THE MOTHERLAND CALLS

In the summer of 1978 I visited the Soviet Union. I visited the city of Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad), the scene of the fiercest battle against the nazis during WW2.

We were taken to a hill where thousands of soldiers and civilians lie buried. At the top of the hill stood the most magnificent statue I ever saw in my life. (See THIS related post)

The Motherland calls

Last Thursday night I was presented with a foot high duplicate of this beautiful statue from a close friend that lives in Moscow.

International Women’s Day came early to my home this year. To me, this statue represents the strength and beauty of all women throughout the world.

To the Motherland!

THE OCTOPUS OF FASCISM

I don’t know how many years from now the Israeli government would  appoint an inquiry commission to look into the reasons that made the Israeli society succumb to the Octopus of fascism. But it would  probably be too late by then, as too much tears and blood would have been already shed.

In Israel: fascism is clear and clarion

By Khalid Amayreh
*
I have been engaging Israeli-Jewish back-talkers and commentators on the websites of several mainstream Israeli newspapers and media outlets.  The often heated exchanges revealed the extent to which fascism, fanaticism, racism, and bigotry have penetrated the collective inner-psyche and mindset of the Israeli-Jewish society.

I have always argued, at this forum and elsewhere, that the Israeli Jewish society is drifting rather phenomenally toward ugly racism and fascism. After this latest encounter with the cyberspace guardians of the sacrosanct Golem (Israel), I feel quite shocked by the absolute veracity of my erstwhile assumptions.

The mostly irate commentators and back-talkers on the websites of Israeli media outlets seem to represent a significant cross-section of the Israeli-Jewish society.  I wouldn’t exaggerate if I said these people represent the views of the overwhelming majority of Israeli Jews, especially with regard to the conflict with the Palestinians..
Upon thoroughly examining their messages, I noticed that these people are quite saturated with bigotry and harbor a very high degree of real fascism. For example, most of these people wouldn’t accept the principle of simple human equality.  Moreover, I noticed that they tend to be quite abusive in their discourse as they routinely and heavily used name-calling and personal ad hominem attacks instead of logical argumentation and debate.

They profusely used strong epithets like “Nazi” to describe and malign critics of Israel and its policies.
When I confronted them with passages from the Torah supporting human equality, they either rejected these passages outright or twisted their meaning to suit their racist convictions.

Moreover, I noticed that they referred to all Muslims as “Islamo-Nazis,” with many of them even calling for a world-wide genocide that wouldn’t leave a Muslim alive.

One back-talker, a recent immigrant to Israel from Minneapolis remarked that “Nazism was evil only because it targeted Jews…..otherwise Nazism would have been a lovely thing if it had exterminated six million Muslims.”!

When delving into religion, I noticed that Israeli Jewish back-talkers employed a particularly filthy language against the symbols and followers of other religions. For them all Muslims are “terrorists” to be annihilated, Muhammed is the greatest terrorist! Jesus was the ultimate bastard and Mary the ultimate whore!!  The venomous hatred and abuse reserved for Muslims and, to a lesser extent, Christians,   prompts one to conclude that these Jews are the greatest asset for anti-Semites in our time.

Predictably, most Israeli Jewish back-talkers and commentators held criminally racist perceptions of Palestinians whom they thought ought to be either  banished to Arabia, enslaved by the Jews, or physically exterminated.

Those who advocated the  genocidal solution for the Palestinian problem argued that the world would soon forget afterward!  Interestingly, Issues like human life, human rights and international law were meaningless to them.

I argued with a Jewish settler from Kiryat Arba near Hebron, also an immigrant from North America, that murdering innocent people was a gross violation of the Ten Commandments. He retorted rather confidently: “You want to teach me my scripture! Thou shall not murder means thou shall not murder a Jew.”!

“But the best of non-Jews, kill’em”

Having undergone this experience, I have gained a better and more accurate understanding of Zeev Sernhell’s  treatise  that Israel today resembles to a large extent Nazi Germany in its earlier years.

I don’t know how many years from now the Israeli government would  appoint an inquiry commission to look into the reasons that made the Israeli society succumb to the Octopus of fascism. But it would  probably be too late by then, as too much tears and blood would have been already shed.

AN ISSUE FINALLY COMES TO LIGHT IN ISRAELI ELECTION CAMPAIGN

RACISM

Surprised? You shouldn’t be as it was raised and defended by fascist candidate Baruch Marzel.

