LATUFF MAKES ISRAELI HEADLINES

Even when it comes to cartoons, Israel hates criticism.

Following arrival of an Israeli delegation in Brazil to assist search and rescue efforts in the wake of the dam collapse in the country, Carlos Latuff publishes a cartoon showing IDF soldiers with blood on their hands; Israeli comic book artist Uri Fink retaliates with his own cartoon.

Brazilian cartoon slams IDF soldiers helping with dam collapse

Itamar Eichner

Brazilian cartoon artist Carlos Latuff welcomed an Israeli military delegation, which was sent to assist local search and rescue teams to look for hundreds of missing people following a dam collapse in the country, with an anti-Semitic caricature portraying IDF soldiers as murderers with blood on their hands.

The Israeli delegation, which brought with it special equipment to allow them to operate in the muddy conditions, comprised of over 100 Israeli soldiers from the Home Front Command, includes engineers, doctors, and search and rescue personnel. Israel was the only country that sent a search and rescue team.

Latuff, known for his anti-Israeli views, is a political caricaturist whose work is published worldwide. One of his past works compared Israel with Nazi Germany.

Latuff’s latest cartoon shows IDF soldiers getting off a plane with their hands covered in blood as Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro greets them. The soldiers tell Bolsonaro: “Sorry for our delay! We’re busy killing Palestinians.”

In response, Israeli comic book artist Uri Fink blasted the Brazilian cartoonist on Facebook, saying that “Carlos Latuff is a disgrace to our profession.”

“It is acceptable to criticize a nation’s policies, even harshly, but when it sends people to help save lives in your country, the least you could do is shut the f*** up! Obviously, he is so completely consumed by hatred that he forgot his responsibility as a cartoonist and continues his duties as a propaganda tool in the finest totalitarian tradition,” Fink wrote.

Fink, a member of the Israeli Cartoon Project—an organization that is waging an online battle against anti-Israeli and Anti-Semitic cartoons—retaliated to Latuff’s cartoon with a caricature of the Brazilian artist holding a BDS sign while preventing an IDF soldier from saving a little girl.

Fink’s comeback

“His hatred for Israel has made Latuff lose his mind. The fact help is being prevented from people (in need) only because of the hatred toward Israel is an example of the lows one can reach when choosing to disproportionately attack Israel.

“The online smear campaign against Israel does nothing but poison the discourse and distance peace,” Fink said.

Trump channels Netanyahu at the U.N., as his top policy-makers meet with Iran-war-mongers

As you surely know, Donald Trump channeled Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday in his speech to the United Nations General Assembly. He mentioned Iran 14 times (compared to 0 for Russia and 4 for Israel) and all but called for regime change. Iran’s “brutal regime” was financing the destruction of Syria, its leaders “sow chaos, death and destruction,” its “corrupt dictatorship” should be isolated by the world.

This sly appeal was right out of the Netanyahu script:

[W]e ask all nations to support Iran’s people as they struggle to reclaim their religious and righteous destiny.

The media made a lot of Trump’s sovereignty doctrine–  nationalism and “patriotism” over “globalism” and multilateralism–  but even those remarks had a pro-Israel cast. Trump was talking about the US rejection of two Israel-bugaboos, the UN Human Rights Council and International Criminal Court.

As far as America is concerned, the ICC has no jurisdiction, no legitimacy, and no authority…. We will never surrender America’s sovereignty to an unelected, unaccountable, global bureaucracy….America is governed by Americans. We reject the ideology of globalism, and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism…

There is an obvious reason Trump is parroting Netanyahu. Sheldon Adelson and his wife Miriam are the largest funders of Republicans, ponying up $55 million for the midterm elections. Trump needs Sheldon Adelson now more than ever, and Adelson has a simple agenda, Israel. Adelson backs Netanyahu, pushed the move of the US embassy to Jerusalem, opposes negotiations with Palestinians, and called on President Obama to nuke Iran. Adelson wanted Trump to tear up the Iran deal, and he did.

