both are in Ottawa, the capital city of Canada. Where many Israeli diplomats might be hanging. No matter, it is wrong, it is suppression, it is the ADL and Bn’ai Brith.

As an alumnus of the University of Ottawa I am ashamed of this cowardly policy; there has never been a question of allowing the Zionist students their right to demonstrate (there is a small, but vocal, Jewish Student organization on campus, or at least there was one twenty years ago, when I was a student there).

The problem with UofO is that it has this perverse idea that it can be all things to everyone, so long as it pursues the most ‘middle of the road’ policies regarding controversial issues and doesn’t take a stance on something that could (G-d forbid) offend someone. Unfortunately, as we see here, this policy is doomed to failure for the simple reason that there are things happening in the world that just do not fit into the antiseptic world of academic purity; you cannot ‘study’ war, apartheid, poverty, and all of the other things associated with contemporary genocide without getting your hands (and spirit) dirty.

Doubtless the University of Ottawa came to the realization that there likely would have been a large backlash during the Apartheid Week that could easily be construed as anti-Semitism as it would be directed against Israel. We must convey the message, as often as possible, that being against the racist, genocidal and illegal (according to the United Nations and the World Court) actions of the ‘State of Israel’ has nothing to do with being an individual who is anti-Semitic. Being opposed to Zionist colonialism has nothing to do with hating or loving Jews, it has everything to do with the respect for human rights and the belief that there is – and must be – a better way for all people to live.

The time has come for the world to wake up to the fact that it is simply unreasonable for Zionism to be allowed to enslave another people, evicting them from their homes with violent force when no crime – unless trying to scratch out a meaker existance can be construed as a criminal act – to the point of death, If the examples that have been passed on to the west from dedicated reporters in the occupied territories tell even one-tenth of the story there is so much more going on than just apartheid; people are fighting a losing battle for their lives, and we must do whatever we can to stop this crime from being completed before our eyes.

I pray that the Rector of the University of Ottawa would be swayed by the need to see the truth represented on the campus; to see an honest debate take place, a debate and discussion that would demonstrate that the position of the ‘defense’ of the nation (through apartheid and genocide) is nothing but a smokescreen for the Zionist plan to drive those who do not conform to the Judaic ideal (Herr Liebermann?) out of the nation completely.

Good luck, Ottawa … I’ll see you there ~

Just cracking out my addition of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms under Section 2. Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:
    (a) freedom of conscience and religion;
    (b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion, and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;
    (c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and
    (d) freedom of association

Zionists with the passing of the Patriot Act tried to drown out all dissent and take away all rights to free speech that we as individuals rightly have.

Only under the threat of injury, these jack booted tactics have only re-inforced a key facet of life: That each of us is free, is a sovereign man or woman; and that each of us owns those inalienable rights and rights to defend them against all enemies or encroachment of that freedom.

The World Zionist organization laughs at this idea, but it is true, as countless court cases have begun to show. We own our rights to self determination. No other authority doth own it, neither the heads of state or dictators up on high whom profess the indoctrination of Zionism.

The Nazis banned all paraphernalia of the White Rose dissident group during the 1940s; interesting company the University of Ottawa decided to keep…

Canada does not owe Israel anything.
Better yet, what has Israel done for us except buy up and keep in-line it’s money makers.

Why should Canadian’s risk lives to please a people that really has no respect for human life? She uses the past to justify the means, and loves rubbing into the worlds’ face her endless double standard and “Fuck-You!!” attitude.

Still , somehow Israel can make the claim that God wants her to ignore his Commandments and inspire hatred of the followers of God’s most divine creation, Jesus.
Israeli jews seem to have forgotten just how many times God has punished the little spoiled brat.

NEITHER OF THE U OF O ADDRESSES ARE VALID. WELL THEY ARE BUT YOU HAVE TO BE LOGGED IN TO ACCESS THEM. AND IF YOU ATTEMPT ANYTHING WITH THAT, YOU STILL GO NOWHERE.

ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO REACH ROCK?

CANADIANS ARE NOT IMPRESSED WITH THESE PEOPLE. NOT AT ALL.

How does a poster that points to the truth of the matter so well get banned? This is just so outrageous. Keep up the struggle for Palestinian rights in Canada.
You should start some sit-ins at your universities like the UK students who have had great successes to date with many scholarships being won, among other things, for Palestinians.