“We came here to say we’re devoted and committed to continue the battle till the last illegal resident from Africa will (go) back to his home in Africa,” said Marzel.

When asked about allegations of “racism” being leveled by leftist sources against the struggle with illegal immigration, he remarked “if saving the state of Israel from millions of Africans coming in and destroying the state of Israel is racism, that is the problem of (those) saying it. I’m fighting for the existence of my country.”

If anyone is an illegal immigrant it’s Marzel himself, a founding member of an outlawed terrorist organisation on both sides of the pond.

#IsraeliElectionUpdates ~~ FASCISM BACKFIRES

Earlier today One of the Palestinian candidates was barred from running in the upcoming election. Hanin Zoabi was barred for doing what she was mandated to do in the last election, provide a voice for the voiceless in Israel.

The move to ban her came after a petition was submitted to the Central Election Committee by fascist candidate Baruch Marzel. By mid afternoon, he too was barred from running. Both sides of the House, the Right and the ‘Left’ expressed support for the decisions, both fearing that votes would be ‘stolen’ by Zoabi’s candidacy as well as that of Marzel’s.

Looks good when it backfires in their own face

Looks good when it backfires in their own face

In the previous election Zoabi was also barred from running but the decision was reversed by the Attorney General and the Supreme Court. Hopefully this action will be repeated leaving Marzel out in the cold where he belongs, before going to the depths of a very hot hell.

HaAretz reported the following regarding these decisions ….

Israel Election Updates / Israeli Arab MK Zoabi, rightist Baruch Marzel disqualified from Knesset run

32 days to go: Despite AG’s declaration, Herzog and Livni to support petitions to disqualify Balad MK Haneen Zoabi.

Latest political summary: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that he will not decide on participating in a pre-election debate with other candidates until after he returns from his trip to the U.S.; Israel’s attorney general declares there is no reason to disqualify MK Haneen Zoabi from running for Knesset.

Central Elections Committee disqualifies candidacy of rightist Baruch Marzel. The decision will be appealed to High Court.

In response to efforts to end his candidacy, Marzel wrote on Facebook early Thursday that despite opposition of “Arab MKs, friends of the enemy, and their leftist partners,” he “will be in the next Knesset.” (Haaretz)

1:10 P.M. Elections committee disqualifies MK Haneen Zoabi from election

The Central Elections Committee accepted petitions filed by Yisrael Beiteinu and Likud party to disqualify Israeli Arab MK Haneen Zoabi from running for a seat in the next Knesset.

Salim Joubran, who heads the CEC and is the only Arab justice on the panel, condemned committee votes such as this one that are likely to be overturned by the supreme court. “This respects neither the committee, nor the supreme court,” he said.

Israel’s attorney-general earlier advised against disqualifying Zoabi. Although some of her statements were radical and “worrying,” there was insufficient proof that she supported an armed struggle against Israel – grounds for disqualification under Israeli law.

The committee will rule later Thursday on a petition to disqualify rightist Baruch Marzel from running as well. (Jonathan Lis)

11:00 A.M. Zoabi speaks at elections committee hearing to disqualify her candidacy

“Lieberman and Levin use partial quotes to say that I support armed struggle, but they’ve never been able to use any quotes from me to show that I support armed struggle. I’ve been quoted as supporting popular struggle, which I do. Popular struggle as well as international pressure are legitimate methods,” said Zoabi.

“I connect violence to occupation. The occupation is the source of the cycle of blood,” said Zoabi. (Jonathan Lis)

9:30 A.M Zionist Union decides to support bid to disqualify Zoabi

Zionist Union leaders Isaac Herzog and Tzipi Livni have decided, ultimately, to support the bid to disqualify Balad MK Haneen Zoabi’s candidacy for the Knesset in the upcoming elections. Their decision was made despite Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein’s statement against the disqualification bid.

The petitions to disqualify Zoabi are expected to receive majority support within the Central Elections Committee on Thursday, even without support from the Zionist Union. The Supreme Court, however, is likely to overturn any decision to disqualify Zoabi.

The Zionist Union will also support the disqualification of the extreme right-winger Baruch Marzel. In response to efforts to end his candidacy, Marzel wrote on Facebook that despite opposition of “Arab MKs, friends of the enemy, and their leftist partners,” he “will be in the next Knesset.” (Jonathan Lis)

Their plans were put to rest when one of the Palestinian Members of Knesset, Ahmad Tibi, appealed this decision to the Central Elections Committee.