The New York Times ran a good piece on Adelson’s influence last week, saying Sheldon and wife Miriam “have emerged as the biggest and potentially most influential contributors to Republicans in the midterm season,” and that the Adelsons have gotten “their most cherished priorities” from the “unflinchingly pro-Israel” Trump administration. The Times even ran a letter saying the Adelsons bought the presidency.

But it is disappointing that no one in the mainstream press is connecting the Trump administration’s theatrical anti-Iran push in New York yesterday with the rightwing Israel lobby, which seeks a war with Iran.

The agenda is clear. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton, addressed an Adelson shop, the organization United Against Nuclear Iran, in NY yesterday, and it was a war party at the Westin Grand Central Hotel. Bolton issued a bellicose warning to Iran to great applause: “If you cross us, our allies, or our partners; if you harm our citizens; if you continue to lie, cheat and deceive, yes, there will indeed be hell to pay.” As Eli Clifton and Derek Davison reported ahead of time:

According to the organization’s guest list, in attendance will be virtually every prominent official both in the United States and overseas who has pushed for a military confrontation with Iran—a veritable who’s who of warmongers…

Those guests included leading officials from countries that want a war with Iran: Yossi Cohen, director of the Israeli Mossad; ambassadors from Bahrain and the UAE; and the foreign minister of Saudi Arabia. Not to mention American hawks Dennis Ross and Joe Lieberman (the UANI chair), and a French one, Bernard Henri-Levy.

Bolton and Pompeo address warmongers at the Westin Grand Central Hotel, UANI conference.

Like Trump and the Republicans, UANI has been funded by Adelson. “Sheldon and Miriam Adelson… contributed $500,000 in 2013,” Clifton reports–  the same year Adelson called on Obama to nuke Iran.

UANI’s biggest funder is Thomas Kaplan, a billionaire investor who supports liberal and Jewish causes, such as wildlife conservation and the 92d Street Y. Five years ago, Kaplan introduced Benjamin Netanyahu at the 92d Street Y in fulsome terms –hailing the prime minister as the leader of “our people.”

It is… with great humility that we welcome the prime minister of Israel. On his shoulders rests the heavy decisions of  not only making a just peace, but confronting a fanatical regime that threatens his people, our people. We are inspired by your leadership, sustained by your faith, and truly honored by your presence.

UANI is closely aligned with Israel. Its board includes Tamir Pardo, a former Mossad director, and Irwin Cotler, the Canadian parliamentarian who is obsessed with BDS. Its contracts include $700,000 to Israeli consulting groups.

And you wonder why the media can’t touch the Israel lobby story; they’d have to talk about national interest, dual loyalty, whatever you want to call it. Sheldon Adelson once said he wished he’d served in the Israeli army, not the American one. Or as Obama said when he was trying to get the Iran deal through, only one country in the world was against it, Israel, and he’d be abrogating his constitutional duty if he didn’t work for the deal.

I recognize that Prime Minister Netanyahu disagrees — disagrees strongly… I believe he is wrong.  I believe the facts support this deal.  I believe they are in America’s interest and Israel’s interest.  And as President of the United States, it would be an abrogation of my constitutional duty to act against my best judgment simply because it causes temporary friction with a dear friend and ally.  I do not believe that would be the right thing to do for the United States.  I do not believe it would be the right thing to do for Israel.

Obama said the only alternative to the deal was war.

And Trump owes war-mongering Adelson everything; and he tore up the Iran deal. And the media “has largely supported Trump’s fictitious view” of the deal.

That’s the real issue here. Trump has surrounded himself with warmongers. Though yesterday he tweeted that he is sure that Iranian president Hasan Rouhani is an “absolutely lovely man,” his militant speech at the U.N. was scripted; and the script is what we all have to worry about. Once again neoconservatives are scheming for the invasion of a sovereign country in the Middle East, and it would be helpful if the press described the agenda.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Cartoonist Fired as Paper Shifts Right

By Kim Lyons

Rob Rogers joined The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as a staff editorial cartoonist in 1993 and for years his cartoons have appeared in the newspaper roughly five days a week. But in late May, around Memorial Day, he said, they began disappearing.