Lieberman’s party activists responded with “We were astounded to learn that the Central Elections Committee acceded to MK Ahmad Tibi’s request to stop the distribution of copies of Charlie Hebdo,” the petition read. “This is a serious blow to the freedom of expression. It’s capitulation to radical Islamic terrorism and its representatives in the Knesset.”

THE HOLOCAUST WAS NOT ‘KOSHER’ IN HOLLYWOOD DURING HITCHCOCK’S TIME

These were 'OK' BUT ...

These were ‘OK’ BUT …

Just as films depicting the suffering of the Palestinian people are not on Hollywood’s ‘must see listings’, the European Holocaust was treated the same way in 1945. That is until last night when a documentary by Alfred Hitchock showing the horrors of the Holocaust finally sees the light of day on Tuesday night – 70 years after it was made and shelved for political reasons. The documentary is the focus of a new film by director Andre Singer, called “Night Will Fall”, which was to be aired around the world by HBO on Tuesday night to mark International Holocaust Memorial Day.

Hitchcock’s Holocaust documentary finally sees light of day

Newly restored documentary made in 1945 using footage of the camps filmed by British and Soviet troops was originally shelved ‘for political reasons’.

Ynetnews

A documentary by Alfred Hitchock showing the horrors of the Holocaust finally sees the light of day on Tuesday night – 70 years after it was made and shelved for political reasons. The documentary is the focus of a new film by director Andre Singer, called “Night Will Fall”, which was to be aired around the world by HBO on Tuesday night to mark International Holocaust Memorial Day.

Hitchcock’s documentary, entitled “German Concentration Camps Factual Survey”, was made using footage taken by British and Soviet soldiers, including during the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. It had been commissioned with the intention of showing it to the German people to inform them what the Nazis had done during the Holocaust.

Dr. Toby Haggith, senior curator at the Imperial War Museum, told the Independent newspaper that, “Once they discovered the camps, the Americans and British were keen to release a film very quickly that would show the camps and get the German people to accept their responsibility for the atrocities that were there.”

But, added Haggith, “It was suppressed because of the changing political situation, particularly for the British.” The emphasis had shifted to reconstruction, not retribution, he said.

The Imperial War Museum in London, where five of the six reels of the film had been stored, has now carefully restored the documentary using digital technology. A partially complete version of the film was screened at the 1984 Berlin Film Festival entitled “Memory of the Camps”.

According to the Independent, Hitchcock was traumatized when he first saw the footage, that he stayed away from Pinewood Studios in London for a week.

“Night Will Fall” (a line from the Hitchcock documentary: “Unless the world learns the lessons these pictures teach, night will fall”) is narrated by Helena Bonham Carter and combines the original 1945 footage with contemporary interviews with the people involved in making that documentary.

The restored original documentary was also set to be shown on British TV. “Night Will Fall” aired on Britain’s Channel 4 last Saturday night.

UNITED FRONT AGAINST ZIONISM

Fascism-no-pasaran

Sometimes repeating history is a positive thing …

In the summer of 1935, the leader of the Bulgarian Communist Party, Georgi Dimitrov, delivered a speech calling for a united front against fascism in Europe. Today, on a smaller scale that is what is happening in Israel as the Palestinian parties, including Hadash, finally agreed to run on a united list in the upcoming election.

It was the Moldavian fascist, Avigdor Lieberman, whose calls to force these parties out of the Knesset altogether that resulted in this united front against zionism.

The Government Act passed in March 2014 raised the election threshold for political parties from 2% percent to 3.25 percent (about four seats), adding an impetus for parties that might no longer be eligible to unite.

After the Knesset officially disbanded in December, MK Tibi said that “Lieberman, who raised the electoral threshold, wants to force the Arab parties out of the Knesset,” and that this called for a united list.

Arab parties to run as one list in upcoming elections

After weeks of discussions, politicians agree to run together; move follows earlier passing of law to raise election threshold.

The Arab factions in the Knesset will run together on a united list, it was announced Thursday after serious political arguments that occurred over the last month.

An external committee was appointed by the Arab parties to deal with uniting the factions and forming a list.

The committee held meetings over the last few days in Kafr Qara in the Wadi Ara area. The meetings all went on for over five hours.

The most dramatic meeting occurred on Thursday, when arguments escalated into shouting over the list’s composition. Some participants walked out of the talks in anger, returning only after dignitaries intervened.

Hadash and Balad held their primaries on January 17. Arguments broke out among Hadash delegates after the party’s chairman, MK Mohammad Barakeh, announced officially that he would not run in the upcoming election, as some supported his decision while others opposed it.

The members finally arrived at the following list:

1. Aiman Uda (Hadash)

2. Masud Ganaim (Islamic Movement)

3. Jamal Zahalka (Balad)

4. Ahmad Tibi (UAL-Ta’al)

5. Aida Touma-Sliman (Hadash)

6. Abd al-Hakim Hajj Yahya (Islamic Movement)

7. Hanin Zoabi (Balad)

8. Dov Khenin (Hadash)

9. Taleb Abu Arar (Islamic Movement)

10. Basel Ghattas (Balad)

11. Yosef Jabareen (Hadash)

12. UAL-Ta’al – Balad (rotation)

13. Hadash – Balad (rotation)

14. Hadash – Balad (rotation)

In December, MK Zoabi called for the creation of the united list, saying it would raise Arab representation from 11 to 16 seats.

A poll that same month said almost half of Israeli-Arabs wanted MK Ahmed Tibi to lead a united Arab faction, and found that 62 percent of Israeli Arabs planned to vote in the upcoming elections, compared to 56 percent who voted in 2013, and 53 percent who voted in 2009.

SONY DSC

Under the NYC night sky at 6:30 pm, 10,000 (police report) people gathered at Foley Square to protest the failure of the Grand Jury to indict the killer policeman of Eric Gardner, a Black resident from Staten Island . The demonstration was called  by the NYC Civil Liberties Union and The Center For Constitutional Rights. The meeting was peaceful, but participants were angry. The meeting represented the wide range of ethnic and racial population in NYC, from the young to oldsters. “BLACK LIFE MATTERS” and “I CAN’T BREATHE” were the refrains which filled Foley Square as well as “NO PEACE WITH OUT JUSTICE” and “HANDS UP DON’T SHOOT” (referring to Ferguson  Mo). Within  hours people spontaneously began to leave the Square to circulate through the city.  Local street protests continued to the wee hours of the morning.  The Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges were closed down.  The Holland Tunnel was closed for forty  minutes.  In some streets traffic was blocked and “die-ins” on the streets helped block the traffic. There were masses of police with their patrol cars  and scooters and their  buses to hold arrested demonstrators (200 were arrested).

The tactics used by the demonstrators were very familiar to those who participated in the Civil Rights Movement of the 60’s.

It is unfortunate that people are still marching for what should have been achieved more  than a half a century ago.

NEW ARYAN STATE LAW = NEW WAVE OF BOOK BURNING

Russian books set on fire outside Beit El synagogue, with graffiti stating: ‘Where Nationality Laws are passed, books will be burned.’

Unknown perpetrators burned books near a synagogue in Tel Aviv on Sunday evening in a protest against the “Nationality Law.”

Worshipers arriving for evening prayers at the Beit El synagogue on Frishman Street found some 10 burned books outside the synagogue, with graffiti against the contentious bill proposal sprayed on the synagogue’s outer wall.

Rabbi Ariel Constantine, who runs the synagogue on behalf of the Tzohar organization, said the books were in Russian so it is yet unclear whether these were holy books or regular ones, and whether or not they were taken from inside the synagogue, which is attended by worshipers from different countries. The graffiti on the wall read: “Where Nationality Laws are passed, books will be burned,” a play on a quote by German romantic poet Heinrich Heine who said: “Where they have burned books, they will end in burning human beings.”

“In my opinion, this is a response to what’s going on in Jerusalem,” the rabbi said, referring to the arson at a Jewish-Arab school in Jerusalem on Saturday night. He said the worshipers were surprised of the act of vandalism, noting this was a “modern” synagogue that accepts anyone who wishes to pray.”We had MKs Dov Dov Khenin (Hadash) and Avishay Braverman (Labor), as well as Ayelet Shaked (Bayit Yehudi) and Ofir Akunis (Likud),” Constantine said. “We welcome everyone, we don’t deserve what has been done to us.”
Tzohar director Rabbi David Stav added: “I’m shocked by this, and without pointing an accusatory finger at any direction, I call on leaders from the right and left to iron out the issues in the Nationality Law in a calm and responsible manner, without harsh criticism.”
Police opened an investigation into the incident.

WATCH LIVE ~~ ISRAELI ‘DEMOCRACY’ IN ACTION

If the sandal fits, wear it!

If the sandal fits, wear it!

Duly elected Israeli officials can say whatever they want to on the Knesset Floor …..