In just over a week, Mr. Rogers said, six of them were killed, one after it had been placed on a page. The first of the killed cartoons, which Mr. Rogers posted to social media and on his website, depicted President Trump placing a wreath on a tombstone that read “Truth, Honor, Rule of Law.”

Over the past three months, Mr. Rogers said, 19 cartoons or proposals for cartoons were rejected by either the editorial page editor, Keith Burris, or the publisher, John Robinson Block.

Mr. Rogers did not receive an official explanation for why the cartoons were killed, he says, but he was presented with a set of guidelines that included setting certain conditions on his work and an approval process for his cartoons.

“I felt they were going to be able to restrict my ability to do my job,” said Mr. Rogers, who declined to give specifics about the guidelines.

“I think they were definitely trying to send me a message,” he added. “It felt like they were pushing me out.”

On Thursday, his suspicions were confirmed when he was fired during an off-site meeting with two Post-Gazette human resources representatives.

“They said, ‘This is your last day,’” he said. “It was like those movies you see on TV where the cop has to hand in his badge and his gun, only I was afraid they were going to ask for my pen.”

Mr. Burris said The Post-Gazette offered to allow Mr. Rogers to continue working as an independent contractor, but Mr. Rogers declined.

The firing is the latest controversy involving the newspaper’s editorial pages. In January, The Post-Gazette and its sister paper, The Toledo Blade, published an editorial titled “Reason as Racism” that defended President Trump’s stance on immigration despite his profane description of countries like Haiti or those in Africa when discussing the issue. Mr. Burris, then the editorial page editor of The Blade, was the author of the editorial, which drew condemnation from the Post-Gazette newsroom, some members of the Block family and from outside critics.

Mr. Rogers is unabashedly liberal and many of his cartoons, including several the paper refused to publish, were critical of President Trump.CreditRoss Mantle for The New York Times

In March, the papers’ owner, Block Communications, merged the editorial pages of the two publications, appointing Mr. Burris as editor, vice president and editorial director. He has since written several editorials praising the president, part of a rightward shift by the once-liberal editorial page.

Mr. Burris said Friday that while he may be more to the right than Mr. Rogers, his goal is to make sure The Post-Gazette is “independent and thoughtful” in its approach, without any ideological intent.

“I’m certainly not in Trump’s base and I don’t think our publisher is, we just don’t think he’s Satan,” Mr. Burris said. “We never said ‘don’t do Trump cartoons.’ A Trump cartoon every day is not interesting, and a Trump cartoon every day that’s not funny and is just enraged is not particularly effective.”

Mr. Burris added that his role in some of the changes to the editorial page has been overstated. “This sort of portrayal of me as a right-wing yahoo riding in on a steed from Ohio with a red cap on is just silly and it’s belied by — well, just read my stuff.”

But on the Post-Gazette’s Friday editorial page, a statement attributed to the editorial board professed “gratitude and affection” for Mr. Rogers. “There has never been any intention to silence or suppress Mr. Rogers. Nor would we ever ask him to violate the dictates of his conscience. Rather, we have sought to engage in the necessary journalistic practices of editing, gatekeeping and collaboration.”

Mr. Rogers, whose cartoons are unabashedly liberal, said he was uneasy about his future at the paper from the time Mr. Burris was brought on board. “They clearly had a mission to change the editorial page and I wasn’t getting in line so they decided it was time to change the cartoon as well,” he said.

Mr. Burris said he did not enter into his working relationship with Mr. Rogers with any expectations.

“I don’t think it was doomed from the start,” Mr. Burris said. “But it’s like when a marriage is in trouble and you go to mediation or a counselor, you both have to really buy into it. Sometimes one party just can’t help it; they’re just too angry to buy into it.”

A 1999 Pulitzer Prize finalist, Mr. Rogers has won numerous awards for his work, which is syndicated by Universal Press Syndicate.