UNLESS IT’S THE TRUTH!

Watch below the name calling drama yesterday …. it’s in Hebrew but an explanation follows VIA

Watch the video above from the 2:05 mark.

A Palestinian Knesset member, Jamal Zahalka (Balad), was forcibly removed from the podium and dragged out of the Knesset plenary today after he called Moshe Feiglin (Likud) a fascist.

Some parliament members have protested against the move. They stood up, yelling at Feiglin, who served as the Speaker of the Knesset for the day and made this call. When Zahalka was nearly outside of the plenary, Feiglin said he only meant for him to be removed off the stand. Zahalka was still escorted out but got back in a brief moment later to join the protest that had erupted and resulted in chaos.

Zahalka’s speech was about the new nationality law which, if passed, would define the state of Israel primarily as “the national homeland of the Jewish people” instead of “Jewish and democratic.”

Zahalka, chairman of the Balad party, quoted the Jewish philosopher Hannah Arendt and said that she criticized the idea of a national homeland for the Jewish people in 1941 when she argued that this would make the Palestinians second-class citizens.

After Feiglin, who refuses to acknowledge there are Palestinian people, interrupted with questions about his sources and exact terminology, Zahalka told him: “I suggest you read her. Of course you are in an opposite world from hers… She was anti-Nazism, anti-fascism — and you are a fascist.”

Feiglin ordered him to end his speech promptly, and when Zahalka refused, Feiglin called the security guards.

BELLA CIAO GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ

Like many Latin American writers, Garcia Marquez transcended the world of letters. He became a hero to the Latin American left as an early ally of Cuba’s revolutionary leader Fidel Castro and a critic of Washington’s interventions from Vietnam to Chile. His affable visage, set off by a white mustache and bushy grey eyebrows, was instantly recognizable. Peres eulogizes Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez

President says author, who died at the age of 87, ‘expressed great interest’ in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

*

President Shimon Peres eulogized Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez who passed away on Thursday afternoon at the age of 87.

“The world will feel the loss of a great dreamer, who told both children and us adults, in such a beautiful manner, about life’s truths,” Peres wrote.

In his statement, the president told of his meeting with the acclaimed author in Marquez’s home country of Colombia.

(Photo: AFP)
(Photo: AFP)

Marquez, Peres said, “expressed great interest” in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

The literary giant wished for Middle East peace, Peres said, and said that until peace is achieved “my heart will remain broken and I will pray every day for the realization of the dream of peace.”

One of the most revered and influential writers of his generation, Marquez brought Latin America’s charm and maddening contradictions to life in the minds of millions and became the best-known practitioner of “magical realism,” a blending of fantastic elements into portrayals of daily life that made the extraordinary seem almost routine.

Known to millions simply as “Gabo,” Garcia Marquez was widely seen as the Spanish language’s most popular writer since Miguel de Cervantes in the 17th century. His extraordinary literary celebrity spawned comparisons with Mark Twain and Charles Dickens.

(Photo: AFP)
(Photo: AFP)

His flamboyant and melancholy works – among them “Chronicle of a Death Foretold,” `’Love in the Time of Cholera” and “The Autumn of the Patriarch” – outsold everything published in Spanish except the Bible. The epic 1967 novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude” sold more than 50 million copies in more than 25 languages.

The first sentence of “One Hundred Years of Solitude” has become one of the most famous opening lines of all time: “Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice.”

(Photo: AP)
(Photo: AP)

With writers including Norman Mailer and Tom Wolfe, Garcia Marquez was also an early practitioner of the literary nonfiction that would become known as New Journalism. He became an elder statesman of Latin American journalism, with magisterial works of narrative non-fiction that included the “Story of A Shipwrecked Sailor,” the tale of a seaman lost on a life raft for 10 days. He was also a scion of the region’s left.

Shorter pieces dealt with subjects including Venezuela’s larger-than-life president, Hugo Chavez, while the book “News of a Kidnapping” vividly portrayed how cocaine traffickers led by Pablo Escobar had shred the social and moral fabric of his native Colombia, kidnapping members of its elite. In 1994, Garcia Marquez founded the Iberoamerican Foundation for New Journalism, which offers training and competitions to raise the standard of narrative and investigative journalism across Latin America.

But for so many inside and outside the region, it was his novels that became synonymous with Latin America itself.

“The world has lost one of its greatest visionary writers – and one of my favorites from the time I was young,” President Barack Obama said.

When he accepted the Nobel prize in 1982, Garcia Marquez described the region as a “source of insatiable creativity, full of sorrow and beauty, of which this roving and nostalgic Colombian is but one cipher more, singled out by fortune. Poets and beggars, musicians and prophets, warriors and scoundrels, all creatures of that unbridled reality, we have had to ask but little of imagination, for our crucial problem has been a lack of conventional means to render our lives believable.”

“From the time I read `One Hundred Years of Solitude’ more than 40 years ago, I was always amazed by his unique gifts of imagination, clarity of thought, and emotional honesty,” Clinton said Thursday. “I was honored to be his friend and to know his great heart and brilliant mind for more than 20 years.”

Garcia Marquez was born in Aracataca, a small Colombian town near the Caribbean coast on March 6, 1927. He was the eldest of the 11 children of Luisa Santiaga Marquez and Gabriel Elijio Garcia, a telegraphist and a wandering homeopathic pharmacist who fathered at least four children outside of his marriage.

Over 1,000 rabbis urge Jerusalem mayor not to pick Islamophobe for chief rabbi

Over 1,000 liberal Diaspora rabbis have appealed to Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat not to appoint Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu as the capital’s chief Sephardi rabbi, citing his history of anti-Arab remarks and rulings. Reports are that Barkat is leaning toward Eliyahu for the appointment, which is being fought over by Jerusalem’s Orthodox Jewish powers.

Prominent among the rabbis signing the letter were Reform Rabbi Rick Jacobs, Conservative Rabbi Julie Schonfeld, liberal Orthodox Rabbi Asher Lopatin, Reconstructionist Rabbi Deborah Waxman and Rabbi Brian Lurie, president of the New Israel Fund.

The letter notes that Eliyahu, chief rabbi of Safed, “made a halakhic ruling barring Jews from renting apartments to Arabs, opposed military service for women, characterized Arabs and Muslims in racist and humiliating terms, while the attorney general said his candidacy for [Sephardi] chief rabbi was inappropriate.”
The rabbis told Barkat that appointing Eliyahu to the post would “send a message of divisiveness and intolerance” from Jerusalem.

In recent years, Eliyahu sought to keep Arabs from moving into Safed, whose local college has some 1,500 Arab students. He said that selling or renting homes to Arabs “is prohibited by Jewish law.”

On one occasion he was quoted as saying, “The Arab society has an agenda; they want to Islamicize the world. Arab society is, generally and without generalizations, a violent society.”

Another time he came out against girls serving in the army, saying it puts them “into inappropriate situations that harm their faith, emotions and often, sadly, their bodies.”

Eliyahu’s late father, Mordechai, was chief Sephardi rabbi of Israel and later a spiritual leader to many extremist settler youth, delivering a eulogy at Meir Kahane’s funeral.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon died Saturday after eight years in a coma at the age of 85. Sharon was one of the most dominant political figures in Israel’s history, involved in each of Israel’s major wars dating back to its founding in 1948. Among Palestinians, Sharon was one of the most reviled political figures in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He is seen as father of the settlement movement and an architect of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon that killed a reported 20,000 Palestinian and Lebanese. We discuss Sharon’s legacy with three guests: Noam Chomsky, world-renowned political dissident, linguist, author and Institute Professor Emeritus at Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Rashid Khalidi, Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies at Columbia University; and Avi Shlaim, Emeritus Professor of International Relations at Oxford University, widely regarded as one of the world’s leading scholars on the Israeli-Arab conflict. “There is a convention that you’re not supposed to speak ill of the recently dead, which unfortunately imposes a kind of vow of silence, because there is nothing good to say,” Chomsky says. “He was a brutal killer; he had one fixed idea in mind which drove him all his life — a greater Israel, as powerful as possible, as few Palestinians as possible… He doubtless showed courage and commitment to pursuing this ideal, which is an ugly and horrific one.”

WHEN NAZIS ARE REMEMBERED

DesertPeace and Associates joins the thousands of Hungarians who protested the honour bestowed on the former nazi leader of that great nation. As one whose entire family was sent to their death by this monster, it is refreshing to see that people of conscience survived the horrors.

In 1944 the Nazis occupied Hungary and with Horthy still in office about 437,000 Jews were deported over a period of 56 days, most to their deaths, according to Budapest’s Holocaust Memorial Centre. The total number of the Hungarian Jewish victims during the Holocaust exceeded half a million.