“The firing of Rogers and the absence of his cartoons from the editorial pages is a blow to free expression and to the existence of a free and open marketplace of ideas,” Pat Bagley, president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, said in a statement.

Mr. Rogers said his work would continue to appear in syndication and on social media. He also has plans for other projects.

“I can’t imagine during the next few years of the Trump presidency that I won’t be at my drawing table most days,” he said.

Argentina cancels football friendly with Israel in Jerusalem

The match was expected to be played at the Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem which was once home to a Palestinian village.

Argentina‘s national football team has cancelled an upcoming friendly match with Israel, Argentine news sources reported.

Argentinian sports website Minutouno reported on Tuesday that Saturday’s game in Jerusalem had been “suspended” amid an “escalation of violence, threats and criticism” directed at captain ‘Leo’ Messi.

Argentina, a major contender to win the World Cupthis summer, has made four previous pre-World Cup visits to Israel since 1986.

The fixture between the two teams was set to be played in Jerusalem’s Teddy Stadium on June 9, which is built on land that was once a Palestinian village that was destroyed in 1948.

Israeli media reported that in light of this latest development, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will speak to his Argentinian counterpart Mauricio Macri by telephone.

The ambassador of Palestine in Argentina, Husni Abdel Wahed, had expressed his opposition to the friendly.

“This match would be similar to us celebrating … the occupation of Malvinas,” he told Radio Cooperativa on Tuesday, referring to the Falkland Islands.

Abdel Wahed went on to say that the match was part of the celebrations of Israel’s 70th anniversary since its establishment in 1948, after hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forcibly displaced from their villages and lands by Zionist paramilitaries.

“For us, it is unacceptable to hold this game in Jerusalem because it is occupied territory, and it is painful to see that the team, which has the love and support of so many Palestinians and Arab citizens, support the violation of international law,” he said.

‘Nothing friendly about military occupation ‘

Last month, the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement launched a campaign urging Argentina to pull out of the fixture.

“There is nothing ‘friendly’ about military occupation and apartheid,” the movement said, which calls for an end to the occupation of Palestine, the right of return for Palestinian refugees, and equal rights for Palestinians citizens of Israel.

“Don’t play Israel until Palestinians’ human rights are respected.”

BDS criticised the fixture as “political”, and accused Israeli officials of using it to cover up attacks on Palestinians “on and off the field”.

As part of the campaign, Mohammed Khalil, a Palestinian footballer, directed a message towards Argentina’s beloved forward Lionel Messi.

“I call on the Argentinian team and especially captain Lionel Messi – because he is very popular in Palestine, particularly in the Gaza Strip – to stand in solidarity with Palestinians and to boycott the scheduled game with Israel, which is occupying our land,” Khalil said.

Khalil was shot by Israeli snipers on March 30, during the first Friday protests of Palestinians demonstrating east of Gaza, demanding their right to return.

He was shot in both of his legs, and one of his kneecaps had to be removed, putting an end to his footballing career.

Earlier this week, the head of the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) Jibril Rajoub slammed the friendly as being opposite “a game of peace”.

“The Israeli government is trying to give it political significance by insisting it be held in Jerusalem,” Rajoub said.

Another horrific example of the Israeli military using excessive force. A violation of international standards, committing what appear to be willful killings constituting war crimes.

Today is the 70th anniversary of Yawm an-Nakba or Nakba Day. On this day Palestinians mark the anniversary of the Nakba (“Catastrophe”) when they were violently forced from their land and homes as Israel was created in 1948.

More than 750,000 indigenous Palestinians were violently driven from their land and homes. As thousands of their fellow country people were slaughtered around them, they fled in terror to neighboring countries and to the West Bank and Gaza. To this day, Israel refuses to allow them to return to the land they were forced from – despite international law giving them that right to return.

But the Nakba didn’t end in 1948. It has continued for 70 years, as Israel continues to steal and occupy Palestinian land and oppress the indigenous Palestinian population.