BUDAPEST — Hungary’s far-right Jobbik party unveiled a statue of wartime leader Miklos Horthy, who presided over the country’s alliance with Nazi Germany, in Budapest on Sunday, sparking protests and highlighting concerns about anti-Semitism in the country.

About a thousand Hungarians took to the streets of the capital to denounce the statue while the mayor of central Budapest and parliamentary leader of the ruling Fidesz party, Antal Rogan, warned the bust would provide an excuse to paint an unfair picture of extremism in Hungary.

Jobbik has stoked anti-semitism in the country, vilifying Jews and Israel in speeches in parliament, where it is the third-biggest party.

One of the organizers of Sunday’s ceremony was Jobbik’s deputy parliament group leader Marton Gyongyosi, who sparked outrage last year when he called for lists of people in Hungary with Jewish ancestry to be drawn up. He later apologised and said he had been misunderstood.

“As downtown mayor I consider the statue unveiling ceremony of Marton Gyongyosi a political provocation and I condemn it,” Rogan said in a statement. “This provocative action will obviously give the western European left-wing press an excuse to cry anti-Semitism and paint a malicious picture of Hungary.”

Protesters gathered in a light drizzle near a church in central Budapest where the large bronze bust of Horthy was put on display at the gates, a stone’s throw from the country’s neo-gothic Parliament building.

“It is outrageous that the new fascists erect a statue to Horthy, who is responsible for the Nazi rule and the Holocaust in Hungary,” said Bence Kovacs, a 22-year-old student who pinned a yellow Star of David to his chest in protest.

Hungary, which is struggling to return to growth after two bouts of deep recession in the wake of the global economic crisis, will hold parliamentary elections next April or May with Jobbik set to win 8-9 percent of the vote, according to latest opinion polls.

The far-right has held Horthy in high regard. He ruled Hungary for 24 years in an increasingly radical political era and, as head of state in the early years of World War II, entered an uneasy alliance with Nazi Germany.

Horthy’s role in that process has been debated but no compromise has been reached yet about his place in history. The far-right credits him with saving Hungary after the disaster of World War I, while leftists consider him a Nazi collaborator.

“To call Horthy a war criminal is unjust and historically wrong,” Jobbik representative Lorant Hegedus told Reuters after the unveiling ceremony. “He was not treated as a war criminal in Nuremberg, so why treat him like one now?”

Horthy testified as a witness at the Nuremberg trials after World War II but avoided prosecution and eventually died in exile in Portugal in 1957.

Gyongyosi told the unveiling ceremony that Horthy was the greatest Hungarian statesman of the 20th century.

FACING THE PAST

The government has said that Hungarians had a role in the Holocaust and that the country would pursue a policy of zero tolerance against racial hatred and anti-Semitism.

Hungary still has one of the largest and oldest Jewish communities in Europe, mostly in the capital.

While there is a revival of Jewish culture, the far-right has remained strong and anti-Semitism, as well as hatred toward other minorities like homosexuals or the Roma, is still a serious problem.

“We have tried and failed so many times to face our past,” said former liberal lawmaker Imre Mecs, who protested against the statue. “This must happen for us to make any progress lest we will fall further behind the rest of Europe.”

“An economy can only be built atop a sound democratic foundation,” said Mecs, 80, who said the way Germany dealt with its own past after World War II was exemplary.

On the opposite side of the square near the church, pro-Horthy supporters shouted racial and anti-Semitic slurs at the opposition protesters. Lajos Molnar, 93, waved a photograph that he claimed showed that he served in Horthy’s police during the war.

“Horthy never hurt the Jews,” Molnar said. “It was Hitler not him who deported the Jews … Without Horthy Hungary would not exist today because the great powers of the world would have destroyed it like they planned to.”

GELLER’S ISLAMOPHOBIA BANNED IN BRITAIN

Pamela Geller Barred From Britain for Anti-Muslim Rally on London Slaying

Controversial Blogger Planned To Speak at Far Right Protest

By Liam Hoare

*

LONDON — Pamela Geller, the controversial anti-Islam blogger and activist infamous for her staunch criticism and denigration of Islam, has been banned from entering the United Kingdom by Home Secretary Theresa May.

In a two-page letter which Geller uploaded onto her blog, Atlas Shrugs, the Home Office informed Geller that has been “excluded from the UK” on the basis that her “presence here would not be conducive to the public good.” Her previous history indicated to the Home Secretary that Geller may attempt to “foster hatred which might lead to inter-community violence in the UK.”

Below the letter in her blogpost, Geller reacted to the decision:

In a striking blow against freedom, the British government has banned us from entering the country. Muhammad al-Arifi, who has advocated Jew-hatred, wife-beating, and jihad violence, entered the U.K. recently with no difficulty. In not allowing us into the country solely because of our true and accurate statements about Islam, the British government is behaving like a de facto Islamic state. The nation that gave the world the Magna Carta is dead.

Geller and her co-founder of Stop Islamisation of America (SIOA), Robert Spencer, who has also been banned from entering the UK, had been due to attend and speak at a rally in Woolwich organized by the English Defense League, the far-right movement which purports to share with Geller a mutual concern over the Islamisation of Europe, on Saturday, June 29. “Today is a sad day for freedom of speech,” EDL leader Tommy Robinson stated after Geller announced her ban.

It was in Woolwich that on May 22, the soldier Lee Rigby was murdered by two assailants armed with knives and a meat cleaver. One of the suspects, Michael Adebolajo, justified the action by stating that, “The only reason we have killed this man today is because Muslims are dying daily by British soldiers.” Since the attack, several mosques and Islamic community centers across Britain have been desecrated with graffiti, including swastikas and the letters EDL and NF. On June 23, a small explosive device was left outside a mosque in Walsall, near Birmingham.

In a statement, a Home Office spokesman said: ‘We condemn all those whose behaviors and views run counter to our shared values and will not stand for extremism in any form.’

Under British legal provisions introduced in 2005 to combat terrorism and extremism, the Border Agency under the auspices of the Home Office has the power to either deport or deny entry to non-UK citizens who engage in “unacceptable behaviors.” This covers people who use the media or public speech to “foment, justify or glorify terrorist violence in furtherance of particular beliefs, seek to provoke others to terrorist acts, foment other serious criminal activity or seek to provoke others to serious criminal acts, or foster hatred which might lead to inter-community violence in the UK.”

On the basis of Geller’s work with SIOA, Jihad Watch, and Atlas Shrugs, as well as her previous public statements, the Home Secretary personally deemed that if she were to “espouse such views” in the UK, Geller “would be committing unacceptable behaviors and would therefore be behaving in a way that is not conducive to the public good.”

ISRAEL TO SHOW AMERICA WHAT FREEDOM REALLY IS

English – “Today Everybody Knows: Rabbi Kahane was Right
*
However, thankfully, the United States, Canada, the European Union and even Israel itself have Kahane’s Kach Party and the Kahane Chai Party on their Terrorist Lists.
*
Apparently this means nothing to Israel’s Knesset Speaker. He seems to have gotten his feathers ruffled when one of Kahane’s followers, who happens to be a member of the Israeli government was denied an entry visa to attend a conference in the United States.
*
The feeble reaction of the Speaker is an indication of the contempt Israel has for the rest of the world with their “We’ll Show You” attitude …..
*
In reality, a big favour is being done to support the BDS Movement by him banning a delegation of MKs from attending a women’s conference in Washington this month because the United States has denied entry to MK Michael Ben Ari (National Union). So, thank you Mr. Speaker 😉

Israeli delegation cannot travel to U.S after MK Ben Ari denied entry visa

Knesset speaker banned MK delegation after National Union MK Ben Ari’s application was denied based on State Department’s prerogative to ban terrorists from U.S.

Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin announced Monday he is banning a delegation of MKs from attending a women’s conference in Washington this month because the United States has denied entry to MK Michael Ben Ari (National Union)

MKs Zahava Gal-On (Meretz), Tzipi Hotovely (Likud) and Einat Wilf (Atzmaut) were scheduled to take part in a four-day conference on women that begins March 25 and will be hosted by the U.S. Congress.

They were due to sit on a panel with U.S. congresswomen and to launch a collaborative project between the Knesset and Congress. Gal-On, Hotovely and Wilf were also scheduled to attend a reception at the Israeli Embassy in Washington.

The U.S. refusal to grant entry to Ben Ari because of what it said are his ties to a terrorist  group amounts to “an assault on the Knesset as a whole,” Rivlin said Monday. “The United  States’ allegation that an MK is a terrorist is unacceptable.”

Ben Ari is a long-time follower of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, whose Kach party is outlawed in Israel and is considered a terrorist organization in the United States.

The National Union MK applied for an entry visa to the United States last month so he could participate in two conferences, one of which is aimed at promoting immigration to Israel.

The U.S. consular staff said Ben Ari’s application was denied based on the State Department’s prerogative to ban terrorists from entering the country.
